Music Composer Reacts - Der Hexenkönig (Arknights)

[00:00:00]This has been a popular request. I think it's pronounced uh Hexen König um from Arknights. My name is Corey or Everything Fantasy and I have my keyboard in front of me.

[00:00:09]I don't really know what to expect but because it's been a popular suggestion, if I had to guess, I'd predict possibly epic style, orchestra, maybe some vocals as well but like kind of choir vocals, too. I'm also taking inspiration from the image as well, but let's get straight into this.

[00:00:46]We're in the key of G minor.

[00:00:49]>> [music] >> I think it was something like that, but we have lower strings as well.

[00:00:58]>> [music] >> That kind of sound. I'm also getting the kind of the feeling of marching almost.

[00:01:03]There's a kind of There's definitely a marching sensation to this.

[00:01:13]Oh, the vocals. There we go.

[00:01:18]>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Oh, okay. Okay. Oh, this is a really interesting section. Okay, so we had that choir that I was talking about. It was kind of doing um stabs, kind of like um that kind of thing.

[00:01:54]Um I just I just I love the I love the repeated phrase, the with the electronic drum kit going behind it as well.

[00:02:05]Um which sounded a bit like this.

[00:02:11]>> [music] [music] >> That idea. I I love the combination.

[00:02:19]This is one of the few games that I've play Well, both played and have listened to the music of that combines those two things, an orchestra with electronic drum kits.

[00:02:28]Limbus Company does it, too.

[00:02:44]Whatever is marching has now arrived.

[00:02:47]>> [laughter] [music] [music] [music] >> Okay, what I was doing just that I'm looking at the image to see if there's anything I can glean from this. I kind of can't. This feels like a This sort of a doomsday style piece, like everything is coming to an end type piece of music.

[00:03:34]Especially with that choir going.

[00:03:44]That feels like a oh no, this is judgment day kind of thing.

[00:03:51]>> [music] [music] >> I love the >> [music] >> This is something I've heard in a few different Arknights pieces now where you have the epic section end followed by a solo instrument like a cello or a violin enter. It just creates this kind of like a a okay, you may have experienced the worst of this, but I'm going to leave you with a lingering intensity essentially.

[00:04:59]That sounds really almost creepy.

[00:05:02]>> [music] >> It's just It's just creepy, disturbing.

[00:05:07]It's like It's almost like you know those parts in games and films where the enemy does something like out of order that you're not expecting? Like when an enemy that's like, "I'm going to destroy something." and they actually follow through with it and it's quite destructive. I'm getting that. This feels This feels nasty. Like what I'm watching is just like a whoa, whoa, whoa. You weren't supposed to That isn't following the script. I'm kind of getting that idea from this.

[00:05:55]I love that kind of the build up into something as well. I don't think we're going to get another epic section. If I had to predict, this is going to kind of drift off into kind of like a a lingering, uncomfortable, disturbing section. But this I just I love how dissonant this feels, the kind of the clash of note.

[00:06:10]That kind of thing. The clash of notes constantly to create that intensity.

[00:06:21]Kind of like this.

[00:06:29]>> [music] [music] >> Well, forget what I said. Um I love the introduction of the of the more kind of rock elements here. We have a drum kit.

[00:06:48]>> [music] >> We have the return of that phrase again.

[00:07:00]I love that I love that phrase. I wonder if it's a motif of anything perhaps.

[00:07:09]>> [music] [music] [music] >> Okay, I'm too curious. I want to check the translation of this.

[00:07:38]Ooh. Oh, wait. Really? Um This is Google Translate, so it could be totally off, but the Witch King? Does that sound right?

[00:07:47]I'd expect to see whoever this Witch King is in the thumbnail, but maybe not.

[00:07:50]Um yeah, I don't know. I'd love to know some a little bit about Not Not too many spoilers or anything like that cuz I am still gradually getting through Arknights, just really slowly. Um but man, this this is this is a What an enemy. What a king if if this is an actual Witch King.

[00:08:06]Um yeah, this is such an impressive piece of music, but at the same time I'm left I'm left hating whoever this is about. I hate this person. I don't even know them yet.
