Ants use pheromone trails to communicate and navigate, but when these trails loop back on themselves due to navigation errors or terrain shape, the stronger scent convinces ants it's the correct path, causing them to march in circles until exhaustion and death without any predators or obstacles present.

This Deadly Ant Trap Happens Without PredatorsAdded:
When a scout ant finds food, it releases pheromones from its abdomen, creating a chemical trail from the food source back to the nest. Other ants detect the scent and follow it. If the route proves successful, each Ant strengthens the trail by adding its own pheromones, but sometimes because of navigation errors or the shape of the terrain. The pheromone trail loops back on itself. When that happens, the ants keep following the circle because the stronger scent convinces them it's the correct path. This phenomenon is called an Ant mill. Without outside intervention, the ants can march in circles for hours or even days until they eventually die from exhaustion.
Despite there being no predators or obstacles in their way.
