Man on the Street | World Environment Day 2026 Advocacy | Episode 1Added:
[music] [music] [music] >> Hey, hello. Welcome back to another episode on Solomon's Best. And nice to have you company with you. Well, the last episode we were celebrating International Biodiversity Day. And we were going to street to you asking the people about what their thoughts about biodiversity and you know, everything else was very interesting.
This week, June number 5th, that's a Friday, we were celebrating International World Environment Day. So, Solomon's Best and Gola Street Mua and finding out what people think about their thoughts about what is environment, how you may survey look after environment, especially with the theme of this year, a call for global change or global Yeah, global change on climate change. One of the very important topic, everyone. So, join me, your man on the street, and let me find out what people think about a call for global change on climate change and environment. Yes, that's right. I'm doing it again for the Ministry of Environment together with them Climate Change Conservation Meteorology, you know, all stuff like that, disaster. Well, and this one is all about environment, yeah, bro. Name blue.
>> Uh, David, Alister, Costello.
>> Thank you, David. Um, you want me to tell them that you make a World International Environment Day celebration of Solomon Islands? So, you've been joining or you you heard anything about the Solomon?
>> me here.
Uh, little Solomon and happy.
Thank you Dave. You should be Tell him come what no no thinking believe you think environment.
>> What my environment?
>> Environment of things where I stay around him you may know more less you see and all of the animals and all of the food where me know more and some swimming keep him good things here by him helping you me and then help him to uh environment let's say low climate to keeping you me kind things like sea level rise this time and all of that pollution of things like making no more water and things low drain or you may careless no more about him killing all the mangroves and >> Yeah.
>> Uh and stuff like logging and mining things here. So so why you think environment and important you may and how you may save a minute here.
Yeah, environment is very important to me because you may stuck me rely no more low sea and stuck me rely low land too.
So if you may destroy more of that low sea and let's say fish and uh all of the coral reefs blame me because it's a poisoning more of the reef and also like a fish now yeah.
>> Yeah, man.
>> So you may have to preserve him no you may not throw him all the rubbish all about you may know uh ask him too much of the industrial country come do him all of that factories like too much movement of oil and uh you must stop it to work and work and burn all of the islands blame me everyone cause by spoiling the reefs and side of the land and cause I've seen them all of that >> Mhm.
>> Uh if you may careless low cutting more trees and by him causing more soil erosion and by the ground time logging by him spoiling them too rivers taking all of that ground out pollution and here.
And by him we let's say uh environment no good now.
>> No good now. Okay.
>> Let me this year World Environment Day team let me call for global change law.
Climate change, yeah? Global change base climate change one of the big issue law environment living. You should be sharing how now climate change any affecting you me low Solomon Islands.
Climate change how now affecting you me low Solomon Islands.
>> Yeah, one thing we live at there but that's all over him no more.
Low this time low South Province so like that from making into the carbon trading.
>> Mhm.
>> And for stop him now logging then you make keeping more trees no more and you make a species where logging something easy.
Then by him no spoil him now because him release him air time him cut him trees him go out.
By him cause him now this one I see level for him rise and hot too much let's say by sun him hot too much.
>> Yes.
>> Then by killing now all the animals low.
You should be staying inside of the islands no more and all that. Yeah, corals and the reefs and all that mangrove, yeah.
And uh There are other thing more about the logging and the mining, yeah. Logging and mining, yeah. And to follow something where all this come no more all that come cut all that come digging all the ground blame me. Let's say low Isabel I think all the water carry them to ground with them all the mineral go.
And all them have low Isabel because all that carry them go overseas, too.
>> Yeah, I know.
>> So I think things also government should be looking at him. Give me some other things where we got better ways for taking selling for economy no more, yeah.
>> Yes.
>> And one thing we discuss to myself now carbon trading where we looking.
>> Mhm.
>> If we do him kind of the safe things where we help him environment then selling by come to help him you me. This money now driving too much stock.
>> Yes. Yes.
>> Things same.
>> I think give me experience in uh trees have been cut by you me some of them get them oxygen from all trees, yeah. Uh logging and something or something, yeah. it soil erosion and you may get him of the dirty water and yeah some of the effect of climate change and because of climate change where you mean I used to be a lot of that kind of climate now you know what I mean. Well, what are some of the things or activities you think some of the action where you may must take them especially individuals and communities organization institution maybe problems of government and national government for you may must address him not climate change because of things here and we come go go and we you may look at impact of climate and change that you may know.
>> Yes first one when we task will have no no you may say lever time you may put him over the members of the parliament you may say some of the what you might have wrong man or the goal then all those addressing now all the things to help him so that you may release people and go pass him as well as country now. So one thing you know my is that you may ask go and ask local people where the office was set up for helping you may know how we stand with the resources to blame you may not go too much put him all the kind of some logging and mining and him no more for helping country or helping you may say lever here.
So first of all people must learn for work together with them all the all the chief blame me and all the church leaders and then you may look for what environmental groups were set up local dream seek help local before you may go into doing things like harvesting our resources because time you may do logging by vice versa yeah but all the work all the come cut him trees really give him selling but in blood day yeah by me trouble or him then everything what the kind of him go so you may must try for avoid him now all the kind of decision making or something I think every society think blame for me handle him this one uh uh climate change and global change and so I am in position like how you make the camera development is a country in a month you miss call him you mean so you mean him good for him good information what now or the kind development is everything for affecting environment before you miss a making decision for a long kind development also is you tell him what do you put money to stand for people not just go for one and but you must save him how to save him environment to you man yes I have no more no political I think no more something always spoil him country no matter wrong people in me put him in a parliament then it comes to practice blame him being corrupt to me for sale game go cover him fall down and for what you may go faster you mean no matter that class or yeah so this one making follow my all the people of Solomon Island if you like climate blame him good what do you want the money to be provided for what the environment then for keeping safe and so what do you want to give me sugar and coffee things are we dying and no more drinking people Thank you so do you that's a classic story written David Sanem or to you I think it's a lot of climate change now >> [laughter] >> well thank you to Solomon Islands Maritime Authority a similar for sponsoring this trip talk with asking about environment we got someone here named Leo bro >> me Kevin >> Kevin nice to see you bro you heard about World Environment Day or you've been participating any celebrations in the Solomon Islands before >> I've heard about it and as far as my understanding nothing while this environment thing I'm going on I think a lot of people we have been participating in one way or another yeah I think >> Thanks Kev can you share your thoughts what is environment and why do you think environment is important and you may need for managing environment?
>> Right. Uh as far as me understanding, environment is uh the nature and whatever you may look in surrounding you may know more.
Especially uh where we live and enjoy lively me together as uh you may stop whatever you may stop.
>> I mean I'm important and why you may and you may need for managing too?
>> Uh yes, uh environment as far as me me understanding, I think I'm important that uh we need to look after and manage.
That's the way me better me look at them.
I advocate this uh we want to go around uh we want to talk about him or like you may need for look after him because I'm very important for uh livelihood for you me celebrate, our families, communities and uh you me as a nation here.
We think I'm very important and we need to manage it and look after it. That's the way me better me look at it uh time uh loggers go around and do him logging and all same here. Plan the what I educated people, they go around and tell us that oh you may must preserve him environment blame me look after him forest.
And uh our natural uh look look blow trees and surroundings blame me something like that. Yeah.
>> Mhm.
>> Well, this year world climate change uh day by him happen and him blow got a call for a global change to climate change. You should be sharing what now some blow uh climate change effect or climate change you may affect him you may know something like that. What now some blow >> Uh yes, yeah. Very important uh as far as me me looking uh from the last uh 45 to 50 years or so >> Mhm.
>> uh me looking my environment uh no surroundings blame me especially where me currently live this time me looking was him the current shoreline and me looking me I mean and me because no this uh sea level rise and uh if you talk about climate change those are the changes where me looking was him distance where me stand up where him no no location where me was stopping him me better uh some 100 to 150 m now >> Yep.
>> time you compare him you look all the way you you looking uh salt water where me him like already 100 to 150 m >> Mhm.
>> from where him used to be so I think the changes where me looking low environment blame me especially the shore lines low coastal areas yeah a big change low there so where we can at least see the changes him happen him no happen for nothing too a lot of things where causing disturbance >> Mhm.
>> all around the world him happen and then if you me take him low perspective low Bible low me say low me say yeah one mouth something was him happen but by him tell him low me changes where him happen and then and me fulfilling some of all our parts of what the Bible have been said about uh >> Mhm.
Mhm.
>> uh people lives and environment and so forth so I can see that uh a lot of changes here him go along with him if you like the biblical concept uh the way me looking things him happen so >> Yeah. Good give you think what now? Some of the things where activities where him me actually contribute towards this where climate change change impact low Solomon Islands. What now activities where me you talk about sea level rise uh soil erosion uh low beach side but last time 100 m low there coconut low there this time him low you know you think what now something like activities where him happen that that's why something was happening. A lot of uh activities where I'm happening. If I can I can say something about him and my involvement blow logging and other things. Big big factories doing what I'm going to say.
If if I can just mention that those are the things where I'm making a lot of changes here.
A lot of changes. Yes, where are we going?
Yeah, me meeting him or something like that.
And a lot of And then those are the things where I'm contributing to make him changes and causing disturbance where you may need to for help to manage him and then look after him.
Let's do me but due to this one of them me me nothing in my mind me something help unless you may make him some more control measures where I'm wanting but I think those are the the things where I'm going to mention here. Also, what do you think this one you do think what any small action where you may maybe government or institutions or provincial government or organizations can do in for addressing climate impact or something like that. Any small action you may have to do what do you think?
Well, I think those actions where you may have to do in local community level, local provincial government level and even the national level. And number four, at least advocate law law make him some more control and also in for for control him. So, what do you advocate giving awareness? Yeah, awareness letting people understand him what not those things where he may contribute law causing environment blaming for making a lot of changes or something so at least you may involve law whatever things where by me preserve him or help or no causing disturbance.
No to throw away many kind rubbish and any kind thing or something where you may have to normally do here.
Rubbish and contribute to make him place him look no good and then time one of them question uh those uh one of them before or affect him uh environment they mean ocean so.
But then should should uh uh this uh environment day coming up as you will uh mention him.
Then those are the time where you may educate him people blame me low.
You looking how best for him to have a contribute or some individuals uh communities and city or towns where you may stop them.
Or at least have him some good understanding as you may get him those information from the responsible people or authorities and then the government if you like, yeah.
So those are the things where we will find him need to learn.
A lot of people since you may know educate him whatever about how to do him something where we go go him you know even uh control him. So I think it's a good idea that uh responsible authority, government province go down to uh people's level or community levels and then try him as much as possible to educate him what low help uh prevent him and uh at least uh look out him environment blame me, yeah.
Thank you. Thank you, yeah.
>> Uh then let me write in.
>> Well then thank you for time with you.
You are aware that you may come World International uh Environment Day happen with Solomon Islands or you've been part of this celebrations before?
>> You know joining uh uh any celebration before.
>> So but me had in we got him uh World Environment Day and something around.
Can you share your thoughts about uh what now you think any environment and why environment have me important and I mean need to be managed well.
>> Uh environment around me uh as an um I'm very important we say that we must have a uh look after them.
Uh uh communities blame me and uh if you imagine if you imagine well, uh by my time uh maybe every people in Solomon Islands this planet every >> Yeah, so climate change environment what now you mean?
>> Mhm.
Uh Our forest blame me.
Uh marine resources blame me.
Yeah.
>> Uh what about those are the natural environment? What about social environment maybe for example?
>> Yes, yes, uh one fellow [laughter] uh uh Uh environment here. I mean a partner environment. Yeah, partner environment.
And uh maybe looking for them and uh spoiling environment limited.
You mean got a lot of vehicles uh also. Yeah.
>> And people too partly environment.
>> Yes, right. Yeah.
>> This year I'm a World Environment Day with a theme call for a global change to climate change, yeah? One for the big issue now the world right now and they thinking about climate change. How now can you share how some fellow change, yeah? How climate change in regard to affect the in the Solomon Islands? Climate change.
>> Mhm.
Come again?
>> You should be sharing them with me below what now climate change and we doing in the Solomon Islands so some fellow effect of climate change you looking in the Solomon Islands.
>> Yeah, I'm understanding them.
So uh a lot of uh uh uh NGOs and what that?
Programs and coming help them uh communities blame me uh a lot of the rural communities blame me for managing now uh uh uh environment environmentally we got a lot of programs.
>> Yeah, yeah.
>> Yeah, I think we should by that time uh we got a lot of big celebration there. I think by then we hear them more about it now. Hopefully we save care about him environmentally.
>> Now, what are some simple activities where you looking that they may contribute towards climate change or something? What are some of the activities when contribute towards climate change?
>> You mean you mean no missing anything?
I mean >> Yeah.
>> You know I don't know much about him but I love >> Okay.
>> But I think about uh and completely me before normal. I mean uh uh You mean for environmental loss? Uh the kind of program is like you miss out information about him. How do you care about him? Uh uh environmentally?
>> Yes. Yes.
>> I think that really helps. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah. But the time you hear him climate change, what do come to your mind then?
>> Uh When you hear him climate change, what comes to your mind then is uh uh I mean take care of the the the the the environment for me. And uh But the time you join in this program now, what service for environment then? I mean just tell me more about him after I mean to care of environment for me again.
>> Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Well, they're calling for a change, yeah? Because uh climate can change and something you may not used to, yeah? Before kind time also no cold nice this time.
I'm hot too much. Maybe freeze up gone and uh What are the activities also industry also logging, mining, farming?
Time for spoiling or something. Uh you may like it change, yeah? Uh for you may looking how many different levels of the emissions of the gas where they're causing more of the climate change law. Country blame you.
Do you think you may one for our small action where you may save a dream or something like that individual or community or you may together must work together for fighting this whole issue of climate change. We all need to work together for slowing down mining activities and logging activities where we're cutting down the trees and so on.
We can blame and destroying the environment in the affected areas. But the real problem is this. But we are affected too much.
And also in the area of the law the country we are looking at these activities here and but I really spoil the environment in me.
So I mean we need to call on the law or individuals and the law and the government also for looking after the areas and if we manage them we will have better everything and have a better environment.
This one World Environment Day and and and a new uh yeah new celebration or new event there.
Uh Actually me me been hearing about the for me but then uh uh no more no more like uh You know the World Environment celebrations.
>> Yes.
>> Okay, move come closer Mikey. Um you should have shared them things thingly about what now environment and why environment in I'm him important and what's the aim and need for managing environment?
>> I yes environment law we look at me but I'm not looking in me setup here a lot surrounding it a place place with me I'm environment place with me live land so if because you make you make you make connected for you you you people and everything on non-living and living things so I mean we connect ourselves uh since we depend on each other.
I I need for you me must uh manage him here.
>> Mhm.
>> Meaning if you me you me spoil him by him affecting you me too so the need to manage the environment is a very important.
>> Yeah yeah.
>> A lot of things thing about you about me.
>> It is important.
>> Yeah yeah.
>> Um Mike World Environment Day is coming.
Welcome closer to me.
Uh, with him theme call for global change, yeah, to climate change, yeah.
So, it's all about climate change. Can you share with us some of your thoughts?
What are some of the effects climate change is doing to Solomon Islands?
>> Oh, I just want to say uh, uh, by Uh, you know, me say hello, but you me should uh, look him finish now, yeah. If I put climate change, you me look him uh What that the heat there look him sun hotter? And hotter than Yeah, heat there and climate change now. If you put climate change, I am changing pattern or yeah.
You me been no experience before, yeah.
What the heat there?
And start things, yeah. You look him sea level rise, yeah. Where I am spoiling all the coastal areas, yeah.
Uh, things or place lots uh, sea salt blow me. Last time I am stay uh, intact this time, yeah. All the it I am I am going land, yeah. So, what the effect blow climate change now uh, uh, in in terms of uh, what uh, climate sea level rise, yeah. And other other things uh, I am I am effect blow climate change, yeah.
>> Okay. So, what are some of the activities you think uh, and contribution to which the climate change the Solomon Islands?
>> Okay, if we look low like uh, locally you you you might not deny that small things you me do him low a lot of daily life really you me contribute low uh climate change, yeah. Because I'll tell you a big place no more what's uh, kind of same what factories in here or the industry industries, yeah. Or the place in low or develop countries, but or you me Solomon Islands, me tell him what small things you me do him like gardening, yeah. You me bobo name all about the uh you me cook him or you me put him what the what booze or things, yeah. I am contribute now, yeah. Uh, gases and all things or truck run around here or the exhaust, yeah. Everything, yeah. Uh, you me stop here.
Low understanding blooming gases and what carbon now dioxide and monoxide all these things all that contribute global atmosphere and now and contribute global heat here climate change here. What about any small action?
You think individual government or communities or institutions you should do in addressing climate change. We should talk about you looking truck around go here. Me me thinking of paying for a new car here. What time you tell him also no more me say eat. I think this is one way to never cabin climate change we should not paying truck now.
What do you think some little action you should take them as individual or community or government or national province or government for you may address him climate change law Solomon Islands and globally. Little actions you may do them since them are contributing global climate change.
If you look law for example you may contribute to me. We looking go here.
When you mean no control them now all that vehicles example here.
Anyone I'm going to send them paper you know so all things it If you thought If you mean no control them all that kind of same all imports of vehicles where all that contribute for giving what what bad gases to the atmosphere.
One thing is you may government should be a little bit control them the imports to here but like that uh particular a certain individual must got them no more what two cars and one one business car one family car kind of same here or you may you may encourage them to got them bicycle bicycle no because bicycle no it doesn't give you give what here give him gas here give him yeah so you move all same the little things you may do them here by them helpful addressing climate change therefore yeah.
>> You you talk about you may ban all the booster make them garden.
You think >> gardening yeah smoke them up plenty more you mean you mean you mean depend a lot this all gardening to you money man so what what do you think you go if you miss stop him now by me no I came on a man so question you live it tell him call me that but by me stop him or totally stop him meeting him by by me no possible to me by me no happen I think but at least basically You mean dig him ground number one you mean no need for burn him grass we can just dig it that's what I'm asking instead of me because instead of me burn him here you might cut him cut cut him cut him trees then you mean you mean leave him never rotten because I'm adding something to you I make him soil and fertile or you mean burn him because I'm contributing to all of our local atmosphere gas gas into atmosphere. So any final something like sharing concerning environment and climate change as far as the climate change is concerned it's from my point of view I'm not not one man's duty or responsibility since you me everyone on the island you me know I don't deny the fact that climate change I'm not here it's global so I'm affecting you me so you me must make all of everyone from government to the ones here in the village or let's say villages and communities you mean work together or addressing now this one impact effect of climate change you because you I'm affecting you everyone here like me tell them today not first questions so I'm not responsibility of government seller or a community here a villager or we know me I'm going to be everyone here so you me must work together hands holding hands together here with him up together to you work out for looking at things where you miss a dream for me let's say mitigate or adapt it or things of them for us addressing this one climate issue.
Thank you Owen. I know everything you know about things.
Thank you. So there you are Mike with very insights into you know nice advice.
And so I'm going to get my not pushing go on our one is us working together. We're going to say thank you to Seema Solomon Islands Maritime Authority for yes sponsoring this fellow walk about on the street for making him have him thinking about people about environment as you may ready for celebrating environment day International Environment Day of Friday number five of June this one week. Thank you. Well, what an interesting episode with those guys on the street. Someone was talking about well all the industries in my logging money in my spoiling environment you know those other link up to climate change and someone talk about burning of bushes in the garden below you me you want. Someone was talking about the vehicles in the heavy mirror a stack up too much of Solomon to here and those are the things that have me giving more than this for the emission gears and go go to pull in the environment. So those are some of the actions where you me should take him you want. But don't run away because join us again by me continue waiting this episode on our next part two of this Solomon's best men on the street.
