This diagnostic breakdown masterfully exposes how the complexity of chiplet architecture can bypass traditional stress tests, leaving users with phantom failures. It is a sobering reminder that as hardware becomes more modular, the points of failure become increasingly elusive.

What A Dying AMD Chiplet Core Looks Like.追加:
Hey, what's going on everybody? I hope you guys are having a fantastic day.
So, what we got here, [sighs] it's a pretty really pretty ASRock 7800XT graphics card with uh customer said that he's uh he sent me a couple of photos with some artifacts on the screen and what not and um just wanted to show you guys uh what happens when you let these things sag. So, let's see if we can get a straight edge here somewhere. Give me a second here.
There, I think that is a good representation. So, you can see how uh bent this uh PCB is right there.
So, yeah.
You see that?
This is uh Oh, man. Uh Right? Can you guys see that? Yeah, I think so. I think it's coming in through the camera. Good. Yeah, so that's how saggy this thing is.
And um the sag is actually in this area here.
Or the the twist, right?
So, that uh in time you can have this card uh without support for I don't know, maybe a couple of years or maybe a year and a half or you know, something like that. But eventually it will uh fail on you because of this here. So, it's typically those memory chips and it could also be the core. It could also be the core that has um ripped pads or cracked solder joints.
So, uh let's go ahead and uh install this in the system.
Uh run memtune and see uh what we find.
Okay, and fun stuff. It doesn't look like it's a memory related issue.
Um but I am going to warm up the card just to see if um some you know if something pops up uh and we can take care of that.
Okay, so now we're running off the um the card, booting off the card. So.
All right, so the driver loaded successfully. 7800XT.
All right, but uh let's go ahead and put some load on it.
See what happens. Got our sensors, everything loaded. Um but I'm sure that this is where this is going to crash.
When it starts to get hot.
Um temperature temperatures looking okay. Nothing too suspicious there.
Uh delta of course is horrible in this card, so that is expected.
But fine so far.
Uh let me run a little bit uh more time. Give it a little more time and I'll be back with you guys.
All right, fellas. So, this has this has been running over 5 minutes now.
Um hasn't crashed or given me any artifacts.
Huh.
But this is not this is just uh for testing uh you know, power delivery basically really and temps. Uh it doesn't really test the architecture of the core and that's where the devil you know, like they say, the devil's in the details. So, let's go ahead and run a game engine and see what happens.
All right, so we'll run uh still Nomad.
And hopefully uh we get a pass here.
But this should artifact if there is something actually wrong with the card.
We need to reball it or you know, there's cracked solder joints or ripped pads or something like that, anything to do with the core. Um and memory also, yeah. So, this uh should give us if there's something wrong with this card it should it should not pass this test here. Typically 90% of the times it doesn't. So, we'll just see what happens.
All right, fellas. So, we got a 99.3% pass.
What is going on with this card, man?
Hm.
I did notice one thing though. Uh let me check here.
Hotspot.
Uh the hotspot's pretty toasty. We're at 97.
It was hovering between uh 96 97 the whole time. So, >> [sighs and gasps] >> you know what? Let's try Superposition.
Maybe we get lucky there.
Good, fellas. So, we're coming to the end of this test here.
And nothing.
Nothing.
Um I am kind of speechless here.
But uh you know what we're going to do?
We're going to take it apart anyway.
Um give it some new thermal paste because that hotspot is horrendous.
And what I think is actually going on here because I'm running from the display port, not the HDMI. The HDMI port it's uh here.
Up over the display port. So, HDMI, display port, display port, display port and so on. So, I think the HDMI port might be the culprit here. Might be dirty, you know. Or might be or maybe it needs to be replaced. I don't know. So, let's take this thing apart and see what we can find. And okay, it looks like nobody's been in this card.
So, that's always a good thing. Let's go ahead and take it apart real quick.
And um see if we find something suspicious.
Um I have had I have had cards come in like this. Um Customer, you know, sends me the proof pictures which I don't doubt.
Um you know, but then once once I start to test them myself, nothing.
Um uh there's no, you know, no sign of a of any issues with the card itself, uh memory or core related. Um a lot of a lot of times of course it's going to be memory and core. Sometimes is a simple thing as a HDMI port that is dirty or is uh gone bad. And by the look of the I'll put I'll put up a post a picture uh on the screen so you guys can see what I'm seeing.
Um Yeah, so and based on that on that photo um that does not look like it's anything to do with memory.
Um could be the core.
Um but it could also be a bad HDMI port.
And most people use HDMI instead of display port, so it's kind of yeah.
A bit difficult sometimes to diagnose these things.
Come on. Let's go.
There we go.
Now, is there anything here at the front that we need to remove? Nope.
Nope. Okay, that's good.
Oh.
We got to take these off.
That's a new one.
And it's going to be a torques.
Wow, okay.
Trying to be like ASUS.
Come on now, ASRock. Yeah, so what we're going to be doing is just uh we're going to be taking a look at the board, um the condition of the board itself.
Um because there might be some corrosion somewhere.
Um so let me let me do that real quick.
I hate these connectors.
Okay.
So, that's for that there. Now, let's take off this back plate.
Uh but yeah, I would hate to do any work on this card that um that did not need to be done to begin with, you know, and charge you for work that did not need to be done.
Um I don't like doing that unless I am 100% sure that that you know, that is the problem and that's what needs to be fixed. And yeah, based on the sag, I mean, I would expect there to be memory issues here, but no. No memories no memory issue here.
Uh as far as I can tell so far. Yeah, I don't think I'm going to be removing that this one need. Um but yeah, the display port is one thing that I am concerned with.
But uh yeah, there's no corrosion anywhere here.
No corrosion anywhere.
It's It's bit dusty.
But that's about it.
Um Let's go under the microscope and uh take a closer look. Maybe there's a resistor or something that is uh knocked off.
Um Stuff happens, so.
Let's find out. Okay.
Let's take a closer look here.
>> [sighs] >> Let's see what we find.
Let's see here.
No, it's nothing.
And I don't I'm not seeing anything so far, and I don't think I will.
Um but you never know.
You just never know.
And no one's been inside this card um before me, so I am happy about that.
>> [snorts] >> And okay, let's see.
Nothing here.
NPS faces as always.
No, but um Yep.
Nothing obvious.
Let's look at the uh the back of the card here real quick.
See [snorts] if any of the uh little caps here are knocked off or anything like that.
Nope. Nothing there.
Nope.
Nope.
Okay. Well, um See here.
Everything's looking good. I don't see any uh So, we've got the memory chips uh the rear of the memory chips.
These are the ones close to the PCI slot.
And there's no caps or nothing obviously missing or knocked off or anything like that.
Um Hm.
It does have a dual BIOS, but um yeah, that I don't think that that means anything here.
Um I really don't know what to say about this one here.
But let's go ahead and replace our thermal paste uh just in case it is um you know, maybe uh I don't know, by some weird reason the hotspot is causing those uh uh what you're seeing there on the screen.
I don't think that that's really uh the case, but you never know.
We're going to be using Duronot.
Because why not?
I got it, and I want to get rid of it.
I'm going I don't want to don't like sitting on thermal pastes.
So, yeah.
For too long, I mean, you know.
If I have it there, I want to make use of it.
>> [snorts] >> Okay.
Yeah, my cat's clawing up at my legs right now because he wants attention.
>> [snorts] >> Actually, he's not even my cat.
>> [laughter] >> Uh This guy is uh the neighbor's cat.
The neighbor that lives like two or three apartments down from where I live.
But um I don't know what's going on over there with when when this guy came over here uh looking through my window.
He uh He did not look very well. He looked emaciated?
I think is the word, yeah.
Uh like uh really skinny, and yeah, he did not look healthy at all.
So, I decided I was going to uh take care of him.
You know, or try to at least, you know.
But uh So, so I put some food outside for the cat.
But she came and uh she was not happy.
She complained about uh me feeding her cat and so on and whatnot, so I stopped putting food out there, and the cat just came inside.
So, the food is actually in here.
>> [laughter] >> Um But uh yeah, I you know, it's you can tell there's something off in with her, you know.
So.
Yeah. I don't think you should treat your animals like that.
It's almost just skin and bones.
Not cool. All right.
Let uh let's go ahead and put the back plate back on here.
And uh again, I just cannot find anything with this card. Um I don't know what else to say.
So.
We're going to put it back together.
Um and I'm pretty sure that um the hotspot issue is gone.
Um I'm pretty sure that the hotspot issue is going to be gone now.
>> [snorts] >> We got some fresh paste on here.
And Duronot is uh not not bad quality at all.
I mean, is it um expensive? Yeah, I think it's expensive.
Um Can you get something better for the same money?
Uh yeah.
Yeah, I think uh MX-7 would be my choice if I had to pick, but but that's not saying that Duronot is bad quality at all.
Um I have tested it. It does perform rather well. So.
>> [snorts] >> But it is yeah, it is expensive. It's not cheap. But then again, you know, best things in life are not cheap.
>> [sighs] >> So.
But uh okay.
Let's put this uh puppy back together.
And we're not going to replace the thermal pads because that's not the intent here.
Okay. There we go.
And the thermal pads do not look bad whatsoever, so no reason to replace them and have to charge for that.
So, yeah.
But I think this will be a um I don't know. You know what? Uh there is a thing There is one thing one last thing that I can do.
And it's a folding at home.
Uh I have noticed that um even though sometimes cards graphics cards like like this one here pass uh tests like, you know, graphics tests um power stage like uh you know, tests like uh the furry donut.
Um I have noticed that if you put if you put a a load of for example AI or some type of uh like uh some type of workload like folding at home the cracks start to show. The the uh the system >> [snorts] >> um like the the the workloads that come in they keep crashing and a new one comes in again, crashes, a new one comes in again. It keeps crashing and crashing and crashing over and over and that tells me that the yeah, the the core is uh >> [snorts] >> not liking it.
Typically it's the core. Um sometimes it's a bad driver MOSFET that is starting to poke its head out.
But um most of the time turns out to be just uh a quick reball that needs to be done.
And yeah, that typically fixes the issue.
Now, I don't know what I'm going to tell this customer because I mean, I have the you know he's shown me the proof that indeed there is something going on.
Um so, what I'm going to do is I'm going to I'm going to test I'm going to try instead of having the um instead of going off the the display port I'm going to go off the uh the HDMI port, okay?
So, maybe there's something there and uh but but before we do that I'm going to clean it really fast.
Um just to be sure.
Uh yeah, let's plug these in.
All right, so that that looks good to me there.
Yeah.
Okay. All right, fellas. Let's go and uh clean this HDMI port real quick.
Okay, so we're running Time Spy and um everything's looking good. I mean what in the world is this?
And we're running uh HDMI by the way.
From the HDMI port. I cleaned it up, so hopefully that I don't know, that did something, you know?
Yeah, the graphics test passed just fine, so I don't know, guys. I don't know what else I can do for this. I am going to leave it running um overnight doing folding at home.
Uh maybe we can uh I don't know, something will come out of that.
But uh yeah, I think that'll be it for today, guys.
It's uh a repair that um that looks like does not need to be done. So but um I will update you tomorrow >> [snorts] >> if something does come up because it'll be running overnight.
Let's see what the score is.
Oh, great.
Fantastic.
Right on.
All right, so I guess I'll see you guys tomorrow.
I don't know. I don't know what to do.
No crashing, no artifacts, no nothing.
This is a mystery card to me, seriously.
But I do have a theory. I do have a theory.
Uh because I've also seen this in dying AMD cards, AMD uh chiplet designs.
Where you get those memory errors uh or core artifacts, you know?
Uh when the chiplet when the cores is starting to die. Uh and it happens randomly. Could happen at any time, you know, it doesn't have like a like this triggers it or you know, like a pattern. It doesn't you know, it just happens randomly whenever and according to the customer that's exactly what he has been experiencing.
It could happen right away or it could happen like hours after playing video games according to him. Um it just happens randomly, so this could be a chiplet design again dying.
Um because I just have no explanation for this. I am clueless. Um I could reball the core, but for what?
There's no symptoms of a you know, it needing to be reballed.
And actually that could that could actually speed up or expedite the process of the core dying because of the the the heat. Uh it's just oh man, it's just AMD, I don't know.
Uh I don't know what to say.
>> [laughter] >> I don't know what to say.
Uh and I I don't want to sound like I'm making up excuses. I just really uh I I know that the PCB is is bowed also, so you know.
But it's not you know, I'm heating up the core as much as possible, loading it up and still nothing.
Nothing. That usually once the core starts to heat up, metal begins to expand you know, that's when the the weaknesses start to show, crashing, artifacts, you know, all that stuff. This thing, nothing.
So, I believe the customer. I believe him 100%. I think that uh what he had what he's experiencing is real and it is something that is happening and uh unfortunately um it's it's probably probably the core starting to die, you know, because he says it happens randomly.
So uh another chiplet design and unfortunately I ran out of all of my good cores for seven for the 7800 cards. I had four of them with good working cores and they're all gone. Uh actually my last one is this one here. Um this is my last uh the last card that has a working 7800 core in it.
Um yeah, so there's nothing else I can do.
>> [sighs] >> Fuck you, AMD. Seriously.
I'll see you guys on the next one. Take care. Bye-bye.
