[00:00:00]Symmetric scales are amazing for jazz improvisation.

[00:00:07]But what is a symmetric scale? Well, a symmetric scale is a scale that has fewer modes than notes. For example, the major scale is not symmetric. If we rotate it around the circle of fifths, every note gives us a different mode.

[00:00:21]Seven notes, seven modes. Each one has its own intervolic formula. But look what happens with the halfhole diminished scale. When we rotate it, we only get two different modes. Half hole and whole half. That's symmetry. So over a dominant chord, I can take something like the Japanese penta chord built on the sixth degree of the halfhole scale.

[00:00:45]Choose a step skip pattern, then make it symmetric. Now the pattern locks into the internal symmetry of the scale, and it works beautifully over dominant sounds.
