Gerard Mercator (1512-1594), a mathematician and astronomer who studied at the University of Leuven under Gemma Frisius, developed the Mercator projection—a cylindrical map projection that preserves angles, making routes with constant compass directions appear as straight lines, which revolutionized maritime navigation.

The Mathematician Behind the Mercator Projection - Gerard MercatorHinzugefügt:
Hello, I'm in Brussels and I found this really cool statue of Gerard Mercator who lived from 1512 to 1594.
He studied math and astronomy at the University of Leuven under Gemma Frisius, one of the leading mathematicians and instrument makers of his time.
Mercator used those skills to make globes, maps, and scientific instruments.
He's most famous for the Mercator projection, which is a way of drawing the globe on a flat map.
The amazing thing about this projection is that it preserves angles.
So, on a Mercator map, a route that keeps the same compass direction, like always sailing northeast, appears as a straight line, which made the map extremely useful for navigation.
The sculptor of this statue is Louis Pierre Van Biesbroeck.
I thought this was a really cool math history stop in Brussels, so I wanted to share it.
Check it out if you're ever here.
