Critique of Exoticism and Cultural StereotypingCounterpoint
Analyses celebrating 'Middle Eastern-inspired' elements in game scores often overlook how such choices rely on Orientalist tropes and exotic clichés rather than genuine innovation. These harmonic and timbral borrowings can reinforce reductive stereotypes for emotional effect and marketability, prioritizing Western audiences' nostalgic expectations over culturally respectful or contextually accurate representation in video game music.

Everything YOU MISSED in the Zelda Ocarina of Time Trailer MUSIC
Added:Nintendo just released a brand new trailer for a remake of Zelda Ocarina of Time. Now, if you know anything about this channel, we are obsessed with Zelda music, especially the classics like Ocarina of Time. So, let's break down the music in the newest trailer. By the way, if you've watched this channel before, I haven't filmed in 20 months. A great deal goes into making these videos. So, if you love Zelda music like me, consider liking and subscribing.
Let's do it.
By the way, if I didn't mention this, I have not seen this trailer before. So, this is my first time watching it.
>> Long ago, there was a land called Hyrule, created by beings of supreme divinity.
>> I'm not used to hearing the voice explain.
>> At the very edge of this kingdom, there lay a small forest.
>> We got a Zelda's lullaby close as well.
>> solitary tree quietly watched over the inhabitants of the forest.
These forest dwellers were called the Kokiri.
Each had a fairy companion, and they lived out their innocent lives in these woods.
However, there was one particular boy >> Okay. Okay. Okay.
>> who did not >> I've got to stop. We've got three songs so far. We've got which is of course >> [music] [music] >> So, gorgeous. Uh we've got >> edge of this kingdom, there lay a small >> So, we heard and then this note lingered, went to that note, and I'm so obsessed with Zelda, I'm automatically expecting that note, which we get, which is on the original key, by the way.
And then what's fascinating is they use this note to land back here So, they can do a little mixolydian [music] mode.
Beautiful. Cuz I haven't played this in forever. Okay, well, obviously all of these things are like beginning of Zelda, so we get Saria's Song, which is like Kokiri uh early on friendship, one of the first first character you meet, right? And he walks out and it plays >> [music] >> However, there was one particular boy who did not have a fairy.
>> Very interesting though with voice over.
That's a lot of Uh hold on, hold on, hold on. Okay, so those are the little things that This is why we come to this channel.
>> [laughter] >> So, we got three themes so far. This next one is going to blow your mind.
>> who did not have a fairy.
>> Okay, does anyone recognize that?
And then we get Oh the [music] ending of Zelda Ocarina of Time.
So, it's basically this.
Right, but with this [music] on the bottom.
It's just played like this, which gives it a little bit more of a somber almost heartfelt sort of sound. But, this iconic ending is used over and over again in Zelda, you know, Majora's Mask, Skyward Sword.
>> [music] >> Duty of piloting the divine beasts.
>> Zelda >> So Ganon will feel the sting of my revenge.
>> But the main reason I think of Ocarina of Time is because of this.
Listen to this.
>> Oh.
>> Anyway, I probably went overkill on that, but you don't have to watch it.
>> [laughter] >> This is so good.
So that's the fourth reference [music] we get, which is the ending of Zelda Ocarina of Time.
It's like the Triforce is awakening.
>> Oh.
>> [music] >> Hyrule theme with old demorphing Middle Eastern vibe.
Oh my gosh, I'm so excited for that.
Very cool. Okay. Which I think is the original key as well, B flat.
Is that right?
I don't actually know.
>> [music] >> da da da da da dum Oh, and that's in the original key for Zelda 1.
Right? You almost get like this um Gosh. And then the violin and viola sound behind it does play but it starts off with like a it's [music] kind of a running start.
>> [music] >> So beautiful.
Is that a 40 on a bird?
>> [music] >> It would have been interesting something.
>> [music] >> That was something.
>> [music] [music] >> Okay, wow.
Okay, so that kind of Middle Eastern vibe and first of all it's B flat major, which is what the original [music] >> [music] >> Right?
So they're sticking to that key, which is nice [music] and they're playing a lot of And then this chord Oof.
Um so it's kind of like you play a major chord and then you leave these two here and you >> [music] >> move these two up a half step.
It's a really cool exotic sound. Now, the only other thing is I believe that note [music] is also there.
So we get and then it's just an exotic extended chord with minor and major kind of building some tension. Sounds very Middle Eastern because it's like a >> [music] >> So, very interesting. A little bit more of a It could be a sort of desert-themed, Middle Eastern themed, or could just be a little bit more emotional. After almost 30 years, I think we're all pretty nostalgic >> [laughter] >> and pretty emotional about this. So, it may be that it's just building a little bit of extra tension.
Um but, sticking to the main >> [music] >> But, instead just a little bit of extra >> [music] >> flare, a little extra vibe. Um some tension there with chords like that.
Listen to that.
That's also worth noting that it's very similar to what we just talked about, >> [music] >> which is this.
But, instead now [music] it's So, very beautiful. Wow, what else to say? I can't wait for a new soundtrack.
Can't wait for a new trailer. I will try to keep you posted. Sorry this video is so long. There was a lot to talk about.
Um let me know what you want to see in the comments. What are your thoughts in general about Zelda and the new games coming out, the movie next year? Thank you to my patrons who have stuck with me for 20 months without pretty much a single video.
And as always, Zelda Music Theory out.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Mhm.
