Discontinuing 5-alpha reductase inhibitors like finasteride leads to progressive hair loss, as demonstrated by a user who experienced significant hair loss in the crown and midsection areas after 1.5 years off medication, despite maintaining minoxidil use; this case illustrates that these medications work by blocking DHT, and stopping them removes the protective effect, causing hair follicles to miniaturize again.

Qutting Finasteride: He Lost Hair in 1.5 Years追加:
You can see this is his baseline.
Obviously, you can see [music] some scalp show in his crown area and the midsection does have a bit of scalp show.
But honestly, as you go toward the hairline, right? He has a lot of dense hair.
So, this is him today. And you can see this is exactly why you don't stop taking 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. You guys think these medications don't work?
How about you take a break for 1.5 years and see where you are.
Hey guys, before we continue this video, I would like to mention that we now have liposomal minoxidil sulfate on my website foligainz.com f o l l [music] i g e n z.com.
Go check it out and maybe even try it out.
See you there.
Hello everyone, welcome back to yet another hair review video and we're back on treeless, the largest subreddit and probably forum in the world that concerns the topic of hair loss. And we're looking at the user DJ3962 and the title of his post is quote regression report from 2017 to 2025 unquote quote unquote, whatever.
So, I already read a bit of the post and I'm just going to jump right into it.
Essentially, a quick too long didn't read between 2017 to 2024, he went off of finasteride because he and his wife were planning to have children and his doctor advised that he get off finasteride for family planning purposes. Now, I just want to say this, unless you already have fertility issues as a man, being on 5-alpha reductase inhibitors won't make you infertile. So, if you think this is some kind of birth control, maybe you'll name your kid after finasteride or dutasteride.
Although, I think their brand names are much more I I characteristic. I don't know. Name your kid Propecia. I think there was a video years ago about a lady named Propecia. Kind of an offensive video. In any case, going back to this guy, he's asking to see if he can get to some kind of regrowth, you know, some sort of recovery, some sort of comeback.
If he can get on dutasteride and if that could possibly help him. Now, if we just have a look at his scalp, this is his baseline before he got off of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. So, I think he said he got off around, let's see, October 2024. So, he was using 1 mg oral finasteride and 5% topical minoxidil from 2017 till October 2024.
And I guess he discontinued in October of 2024 and considering at the time of recording this video, it is March 19th, 2026.
He's been off of the medication for quite a while and this post was made 6 days ago. You can see this is his baseline. Obviously, you can see some scalp show in his crown area and the midsection does have a bit of scalp show, but honestly, as you go toward the hairline, right? He has a lot of dense hair.
So, this is a guy who is probably well on his way to recovery. If not, he could have gotten a good amount of improvement in coverage in the crown area and a bit in the midsection area as well.
But unfortunately, he got off the medication. And he had a good reason, too.
So, this is him today and you can see this is exactly why you don't stop taking 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.
Again, he had a reason for him to quit taking it, whether or not it's necessary. For me, I don't think it was necessary.
Um plenty of men use 5-alpha reductase inhibitors while they're trying to have a child with their female partner. So, it's really not that much of an issue.
Again, if you have baseline fertility problems, then you probably shouldn't be taking a drug that has the potential to decrease your semen volume by way of decreasing your prostatic fluid and other sort of fluid that would, you know, make up the semen.
So, if you look closely at a scalp where he is right now, his crown is pretty much decimated.
A lot of hairs in his midsection are gone, right? And it seems he's been off the medication for I think you said a year and a half, right? He said, yeah, he's been off of DHT blockers for 1.5 years. So, if you guys think these medications don't work, how about you take a break for 1.5 years and see where you are.
Now, again, can he make a recovery? I think it's easy just for him to hop back on dutasteride. He might make a recovery, but the brutal once you start playing around with your your dose frequency and even the amount you take, usually when you go below 1 mg or usually when you go below 0.5 mg dutasteride daily, you start to run into these sort of issues, and we don't really know if this guy is going to make a full recovery, but if we just have a quick look at his scalp real quick, if I can zoom in, um yeah, you could see that there are some hairs that are still metabolically active.
They could make a decent amount of width improvement. Maybe he could get some increase in hair count. And mind you, he's still on the minoxidil, right?
He's been on the minoxidil the whole time during his discontinuation of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, primarily finasteride.
But, I would say he's not going to get a full recovery, right? But, you never know unless you try. So, I think this guy should probably get back on finasteride.
Certainly, just go for the dutasteride and see where he ends up in about a year.
And if that doesn't help, obviously, you have KXA26 pyrrolutamide that's shaping up to be a really good option when it comes to topical anti-androgens.
You do have RU58841. It's a bit disputed when it comes to its safety.
Uh you know, its safety I guess rep sheet is kind of controversial because some people might not be getting RU58841.
They might be getting something that is a metabolite of RU58841 or something that could just be entirely different, right? So, who knows what you're getting.
Uh be very careful when it comes to experimental stuff. But, you have the option to use it as long as you talk to your doctor, that is.
But, yeah, that's pretty much it for this video. I just wanted to comment on this because I thought it was such a good example of what happens when you quit finasteride and you stay on minoxidil, right? You're still going to have some loss. So, let's hope this guy is able to get a recovery and again, congratulations on the new family.
Peace.
