Tardigrades are microscopic organisms (half a millimeter long) that can survive extreme conditions including the vacuum of space, temperatures as low as -200°C, radiation 1000 times stronger than lethal human doses, and pressures six times deeper than the ocean floor; they enter a death-like state called 'tun' where they expel all water from their body and shut down completely with no metabolism or aging, allowing them to remain dormant for decades and then resume normal activity when thawed, with scientists still unable to determine how to kill them.
