NEW FRAUD CHARGES: $90 million stolen from Medicaid programs: DOJ

[00:00:02]I'm Christine from CNN Washington with a look at new fraud charges on a massive scale. The Justice Department announced $90 million in taxpayer money was stolen from multiple Medicaid programs, all in a state becoming known for widespread fraud, Minnesota.

[00:00:19]In Minnesota, fraud frustration has been front and center for years. The latest chapter, a crackdown at child care and autism centers accused of using millions in taxpayer money to operate but not actually operating.

[00:00:37]And the child care center is locked.

[00:00:39]>> exposed in December by a conservative social media influencer. Now, new charges just announced involving 90 million in Medicaid fraud in the state.

[00:00:48]>> Today's arrests represent the largest autism fraud bust in American history.

[00:00:53]15 people indicted for stealing taxpayer money from autism health care as well as housing and home support programs. Our cases today involve seven different state-managed Medicaid programs that have been systematically pilfered by fraudsters who treated Minnesota-run programs as their personal piggy bank.

[00:01:17]The state is also home to the largest pandemic fraud case in the country.

[00:01:21]Arrests were made this morning.

[00:01:23]>> This 2022 announcement by the Justice Department revealing 47 people had been charged in a $250 million fraud scheme for an organization supposed to be helping those in need, Feeding Our Future. Now, the ringleader, Amy Bock, has been sentenced to 500 months or 41 years, also ordered to pay more than $242 million in restitution. The judge found what we all knew, which was that Feeding Our Future was entirely fraudulent. All the sites under its sponsorship were fraudulent. Um and she carried out the scheme um every step of the way. Most others charged are Somali American, including a woman whose daycare center was featured in the now viral video. The owner also charged in the Feeding Our Future scheme. Federal officials made clear they are just getting started, planning to expand their investigative team both for Minnesota and the rest of the country in what is becoming a fraud crackdown.
