In model aircraft, propeller pitch directly affects engine RPM and thrust efficiency; increasing propeller pitch reduces RPM while maintaining thrust, as demonstrated when Scott tested his Mini Max airplane with a 15° propeller running at 7,400-7,850 RPM and planned to increase to 17° to achieve the target 6,000 RPM static range.

Static Test #2 Homemade Airplane with Scott - CCLXIII追加:
Hello, hello. Guess what time it is.
Yep, still 10:30 S time with me, Scott.
Still working on this airplane we built.
Mini Max.
10:30 It's got a Simonini Simonini motor on it, so we're going to call it a 10:30 S.
I kind of like the way the S sounds, too.
But, um we got it built up here about 2 months ago, got it completely built, been tweaking it and all that. We did a taxi test about a month ago.
And about a week or so ago, we did a short flight test.
And come to the conclusion that the propeller did not have enough pitch in it. It was getting too high RPM and high speed, and um didn't have enough thrust.
Just I had to like wind it out and blow it up to get enough thrust. It did have enough thrust if I gave it all the gas, but that's not the idea.
So, I've been working with my buddy over there Ultra-Prop, Lonnie. Let me tell you, he's a hell of a guy, too. You know, I got a a two-bladed prop from Scott Golf who was selling these stump puller motors. Got some 15° blocks in here. They were nine the other day.
So, we're going to get this thing started. I'm going to pull it outside, tie it to the pole.
Uh it's got a lot of thrust. It's got a lot of thrust at high at RPM. Don't have any brakes nothing, so just got to sit there and hold it. But we're going to give it a test and I went out and uh one of my kind and and intelligent and wise viewers said get a optical tachometer and I I don't know if it was uh Senior Izzy or who it was, but uh it was an excellent idea. Why I don't own one already, I don't know, but now I own one.
And a little bit 20 bucks little optical tachometer and I'm going to put that somewhere and um verify that my tachometer's right, cuz that's one thing I'm wondering is such an high RPM if my tachometer's right.
I did a bunch of adjustments with that and went through a bunch of different procedures and settings and they're all correct, so we'll see.
So today we're going to see if this 15° prop works what the RPM is uh what it reads on a tachometer and then what the optical says and figure out if we're going to go flying next or if we're going to put more pitch blocks in. He did include another couple sets of higher degree and lower degree, so I can adjust it.
I'm running running out of nuts and bolts, so every time I use them I hate reusing these nuts and bolts, so I'm running out of nuts.
And um he gave me some nice bolts I can put some tie wire through. I'm not going to do that till we're ready to go.
Anyway, we're going to we're going to start this thing up and check it out.
Oh. Guess what? It is a beautiful day here in Southeastern Virginia.
Hope you're having a beautiful day where you are.
More yet, I hope you're appreciating it.
You got it here?
>> Yeah, I got >> Okay.
Honey.
Okay. checked it over a little bit. I don't see anything that's loose or about to come off.
No.
>> Mhm.
>> I don't need none of that.
>> All right, clear.
Contact.
>> You mind if I use your keys?
>> See the mix signal.
Getting fuel right here.
Turn it down.
>> There you go.
>> Am I good?
>> Little more. Little more. There you go.
>> All right, so we gained some information.
Um I got up to 7,850 RPM >> [snorts] >> on digital tachometer at wide open.
And um the optical tachometer was showing me right around 7,400 to 7,500.
Uh when I dropped it down to 5,000, it was telling me I had 4,650. It's like the um digital tachometer is a little bit further off the higher the RPM a little bit.
>> And it looks like the very most it's off is about 400 and the very least it's off is about 100.
And that's to the optic tachometer, which could be off a little bit, too, but it tells me that we're in not too far out of range and the the motor sounded better. It didn't, you know, you I've been around motors long enough I can tell when one's redlining and winding out and before tachometer was saying 10,500 and it sounded like it.
I have a tool here.
And I don't know if it'll work on this or not. Never used on a motorcycle, but I've always used it on a car. It's an old tach and dwell meter back when um you had points and mainly Chevrolet points for a dwell meter.
Meanwhile, it's got a uh wire. I fixed one of the wires here and then one goes on the ground and one goes to your coil.
Every time the coil fires, um supposed to be a revolution. We'll see, but I'm I'm going to hook it up next time. See what this says.
It goes up to 14,000, so Meanwhile, that's all for this episode.
I'm going to call up Manny right now and um tell him what I got and see what he says. I got a feeling he's going to want me to move up to a 17° block. He He sent me a a 15, 16, 17, and 18.
And um we're looking for around 6,000 rpm static, so I think I'm thinking about another 2° or so at least. We'll see what happens. You can only go as high as 18 as far as I know.
Meanwhile, you can tell and feel it's got a lot of thrust. Sounds real smooth.
It's going to be a beauty to fly here shortly. Um as soon as I get this straight tomorrow, I'll do another test on it. I'm going to see if I can't catch me a lift to the airport.
And you know what? Keep looking up cuz you might you might see me up there but I know one thing that's where our Lord and Savior is right now. He's coming this way and he's going to come down in the clouds [music] just like I am.
Um I'm much more graceful than me.
But uh that's something to look forward to.
Hope to see you there for the flight and uh and the second flight, we'll call the main flight.
Take care.
