What I understand now is that affirmations don't land in a mind that is already full. They don't land when everything is tight, reactive, and saturated with the same thoughts looping again and again. They land in a space you create. One of the reasons affirmations didn't work for me at first is that I was trying to place them on top of a mind that was already full of doubts, of old narratives, of fears that I hadn't really taken the time to look at. So, even when I was saying something positive, it was immediately met by another thought contradicting it, questioning it, bringing me back to what I already believed. And there was no real space for anything new to enter.
What changed over time is that through therapy, through coaching, and actually doing a deeper work, looking at my patterns, my emotions, my reactions, I started to create a bit of distance between me and my thoughts.
