3 Weird Adjustments That Instantly Cleaned Up My Iron Striking

[00:00:00]These are the little adjustments that I would make. And one of them is a little bit weird. If I was really looking for ball then divot contact. I mean like take this hole. I played this earlier.

[00:00:12]And this for sure the 15th here as shor links gets your heart rate going because I've got to make sure I get good contact. If I don't well I'm going to end up in the drink and that's going to seriously cost me. Like I'm sure there's a hole at your golf course. I mean there's sure there's a hole you played maybe last season or potentially going to play this season that's going to get your heart rate going. Well, I just want to give you three little things that I've used some my experience of being a top 50 coach and this is what's best right now with on this journey of trying to get to DP World Tour Q School. We're collaborating with some of the best tour coach in the world. So bring that together. We've got a great recipe for some simple tips. The first one, go and grab your most lofted club. Now, I I know that might sound a little strange with talking about irons, but there's a really really good reason for this, and when I explain this to a lot of people, it's like, okay, and and I'm not going to lie, this is one that I use all the time. So, think about this logically.

[00:01:11]This is my 46 degree. You could do this with your 58. The reason why I actually do it with 46 is if I do it with 58, even a good strike's going to end up in the water. So, I've got 46 in my hand.

[00:01:22]But it tells you a lot of stories about how the ball is reacting to how your club is being delivered to it. So if I just sort of move it around here, right?

[00:01:32]If I have my hands behind the ball, there's a lot more loft on there. So the ball is going to go higher. Okay? It's probably going to be a little bit thin, too. So if if I think about this the opposite way, if I get my hands ahead of the golf ball, then well, I'm going to have a lot less loft. a lot less loft is going to bring the flight down. Then I would think about, well, what have I got to do to do that? Well, just simply like, and this is the way I think you've got to start thinking about your golf swing. If you're looking to improve how you are on the range, and this is something I I I'm trying to work hard on, right? And it's hard that transition of being pretty damn good on the range, but then really struggling to take it to the golf course is just making these logical points.

[00:02:18]So, ask yourself a question, right? Oh, how do I get my hands ahead? Well, I'm not going to move my hands first. I'm gonna transfer my weight. I'm gonna open my hips. Well, where my hands fallen?

[00:02:31]So, reverse engineer this, right? Well, if I want to come here and I've got one of my most lofted clubs in my bag, a good strike is going to come out lower than I anticipate. Well, isn't that then a brilliant way of training? Not all of us have a Trackman or all of those things. What you can do is the first tip, grab one of your most lofted clubs and try and play it as low as you can from a normal ball position. It tells you a lot and you dare say right, you might do the first one and it might go high, you might even fat it and thin it.

[00:03:03]But you'll then start to learn start moving in this direction, getting that weight more forwards. And once you start controlling where that weight is more forwards, low point ahead, that's that, you know, that crunchy one where it's like, o, I didn't feel that. Like at the minute, you might have like one or two rounds. Like starting to use some of these. We're starting to see more of them in my game, which is great. But I also want you to see loads of them, too.

[00:03:30]So the first one, grab one of your most lofted clubs. I do feel a little bit nervous here, though. There's a puff of wind there.

[00:03:38]This has got to be done so well in order for me to hit the green. So, normal ball position, I'm trying to picture I've got to come in like this if I want to try and hit this club as low as I can with one of my most lofted clubs. If I don't do that, well, that's going to end up high and not handsome. No, not at all. Right.

[00:03:58]Okay. So, here we go.

[00:04:04]Look how I moved into that. Where did I finish now? That should just get to the front of the green. Ah, just about on the front edge. But come and look at this. Right, this is like proof in the pudding. Look where my tea was.

[00:04:20]Right, it was there. Then look where my divot is. Right. I really like things that give you instant feedback because as golfers, we're always looking for like clarification of was that good? And we don't have a trap man. don't have our coach with me. But what that did tell me was, well, I must have moved pretty good in that direction. So, there's number one. Let's move into number two. And I often find when I've done this one, I sort of maybe I'm not going to say I got a club longer with Anders, but maybe half a club longer. So, if we can steal a few yards and get a better strike, well, that's a Brucey bonus for all of us. I'm actually now going to take the club that I would actually hit here to that back flag. It measures 200 yards, but there's actually like a little bit of a shelf halfway through the screen.

[00:05:04]Crazy thing is on this screen, it measures 70 yards long. 70. So, you can put a pin here at the front and it's like a delightful wedge potentially, but then it can go all the way horrible towards the back. Makes it really challenging, but I'm going to go with 79. Now, this next one I would say is very much for the range. Like I said, this is one I've done with Anders on the range. But the final one, I dare say, is one that we can sort of build into your pre-shot routine. That's that's what I've done anyway. So, I I'm sure you want to sort of get a little snippet of that, too. So, if I said to you simply, right, and this is how I think about it.

[00:05:41]If I get the lowest point of my swing with my iron ahead of the ball, I can pretty much be confident in my strike.

[00:05:50]And let's just think about it as simple as that. So, what I would love for you to do is let's take first I'm not even thinking about the ball for a minute.

[00:05:58]I'm just going to practice for a second.

[00:06:00]Going to the ball straight away would be a probably a crazy thing if I'm honest.

[00:06:05]So, we're going to go a club head width apart in the stance. I want you to make your back swing, right? And when you feel your hands like around shoulder height, just take a little bit of a step through, down, and through. So again, what we're trying to feel here in a quite an exaggerated way if I'm honest, but if if I'm looking at this from my point of view of one trying to play, but then using my experience as a coach, I'm like, well, I I know when I'm trying to change something in my swing, I've got to like really exaggerate it for it to come through. So my coaching head on is like, right, okay, well, how can I exaggerate that for you? And then also what I've used in my game. So again, watch this. I really get that feeling of moving my low point ahead and turning through. So, I dare say have two or three practice swings doing that.

[00:06:57]And I'm far less focused with this drill, which is why it's very much rangebased of where that ball's going to go. Not ideal for this hole. I I do know that. But what a backdrop. So, I'm going to start off. Let's find out where that ball position would be. Move my right foot. Okay. So, I've just got my right and left foot where I'd normally hit seven. I'm going to step back again.

[00:07:20]Step through to where my front foot would be or momentum going that way. I know it's a little bit weird. It's a little bit crazy, but this is honestly the sensation that I mean I've loved it.

[00:07:34]I've really sort of come one of my like staple drills if I'm honest. So, back and we go. Let's get that feeling. Step and through. Again, I'm not really focused where the ball was. It's gone a little bit up the right. But what I am bothered about is what that strike was like. Really, really what that strike was like for somebody, right? I have worked so hard on trying to get my weight through. I've always played my golf probably a little bit while you clicked on this video. Not enough shaffling, not hitting my irions long enough. Like, I've been in that space where I've been a little bit like this.

[00:08:09]Well, there's two of the little tricks that I've been using. Here's the final one that I I promise you has become such a staple part of my routine, like pre-shot routine. So, something I can take to the golf course, hang my hat on when I do feel there's a little bit of trouble. I do feel a little bit nervous because it happens, right? You might feel it coming down the last mate, trying to take the money off them, coming down the last at your club championship, captain's day, whatever it might be, right? There's pressure at every single level of this sport. That's why we love it. Now, this is actually one that I saw Ludvig do on the range.

[00:08:48]I'm gonna say maybe a year ago, maybe a little bit longer than a year ago, and I was like, why is he doing that? Now, I've sort of taken my own little interpretation of this from my background of coaching and going, okay, well, what is the recipe? Well, we know we want to get our weight moving a little bit forwards, right? So if I know what my weight moving forwards, like if I just stand here and do this, what has to happen in the golf swing? Well, my chest has to move, my feet have to move, my weight has to move, right? So what I saw him doing was top hand on, palm on the side. Now, if I do this correctly, and again, I'm going to give you this best as I can from a players aspect. I think here the feeling. So you've got something to feel when you do this. And that's a really important thing, right?

[00:09:33]We all see the numbers, but feel it. If I feel this right, good one. Keep my palm on throughout. For me to keep my palm on the side of that club throughout, well, I must have rotated my upper half pretty good. I must have rotated this pretty good. If I was just like, okay, I keep it on on the way back, but then I lose it. Well, that's then going to be a little bit of, well, not enough, maybe not enough. Lower half, maybe an upper half. Let's not even go as complicated as that because if I'm trying to play and put my players head on here, that's not achievable to take to the golf course. So, I'm trying to feel that I just keep my palm on for as long as I can. Now, that maybe came off like here. And the sensation I get is that this is turning more and my weight's going this way. It's as simple as that. Pre-shot routine wise, I'm just feeling one practice swing like this.

[00:10:28]I now feel comfortable to play this one. Right, let's play this one.
