[00:00:01]Hello, I'm in Brussels and I found this really cool statue of Gerard Mercator who lived from 1512 to 1594.

[00:00:10]He studied math and astronomy at the University of Leuven under Gemma Frisius, one of the leading mathematicians and instrument makers of his time.

[00:00:21]Mercator used those skills to make globes, maps, and scientific instruments.

[00:00:27]He's most famous for the Mercator projection, which is a way of drawing the globe on a flat map.

[00:00:34]The amazing thing about this projection is that it preserves angles.

[00:00:40]So, on a Mercator map, a route that keeps the same compass direction, like always sailing northeast, appears as a straight line, which made the map extremely useful for navigation.

[00:00:54]The sculptor of this statue is Louis Pierre Van Biesbroeck.
