Player Ratings: Crystal Palace 1 - 0 Rayo Vallecano | EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSAdded:
Hello.
Welcome back to the player ratings. No, we didn't forget.
Just been real busy in times.
And today we'll be talking about the historical 1-0 Palace win over Real Betis at Red Bull Arena in Leipzig to win us our first ever European trophy. Amazing.
Please remember to like, hype, subscribe. We really appreciate all of your subscriptions. Also want to thank everyone that I saw and spoke to at the match who thanked us for what we do.
Thank you guys for watching and subscribing. Really appreciate it. Got a lot of support from people at the match. It was, you know, it was really great. Um want to welcome Xavier in. Zave, how are you today?
>> I'm good. Yeah, I mean still it's been, what, 3 days, 2 and 1/2 days since the final and still, you know, big smile on my face after, you know, witnessing what happened. Um wasn't able to be there like you and and Louie and D and and so many other people. Really happy that you guys were able to experience it. Also some of my friends down here, um that I watch matches with in Philadelphia, Will and Jack and Mike. Want to shout them out.
Um they were able to be there as well.
So, really happy for everyone who was able to experience it. Looked absolutely brilliant. Um I wasn't able to, you know, pull it off this time, but obviously, you know, watched the match and just still just Yeah, it's just an amazing feeling, really. Um No, it still hasn't sunk in, to be honest, but it's it's amazing. Um I mean, a little over a year ago, wondering if you'd ever win a trophy and now it's been three in like 375 days or something, I think it was. But yeah, it's amazing. I mean, just no better time to be supporting the club right now and just feels really special to be a part of this all and you know, witnessing it all.
>> Yeah, I'm very happy for you and younger fans who haven't had to experience the negative or as much negativity as someone like I have. But yeah, you're right. Three trophies in base of little bit over years amazing. Shout out to the players. Shout out to Steve Parish, the ownership and obviously Oliver Glasner.
Um if you want to see more about or hear more about my uh trip, there's a vlog out. I'm not going to details, but basically I was in Frankfurt and Leipzig or in Germany, let's say, for 40-plus hours and didn't sleep one wink.
But without a doubt, one of the best games of my life. I waited to book late cuz I was hoping Zaha could somehow make it. He wasn't able to, but wonderful experience. Um uh again, I I couldn't I couldn't be happier for the club and for our fan base. So, we'll start with this. I'll pop this up real quick.
What a great graphic, Anderson there raising the trophy. Uh it was amazing to be there. Um the veins are a little different today. You'll catch on as we go along, but um Zaha, overall thoughts on the match before I get into individual ratings.
>> I can't lie. I did not have a good feeling before and I don't really know why. Maybe it was because I wasn't going to be there. Not that, you know, I have I have any impact on the match, but like the finals, too. I didn't go to the um 2016 FA Cup final. Didn't have a good feeling before that one, either, but I was there, you know, against Watford and [clears throat] against City. And it was just weird. Maybe it was cuz we were favorites. I'm not sure. I'm not going to lie. I just had a a weird feeling before the match all all day. I didn't Like I felt much better when we were playing against City. It was It was really strange. Um So, yeah, before the match I I wasn't feeling great. It was a bit of a boost, you know, seeing Ward in back in the starting 11 when that came out, you know, 90, whatever, 75 minutes before the match. So, it was a big boost, but I just didn't feel great. I I was reassured by the fact that, you know, Glasner was managing us and I knew he'd have, you know, one last plan for us, you know, to get the job done. But, yeah, it was a weird feeling.
Like, I just I just couldn't shake the feeling that, I know, Rayo Vallecano, which there's been a lot of talk in the days after the match about how good of a fan base they are and I've always quite liked Rayo. So, I'm not, you know, surprised to hear that. It's just knowing who they are as a club, um, their roots and their supportive base.
I'm not surprised to hear that.
Our fans had a good time with them. Um, I think we are very similar clubs, but just couldn't shake the feeling that, you know, they hadn't won one and we had won, you know, our first ever cup last season. You know, maybe it might have been their turn. Um, I just it was kind of hard and, you know, they were underdogs. Kind of hard to shake the feeling that, obviously, you know, not on the same type of scale of us to City, but, you know, us being favorites and them being underdogs and trying to get their first trophy. So, it was weird. I I couldn't really shake it. And then, the first half I didn't particularly enjoy, to be honest, but I thought we were excellent in the second half and probably should have won by more than one goal. So, we Honestly, we weren't really concerned, um, like, I didn't really think they were going to score, to be honest with you.
Um, so, you know, once we had gotten that goal, we had we had done the job, but I was definitely nervous beforehand and then, the first 45 minutes didn't help, but I thought we were very good in the second half and uh, we're full value, you know, to get the win and and the trophy.
>> Yeah, I met a lot of Rayo Vallecano fans. I spent up to about 4:00 in the morning at the, uh, train station. Um, and I bumped into tons of them. They were so classy, so, um, uh, kind and they congratulated me and other Palace fans on on the win and nothing bad to say about them at all.
They were really fantastic. Their their their display before the match was brilliant. Their their cheering on of their of their team was brilliant. They stayed they stayed for the trophy presentation.
Class all around. So, shout out to Rayo Vallecano. Um, I popped up the stats.
Um, you mentioned it was not a great watch for us. I thought I think I the main thing is we'll get through it is I think a lot of the basic up to tempo by the players second half. Couldn't press for 90 minutes but we did start pressing a lot more and putting the tempo second half which led us to the victory but you're right, chances we had 2.58 xG but I kind of 0.56 they really they only had one shot on target.
They took 10 at one. We had three shots on target.
Obviously with the to me the four best chances are the Mitchell miss end of the first half. Obviously Mateta scores. Um Pino hitting both posts amazing on the free kick. I don't know how that happened and then obviously then the great save off of the Mateta shot by the by the Rayo Vallecano goalkeeper but yeah, definitely more chances.
Touching the box we had 21 they had only 11. Possession again we did concede possession to them didn't really care.
42% 58% but again our passing a little bit down 70% 70% versus 80%. Very techy game as far as yellow cards we had three they had six.
I'll get to them in a minute later on but by himself Camarasa drew three yellow cards on on Rayo Vallecano players. Talk about the how important he is to the team that's an example right there. So I'll take this off now and we'll get back to the individual. So let's start. Dean Henderson Both gave him a 10.
Um again faith they had 10 shots at one one to save I think it was the it was a something with the exact save what I think it was the I can't remember which one it was. It was a I know because I mean earlier Allemão shot wide. The uh the Frut uh set set [snorts] up Lopes who shot wide.
Uh Camello had a shot that was blocked.
Which one was the one that I would say was it Allemão?
>> from like the one like Lake he like it was like a volley. It wasn't it wasn't really testing him but yeah that was the only one on target. Yeah.
>> But in the first half there were those two shots I just mentioned Allemão one and the the the the Lopes that went wide and I think one of them he was definitely he Ben Henderson was definitely blocked by Koné but if that was on target he scores but it goes wide.
>> the Lopes. Yeah it was the Lopes one.
>> The Lopez one, yeah. I That side he was in trouble, but I will give credit to Hendo, great leadership throughout the season, especially in that match.
I was getting a little upset of late cuz he hadn't had a clean sheet. He did that in that match, 18 for the season. Um came out for some crosses a couple of times, and again his passing was decent, 49 out of 25. Um long long balls not as good, 7 out of 18. But I thought again, led us to the trophy, got to lift the trophy. Your thoughts on how Henderson played?
>> Not much to add in terms of you know, what he did in the match. Um but I do think you know, after we sold Mark right at the end of the window and Dino stepped up into the role and you know, it was some tough times around January and you know, for everybody as we've, you know, discussed.
And I think, you know, we were able to get through that, obviously, uh pick up a bit of form.
Obviously, you know, not having real concerns about going down.
And then, obviously, you know, winning the Conference League. So, you know, he's, you know, the captain for that. And I do think, you know, taking over halfway through the season after losing such an influential captain in Mark, I think, you know, deserves some top marks. And I just want to shout him out for that.
>> Totally agree on that. Um next, Danny Muñoz. Both gave him a 10. Your thoughts on how Danny Muñoz played in the final.
>> I enjoyed his performance, to be honest.
I thought some of the positions he was taking up, um along with Saïss, were decent. I do think that Rayo had a clear plan to try and nullify that right side, which is why I don't think we Saïss really didn't wasn't as influential in this match as he has been in other Conference League matches. I think that was a a clear plan. I also do think that by Rayo doing that, they allowed us to have much more of the ball centrally.
And I do think Morgan Gibbs-White took full advantage of that. Obviously, Morgan especially did.
You know, for the goal, um, you know, that we'll get into. But, yeah, I um I thought Munos was decent in terms of what was going on down his side. Like I said, I thought we defended excellently as a unit on Wednesday night. And I do think obviously Munos was part of that.
Don't really remember their left winger having really any joy, to be honest. Like even the chances that the half chances that we're thinking about, most of them came down our like left side. Um, so I do think you know Danny had a part to play with that. And eventually, you know, for the goal, um, he plays the ball inside after, you know, some possession to Kamara, who in turn recycles it to Warren, who takes all that space then you know leads to the goal. So, he was, you know, partly involved in that as well. So, yeah, um, Danny's been great for us. I would have liked that uh header that time instead of like Danny being on the end of that. I think it ends differently if if it is. Um, we've seen his ability to score on headers on that kind of crossfield ball, you know, to the back post. You know, he did it against Kiev, did it against uh What was it? Premier League match. Did it against Burnley. Um, >> Burnley, yeah.
>> So, yeah, uh I think it would have been a bit of a different story instead of Ty. But, I thought, again, I thought Ty was excellent as we'll get into. And I I thought Danny was excellent as well.
>> Yeah, you're absolutely right about the um Iñigo Pérez plan for our right side.
Danny didn't get as much joy, but that allowed Ty to get Ty had so much space at time. Then you're right, he was one that ended the cross. If it's the other side, it would have been Muñoz. But, I thought he played really well. Again, didn't give um um Who do you say was playing on that side again? I've got the game with it. The The Frutos or was it López?
I You're on mute.
Sorry.
>> So, De Frutos was the uh right midfielder. So, that was Ty. Um, and López was central midfielder. Um, I'm looking at it now. I can't remember his name, but he got hooked. So, I do remember that, but it was um Garcia.
>> Garcia.
>> Yeah, Alvaro Garcia, yeah.
>> Yeah. So, it didn't give him any joy.
Defensively, he very solid. Had four out of five aerial duels won, two clearances, and two recoveries. Again, almost got to the end of a great Pino cross that missed both him and Sarr, but I thought he did a really good job. You know, he's when when um Lerma and Richarlison aren't in, he's taking the long throws. But, I thought Danny had a really good game.
throughout. So, let's move on to his counterpart left wing. I didn't put up the lineup, by the way. Obviously, it was a 3-4-2-1 um that we always play.
Um so, I forgot to put that up before, but yeah. Um Time Mitchell both gave him a 10.
Um I'll go first. I thought Tie did did really well. He drew a a yellow on Palazón in the first half, and I thought that was midway through, and I thought that was very key. I thought Palazón was there was going to be their most dangerous player. With the yellow card, he can't you know, get into tackles as much. So, that was really good.
Um Obviously, had the great chance to score before half that you mentioned before. Really has to score that. Great ball by Wharton. Um played a lovely ball second half early second half to JP that uh Lejeune uh makes a great clearance on. Um he worked really well with Pino to get a ball to Sarr that was into that shot that Sarr hit into the side net, and that was that was set up by both uh Pino and uh Mitchell. Did misjudge a cross late in the first half uh that Tete came out to block from I think it was Carmelo. And then, late in the game long busting run down the side. Uh great run take it into the Real territory, and then he wins a corner to get pressure off of us. I mean, again, definitely uh the left side was our was our better side. But, again, just a a really good Tie performance defensively. Two tackles, three clearances, six recoveries.
Um My again, the the only the only issue I had was um uh was the miss. Uh you know, you got to put it on target at least. But, that aside, I thought Tie was brilliant. Your thoughts on how Tie played?
>> I thought Tie was absolutely excellent.
You mentioned the um the one where he played in saw and saw heading into the side netting. He'd gone the ball in like an inside left channel.
He's using his body and and plays Sarr on a a nice slider over on. It's just his development, especially, you know, going forward is absolutely unbelievable. It's just I'm not sure that was something he could do a year ago, never mind, you know, when he first came into the side. So, just so much more comfortable on the ball and obviously his defensive capabilities haven't you know, changed at all. Uh if you look at FootMob, I thought the Frutos which I'm not sure if I talked about it, but the Frutos I think was their best or the I thought would be the most dangerous attacking player was the right winger and he would I didn't he didn't do anything.
Um and that's why I had him shut down.
He was the worst rated outfield player um of anyone who started uh the Frutos. So, I thought Tiago easily won that battle. I thought it was a big battle uh for us and you know, Louis talked about it, but you know, when we think about, you know, how Royal might trouble us, I thought the Frutos and you know, Louis I talked about it as well might be the one to deal with it, but we both felt reassured that, you know, he was going to be going one v one against Tiago and Tiago just wins those battles most of the times and I thought he won it again. Thought he was excellent. And also, there's another attacking bit of play that he was involved in. Uh Does wonderfully to control the ball by the touchline and then release it inside and it was a chance that uh Pienaar ended up playing for Mateta uh that ended up being a save. That came from the work from Tiago as well. So, yeah, Tiago Tiago was absolutely excellent um in terms of his defensive ability uh what he did defensively and what he did going forward. I thought he was he was absolutely unbelievable. Um bit gutted he, you know, wasn't able to score. I know he's added a bit more goals to the, you know, repertoire this season.
Honestly, that chance he had was probably easier than some of the goals he scored. The Schalke finish was more difficult than that and the West Ham finish was definitely more difficult than that. But, look like he jumped a little bit too early um and he just kind of just got it all wrong. Didn't really need to get much power thinking of letting Glatzel go on far post. But, either way, it didn't end up mattering.
I thought Yeah, I thought his performance as a whole was was absolutely excellent. Just really pleased for him.
Um we talked about how much, you know, they meant for the club afterwards in in the interview. I thought it was it was brilliant. Just really happy for him, you know, how well he's been doing in the last couple years, how much he's developed. He's just been, you know, absolutely unbelievable for us and it's been great to see.
>> Yeah, great interview, you're right, post-match. They all of them were really good. His was particularly I love I'll get to it later on, but they had the um Watkin and Trend last one was hilarious and Palace TV the two of them acting like uh two comedians and trying to sing the peanut song, which is funny. But you're right about I don't usually talk about other opposition staff, but you're right about the Fructos Salvia. Um 21 touches in 70 minutes.
None of 11 passing. Uh no shots on target. No chances created. Successful dribbles one out of two. And ground duels lost two out of five. So you you're right. Um Ty just basically pocketed him the entire match. Let's go on to our vice captain, Max Watkin. Uh both gave him a 10.
Again, here's the pattern. Your thoughts on how you think Nakamba played?
>> I thought he was good. That El Ahmadi is all right, he's a bit of a journeyman, but I watched him I can't remember where I played him in the last match, but I flipped it on and he had come on. He didn't start the match, but he's good. Like he's a good physical presence. Like I think he uses body well.
Uh he holds it up well. He doesn't score many goals. Like I you know, he scored um I think their winner when they beat Shrewsbury 1-0 in the in the second leg.
I believe that was him. He doesn't score he hasn't scored that many goals this season, but in terms of his hold-up play and what he can do, he's not a bad player at all. So I thought it might present potentially some challenges, but I thought Max in particular, who was matched up against him, did quite well, to be honest. Um Again, just really, you know, Max has been unbelievable for us this season, you know, being having to deal with so much change in, you know, the back three.
You you losing, you know, Bartley to his left-hand side, which had been so key to him Sorry, so key for us.
You know, since Glasner's come in and, you know, being able to deal with that and, you know, not skip a beat, that was excellent. And I I I do think that, you know, Reyad comes in on Wednesday night, you know, with a different partner, just hasn't played much football at all in the last 18 months. And then he's coming in, he's starting a European final.
And then on his right side is Canvio.
So, we're talking about two very, very young center-backs, one of which has barely played. And I thought the two of them like in terms of Reyad and Canvio, I thought they were both really, really good. And I do think having Max in there, you know, you know, in between them was a big part of that. So, just I know he just does so much of the organization in in that back three, which is so important for our defensive solidity. And I thought he did another excellent job of that again on Wednesday night, cuz again we're talking about Raya having one shot on target, which was catching practice for Medina, and just not really doing much else to trouble us. And obviously Max had a big part to play in that. So, >> Yeah. You're right about Alamar being a handful. You mentioned his Strasbourg he scored the one goal in both matches, the 1-0 win away and the 1-0 win at home. He scored in the in the run-up to this game against Girona in the 1-1 draw. And he scored in the 2-0 win over Villarreal.
So, you're right. But in this match, non-factor. 20 touches in 90 minutes, one shot on target we mentioned. Uh did I thought he he also missed a chance. I thought Alamar and he committed two fouls. And that's what he caused again, Lequar was really, really good. I thought he stats out for it before I get into some plays I thought he played really well in or did really well in.
89% passing, um which is 25 out of 28.
Two passes in the final third, but defensively, one tackle.
Um did commit two fouls. He had eight clearances. Was immense. And again, he shut Alamar down. I thought he played really well. Um the stand-out play for me for him was, I'm sure you remember it, um JD tried to shield the ball out of play sillily like the 16th minute.
They would get the ball cross the ball.
You know, and who who who blocks it?
It's the quad there. That was a massive play because again, it would have destroyed um uh Convo's confidence that cuz he what he's doing on purpose he's he's sure I'll get to him in a minute, but he shouldn't have been doing that. Um he then uh later on the game he made a nice block of an Alvaro cross within six-yard box and he had a great defending uh cut out of a cross by Garcia. Just where he needed to be each time. There wasn't any stand out individual like three or four moments, but just overall just solid by Max.
Thought he played really, really well.
And again, to play with Convo and Riazo in a big game and get them through that match I think was was excellent. Let's get to JD.
Gave him a 10, you gave him a 10. And again, the theme is obviously we're giving all of them a 10 cuz we won the Conference League. There's no point in being nitpicky over individual players.
We will talk about them individual performances, what they did and didn't do right, but I just felt like it was right that we give them all 10s. Again, he was he had a very shaky first half. I mentioned that play just now where he just had to get the ball clear cuz the funny enough before that play to me that was a nice play winning the ball, playing down the line. Then the ball came right back and he shouldn't have showed it. That aside though, I thought he was I thought JD played well. Um again, he's he's prone to to moments of of madness, but again, he's 19 years old. Let's say it again, he's 19 years old. He's going to make mistakes. For him to come up so big and play so well through his whole European campaign with Mark gone was amazing. It really was. Um throughout the match, 32 out of 36, 89% passing. Um 46 touches, two out of three long balls. Tackles, one one tackle, two clearances, three recoveries, ground duels three out of three, was one for four in uh aerial duels, but committed zero fouls, was fouled twice. Again, there were moments where I was a little worried about him, but I thought overall JD had an excellent final, especially in the second half where we adjusted our game plan a little bit, put more pressure on them. But your thoughts on how JD played.
>> Yeah, I thought he was good. There was the bit that you mentioned. Um and also the second half he slips at one point in the play and now the side.
But, like I I said earlier in the show, it it felt like every little mistake that he was making earlier in the season was getting punished with a goal. And >> Every one.
>> it just doesn't generally just doesn't work. Like not every single mistake gets punished with a goal. Fair bit do at the top level cuz, you know, that's that's what happens in small margins, but not every single one in the way that was happening for him earlier in the season.
Um, so I'm really pleased, you know, that those mistakes didn't end up mattering and he had, you know, some recovery and be able to deal with it after cuz I thought other than that he was quite good. You know, I thought he used the ball well. Um, we didn't have as much of it as we normally do. I do think that was part of the plan. Um, was to let Rio have it and just keep everything in front of us and, you know, basically there them to break us down, which, you know, they couldn't really do um, at any sort of, you know, sustained level or any particular, you know, high level. So, it made a lot of sense to me, but I'm just really pleased for JD on a personal level. It's just a real roller coaster of a season for him.
Um, again, like about 4 months ago I was wondering like after those right wing back shifts, especially the one at Arsenal, if we were going to see him again this season.
Like he just it just seemed like it was one of those where it's like he he showed some promise. You you could see the vision with him, but you know, the performance has tailed off a little bit, which I guess not I guess, like would make sense because again, we're talking about someone who's only in their second professional season and playing much more football than he ever had, you know, coming to us.
>> Right.
>> And then I just thought it might be one of those scenarios in which, you know, he just he's on the bench, maybe gets a a run out like here and there, but we just don't really see him. And then obviously, you know, Mark goes and then he steps in and he steps in absolutely wonderfully. And I remember I was over there, we were over there, you know, for in November um, for the Alkmaar league, uh, the Alkmaar group stage match and then Brighton at home in the Premier League and JD had come in for Mark against Brighton. I thought he was excellent, man of the match. You know, at that left center back, I thought he was unbelievable. And I remember, you know, saying to you and Louie that the guy he replaced was already here. And then Yeah.
We're talking about, you know, yeah, like, you know, don't want to jump to any conclusions, don't want to do things too soon, but he just his attributes and what he is able to add is are just so good. And I'm just really pleased for him. He comes into the side at a very difficult time for us. Like I said, we just weren't playing well, obviously, when Mark had gone.
And I think at that point, I'm not even sure have we even been through the knockouts, sorry, the playoffs? So, I'm not even sure we'd gone through Mostar yet by that point.
>> I can check, but I'm not sure either.
Yeah.
>> So, we're talking about, like, basically JD coming in for the entire knockout stage of the Conference League, playing well basically the entire step of the way.
And like I said, he had those two mistakes, but I just thought as a whole this season, I thought he was really, really good. And he was very good yesterday. And I think again, we're talking about 19 as a center back, those kinds of mistakes, you know, the shielding you know, not being taken off of the ball and getting you know, stripped of it. And then, you know, the slip. Like those kind of things happen. They happen a little bit less, you know, as people players get more experience and, you know, just play more football.
Um but I'm just I'm so pleased for him and how he's done individually this season.
He seems to be really He seems to really love it here, to be honest. And I can only imagine, you know, it's a huge transition for him. We're talking about um someone who I can't imagine has been away from home very often or for a particularly long time, just moving to a completely new country, completely new language as a teenager.
You know, coming into a Premier League side with some pretty big ambitions for, you know, how the season might look. And I think he rose to the challenge magnificently. And just in terms of going forward, I just think he's a huge player for us. I I I really do think the sky's the limit for him. And I think we'll have him for at least one more season, if not two. And then again, and I've said I really wouldn't be surprised if the big boys come calling. I'm talking about the likes of, you know, PSG, to be honest with you. Um but I I I do think that is the level that he can play at. So, I'm really just pleased for him on a personal level just it the season really looked dead and buried for him a couple months ago. He's come out ending a Conference League champion after, you know, basically playing 90 for every knockout match that we had.
So, just really, really pleased for JD on a personal level and just think he's been really, really good for us and a great piece of talent ID by us getting him in for a good fee and a a fee that will certainly be multiplying whenever the time comes. But, yeah, just a wonderful talent and it really hums for him on a personal level and obviously really, really love the And he wasn't the only one, um, obviously, but, you know, doing JP's bit, the celebration after after the goal. It's not the first time uh, he's done it or, you know, copied the celebration that. So, I do think, um, I'd be surprised if he wasn't particularly well-liked in in the changing room.
>> So, thing I want to add, you're right about Mostar. He He didn't play the first game against Real Betis, but he was in but but he played the second leg against Mostar. So, that's when he kind of came into in in in in into the team.
Sec- uh, secondly, you're right about, um, him being a gay replacement and the confidence that, again, shout out to, um, Glasner. We see how if you don't react well to not playing with Glasner, whether it be in his private, you don't play for him again. Uche didn't react when not taken out of the out of the squad, unfortunately, didn't play again.
I remember, obviously, uh, Rob Holding last season, Ahamada this season. You know, if you don't react not to what they have to say. So, for a young kid to do that at 19 and and and make a mistake, but then bounce back has been brilliant. Um, and and lastly, I want to add, I think having strong personalities with French in the side really, really helped him. You had Mateta, you had Lacroix, you had Saar. You then you bring in Guassan. There's so many French-speaking players in that team.
Oh, I forgot Cheick Doucouré is in there. You know, he didn't play. You know, you got Doucouré. It's a You know, and that's thing that really, really helped him. So, um, I agree with you.
Uh, he has been, you know, made mistakes but he's been fantastic the entire season. Then we move on to the surprise starter for me, Chadi Riad.
Both gave him a 10. Very surprised that he started. In fact, when we were talking before the match, D and I and Louie talked about the lineup. I don't think D mentioned to me that Riad I said I asked him about the lineup. I said which one goes? He goes, "Yeah." But I think he just meant he was on the bench.
I didn't realize until they announced the teams that Riad was starting. I was like, "Wow."
Not a problem, by the way, cuz he was brilliant.
But I guess we wanted to point out that the shock that I had. I thought he played a really good game. Funny enough, he was up against uh How do you pronounce it? Akamach? A player that he played with at Betis and also for Morocco in Morocco this season when he was 14.
Um but I thought he played really well. Um Yes, did miss a chance on a double um post by Pino. Could have put it in. But I think it would have been offside. I think I lost what we played again. The initial >> He was off. I don't know why >> Right. How did he put that in? Go ahead.
>> And then having like having missing like a big chance and it's like massively boosted their massively boosted their chance but I'm like the chance is offside.
Also, I swear they called it offside. Or did they call it a foul?
>> I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I >> he was definitely off. Yeah, he was definitely off.
>> You know what? Let me actually let me pop that up cuz I got the stats for him.
But I thought he played really well.
Uh whoops, that's the wrong one. My my apologies.
Um actually share this tab instead. So, I will switch it up. He actually had these stats up that just popped up. He had the one the most duels at nine, had the most tackles at three.
Um also had seven clearances, four aerial clearances, five recoveries, six out of six uh aerial duels.
Passing. Well, he tried to do what No one else had The fact that what he was trying to do was get the ball forward to Mateta or Sarr or Pino. Six passes to final third.
Five out of nine long balls. Lost possession one time. But again, 83% passing. I thought Chadi played really, really well. Again, a surprise that he played. Loved his post-match interview.
They watched him mention them talk about Akamach and how they're friends and he felt bad for him. But you know, he's really happy to run. Love the celebrations after with him and and and the the other players. Just really happy for him, man. He That that guy didn't realize Aké had also had an ACL injury, same as him. So, to come back from that within, you know, 2 years, he's got a big future. I mean, the only issue I've had with him all season was fitness, and I thought maybe being on Richarlison in the game, but you really can't bring him in if he has an ankle injury with with upper one goal. But, I thought Chadi played really, really, really well. So, happy for him to actually be a part of winning a trophy cuz then he wasn't part of the squad last year that won the FA Cup or he was part of the squad earlier in the season with the Community Shield.
But, very happy for him. Your thoughts on how Chadi played.
>> I again, I I thought he was so good. I'm again another I'm just so pleased for him on a personal level. You mentioned just now the bit about the FA Cup. He didn't really celebrate after it. And I think it's because he felt a bit embarrassed.
>> a part of it. He shouldn't have been, but he wasn't a He didn't feel a part of it in the same way he did. And so, to go from that, you know, 12 months ago to this, it's just unbelievable. And I'm not going to lie, I was a little worried. Not because I don't rate him, but it's just we're talking about, you know, a European final and someone just has not played a lot of football recently.
But, yeah, he was he was brilliant. Like you said, he was the one the center back that was really doing the passing. I thought there was sometimes he would he also put the ball forward and aerially, like I know there was that one that he kind of missed that led to that um like kind of weird volley. I don't remember who had it in the first half. That was the only mistake he he made.
>> game, yeah.
>> And it didn't cost us. And other than that, aerially, he was unbelievable. He had the most defensive contributions of our defenders. He had 12 in total. Um but, the passing was okay.
Um I know I think it was like 83% but, I thought it was all right, to be honest. Like I It's not like I was watching it and I thought his passing was bad. And I do think he should have taken more risk with his passing trying to get the ball into to Warren and Kamada.
>> third, the 12 final passes final third shows it exactly, yeah.
>> And Pino as well. I'm trying to get him into the game by skipping the midfield and and trying to play it into him directly. So, I I really enjoyed his performance and again, like so many of these guys, um just so pleased for him on a personal level, you know, being able to get back after just having a horrible time with injuries and to be a part of this and really enjoy it. And another guy who I hadn't really seen any interviews from him recently. So, it's hard to, you know, I figured that the group is is rather close-knit, but just seeing um some of the comments that he's making on guys' Instagrams for like posts that they made like after the match like he commented on the post. Yeah.
Commented on Devine's post and called him Justin Bieber. Just hilarious. And then Richards had a post and he called Richards a gringo, which is hilarious, which is just like a Spanish for like a term for an American.
Um So, that was hilarious as well. But, yeah, I I didn't even know these guys had these types of personalities. So, it's really good to kind of see that kind of play out, you know, after the match. But, again, just really happy for Chadi. Is he going to the Is he in the Moroccan squad?
For the World Cup? Have they announced it?
>> Yes. Yes.
>> Yeah.
>> I'm 90% sure I'll double check what you're talking about. I'm pretty sure he was because I know they said they're 12 now cuz Goodman got in today. So, they're 12 players. I'll double check.
Yeah.
>> Oh, Goodman. Yeah, so selfishly, I'm not going to lie, I I really hope he doesn't play too much. I'm happy he'll be there, you know, it's a brilliant achievement for him on a personal level, but I I really don't want any setbacks for him, you know, this summer. I do think he can be a very big player for us in terms of, you know, going forward, you know, if he's gotten past these injuries. So, again, just another guy I'm very, very happy for on a personal level. And I just thought again, other than that little bit in the first half, he didn't really put a foot wrong. And to come in into that type of match and that type of environment and play 90 minutes and be that faultless, be part of a clean sheet, and be as good as he was, just really, really pleased for him on a personal level.
>> Yeah, with you 100%. Um I'm looking now cuz I I don't want to move on with that. I don't see it here.
Oh, Moroccan squad announcement 4 days ago.
You know what? If he hadn't made it that they would have mentioned it. So, I don't think he did make it, right?
Because they did mention it. I don't know if Palace Palace announced it.
Um defenders, no, Chadi Riad is going. I see it now. Uh Issa Diop, Chadi Riad, Nayef Aguerd.
Yeah, he's going. Good for him. He's going to be in the World Cup. Awesome.
I'm happy for him. So, that's great.
Moving on quickly, not quick Moving on.
Adam Wharton 10 from me, 10 from you, 10 from the fan. Man of the match. Brilliant performance, especially second half.
I'll let you go first, Adam Wharton.
>> Yeah, I just Yeah, I mean unbelievable. I >> Yeah.
>> He's been so good, and the man of the match I thought was fully warranted. I thought even in the first half when we weren't particularly good, I thought him and Kamada were our our two standout players, you know, again to him, going to be clapping for him as well. The The midfield duo, and I I've said this after um I think it was the Villa semi-final last year, that that performance against Villa was the best I'd I'd seen from a a central midfield pair, you know, in my time watching Palace.
I thought obviously they were very good in the final against City, not the same kind of heights, but I thought honestly that that final was just as good as the performance against Villa. Obviously not as comfortable as a win, but I thought the two of them in tandem were excellent. Wharton in particularly, I thought was really excellent. I he just took so much responsibility. There's a bit when he uh the ball he plays to Tai.
There's so much bits of play before the actual ball gets played to the Tai, where it's basically just all him. Like he's taking responsibility every single moment. Like he's asking for the ball off, I think Tai initially, or maybe it's Riad, and he wraps one in um like around the corner, and then it comes back to him.
He plays a long ball out to JP, and then again, and that's all the way on the other side of the pitch who you're talking about. He's on the uh left hand side of that point. Ball goes out to JP.
JP uh wins it.
Gets recycled a bit, goes back to Wharton, again taking responsibility, and he plays is lovely ball into Tai, which should have been an assist.
But again, all of that was just him. And I just thought the way I don't know what his passing stats were. I'm sure honestly they probably weren't great in the way that it kind of is for him, but it's not again, it's not obviously it's cuz he's not a bad passer. It's the risk that he takes because he knows he's such a good passer, allows him to try things that other guys don't. And I just thought he was absolutely brilliant. And again, in the first half where I I didn't enjoy it. I I texted you. Um and I was saying to everyone I was in the pub with that I I really didn't enjoy the first half performance. And I thought it would get better. And I was happy to get through it and you know, but in terms of the performances I enjoyed in the first half, I thought him and Daichi were quite good. And obviously defense I thought was quite good too. But I just wasn't really enjoying a lot of what I saw. Um I just thought we need to pick up the pace a bit. And I thought Werdum was trying to do that a lot in the first half. And I do think in the second half we responded to it more. But I just thought he was absolutely excellent. And then obviously you know, the goal comes from him, you know, I didn't realize watching it I've seen the goal. I mean, I don't even like I can't It's got to be over a hundred times at this point like the goal. But in terms of like where he actually picks up the ball initially.
Like you see him running with the ball for a long time in the highlight that they show. You don't realize how deeply he picks up the ball. Like he gets it probably about five yards into the attacking half. And he basically brings it all the way to the 18. And the thing I was thinking of not while the match is happening obviously he's caught up in it. But after the fact was I'm wondering if he doesn't if he doesn't score that goal against Brentford if 10 yards earlier. Yeah, if 10 yards earlier instead of like doing that playing that kind of like crossfield ball to Minamino on the back post.
>> Exactly the same thing. You're right.
You're right.
>> And I'm just really pleased for him, you know, backing his abilities. Like again, he's a wonderful technician. Um you know, in terms of his left and his right foot. Like we've seen the kind of pass he's been playing recently with his right foot. Uh you were there against Everton um when he hit the the post on a right foot strike. Like he uses right foot quite well. Much better than most left-footed technicians usually can cuz they usually don't have to use their right foot because you know, their left foot is so good. But just both feet obviously his left foot's better. But I just thought I really appreciate the responsibility he took on. Like it was one of those where it was like it felt like he is like told himself that it needs to be him that is dragging us forward and eventually creating the goal, and he did. And obviously he doesn't get the assist for it, but the shot is a great shot. Um the keeper I think was quite decent and had been quite good. I don't think he does a great job with it. I'm thankful that he didn't, obviously cuz it goes right to JP, but just really, really pleased um for Adam recently, and I thought his response after, you know, not mentioning not being in England squad, which generally ridiculous decision, um but a very mature, professional response from him, um which is not surprising. He just seems to be very mature and professional beyond his years. Like you could still can sometimes forget how young he is.
He's been with us for so long. He's still quite young and early, you know, in his football career, but what a wonderful player, um and his family really seems to love it here. And it's it's quite funny cuz, you know, he's from the Blackburn-ish area, obviously so Northwest England coming down to London, but they all love it. I always see his brother is posting after the match. His mom was there >> Mom was there.
>> leading leading a one more year one more year chant. Um So I I I hope it's I hope it is at least one more year. I would I would really enjoy it, um because again we'll have European football, and he really seems to be enjoying it here. I He was really relishing, you know, being a big part of the win on Wednesday and being able to enjoy the celebrations, obviously cuz after the FA Cup he was concussed, so he wasn't part of any of it. So I'm really pleased for him on a personal level, too, fully remember everything cuz I saw something about a week ago. It says he doesn't even remember some parts of the FA Cup, like after the concussion. Like it There were some things he remembers, but they're like generally things that he was like asking Mark, like what was going on in the match, which I he shouldn't have been playing at that point, obviously. He's very clearly concussed, but obviously we were able to experience this, and if you saw his ankle after the match, I'm not sure if you saw it.
>> I saw the two pictures that that it was there.
>> Awful. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Awful. So I can only imagine how bad uh Richard's was.
Like if he wasn't able to go, so it must have been worse than that. And Ward's was terrible and he was saying that he wasn't going to let that, you know, stop him from playing and he wasn't even limping or anything. But yeah, what a performance. I mean, I love the guy and again, I talk about how good he is.
We've spent the entire, you know, season talking about how good he is and how important he is to us and what he does so well in the line-breaking passes and using the ball so well. There's never any wasted touches. The passes always seem to have the right weight on them. And he's just so, so good. He's been so good for us and he's been so important for us and I'll very much the man of the match performance for me. And I thought also defensively he did some great work as well. Um that yellow card wasn't great. He was He was definitely late for that one. He does need to get a bit better at that.
Kind of reminds me of um like a very um a real throwback here, but like Scholes, like Paul Scholes couldn't tackle at all. But he loved diving into it. He loved to tackle, but he couldn't tackle.
I I think Ward's kind of the same way.
Like Ward does He really enjoys trying to make a tackle, but he can't really tackle. But I enjoy how much he's willing to get stuck in um because you know, without technically gifted he is, it's not something, you know, that a lot of technically gifted technically gifted footballers do, but he's willing to, you know, to grind and and dig in and and do that bit. But yeah, I I thought he was unbelievable. I know I've been talking about him for a while, but again, talking about a man of the match performance in a European final and I I really wanted to just extol his virtues.
I think he had a a weird patch in the beginning in the middle of the season. I thought he started off really well. Middle of the season was a bit off, but I think the last couple months I think he's been excellent. And again, this should definitely be on the plane and it's a ridiculous decision that he's not, but I thoroughly enjoyed his performance this season. I thought he was absolutely excellent on Wednesday.
>> Yeah, I have to agree with this not much I can really add. Um I, you know, being there, seeing it in person, you see how good he is, how his vision is, his pre-orientation is.
Um the way I mean, it was a quick pass by Kamara to him. He just picks up the ball and then just drive and drives and I love about the play because it was on the right side. We drew all the Vallecano players to the right side.
Kamada is a great switch. That's why there's so much [snorts] space. And you're absolutely right, Xavier.
Overlapping him was Tie. Tie was wide open out wide. He could have easily laid the ball off. And but we're all yelling when he gets like 25 yards, "Shoot!
Shoot! Shoot!" And had he not had the shot against um Was it Everton? No, who'd he score against again?
>> Brentford. It was Brentford.
>> Brentford. Had he not scored that goal, he I think he had the confidence to do that. Great shot. Um bobbled by the keeper. Shin uh coughed in by JP. We'll get to later on. But no, I thought first half played really, really well.
Brilliant, brilliant uh celebration on the goal. But I thought first half did really, really well again. My main issue was Palazón. And I think even though he did get the foul on him and the yellow card, I thought he did a good job of helping neutralize him along with Kamada. But um just just just really good again. He's the one that plays he puts that ball in first half late obviously for Tie who who heads it wide. He does all over again. I just thought it was a great performance. I mean, I put up the stats here. Four crosses, 50 touches. But But he also had 30 had 37 passing. Not bad.
87 81%. The two chances he created we talked about. 12 passes I mentioned it was chat. It was he had 12 passes in final third. That he being being um Waton. Five recoveries, three out of six ground duels won, two out of five aerial duels won. He and uh Kamada bossed the midfield, which was important for us to do. Possession-wise, no. But as far as, you know, making the the the right plays, the right runs, the right passes.
I thought Waton was absolutely brilliant. Loved Loved the post-match with him and uh Søren Larsson. He deserved the break this summer. I'm glad he's not going to the World Cup. If you're going to put him on the bench for for 4 weeks, leave him in America in hot weather. Let him go on holiday with girlfriend, come back fit and firing next year. As his mom said, "Give me one more year, Adam. One more year in the Europa League. I'd love it." But fantastic by Adam Waton. Deserved man of the match. He was brilliant. And his partner, Daichi Kamada, also gets a 10.
Um Um, going to fire out stats while I get into individual performance by um Kamada.
60 matches this season for Palace.
One Kamada played 25 together.
They won 12. They drew five. They lost only eight. In the last 10 matches, they lost only two games playing together.
You remember them? The Fiorentina away 2-1 when one came off injured.
And then the 3-1 loss the next match against the Sorry, the 2 weeks later when we lost to Liverpool 3-1. In that In that stretch of 10 matches, we beat Spurs, drew to Lanica, then beat Lanica, beat Fiorentina in the first leg, beat Shakhtar away, beat Shakhtar at home, drew to Everton, drew to Brentford, and then beat Real. Those two, I've said it before, those two were brilliant. So, let me get into Kamada's performance.
Really, really great again. Um, drew during the match, drew three yellow cards. Three yellow cards, actually. Let me pop this up real quick. Passing was really good, 33 out of 38. Um, but drew three yellow cards. Um, a a a a rare kind of play a player's um Set up a chance, had eight passes in final third, four out of six long balls.
Again, he starts the play that leads to the goal. I thought he and Wharton worked hard, tackled back, created opportunities, used his base well. I mean, a lot of time Kamada picked the ball and just drive it at their defense, you know, pushing them back. I thought Kamada was so, so good. I've advocated for Kamada and Wharton to play together since, you know, last year towards the end of season they would play so good. I thought Kamada was so, so good. So, so good, especially playing Wharton.
Without them the, you know, in that midfield dominating, we don't win that match. We just don't find a way to up get an opportunity. But, I thought Kamada did really well. Your thoughts on how how tight he played.
>> Yeah, not much to add again. I thought he was brilliant. Just in terms of the defensive work. He was everywhere. Every blade of grass was covered.
Um, and not only, you know, you mentioned the winning the the three yellow cards. He was willing to kick, you know, some Real players when we needed to. Took some good fouls. You know, he committed three. Um but I always think that part of his game has been underrated in terms of how much he's willing to dig in. And it Yeah, if this was Eberechi, >> better tackling. One of the good tacklers.
>> Yeah. He is. And I say if this is it, Eberechi, it's it's been an absolute pleasure. I did Again, seeing some stuff on social saying he might want to stay another year, but I'm just another guy. I'm just really pleased for him cuz obviously we know everything about how his Palace how it started and you know, how it's finished.
You know, talking came here, you know, wanted to make history. Mentioned that in his you know, >> Imagine saying that. I mean, he made history or what? I mean, amazing. Yeah, he did say that. I remember >> Yeah. And then, you know, obviously the first 6 months doesn't go great, but then, you know, if we have a better central midfield pairing than Kamada and and Wharton, then you know, we've we're really going to be hitting some some real heights because I don't know if it's going to get any better than those two. Like, it's just It's been a real pleasure to watch those two, you know, in the engine room. I've I've thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm just really pleased again for how Eberechi, you know, how his career started and how it's ended.
He's just been absolutely wonderful for us and just seems like a wonderful guy and it seems to be very well-liked and seems to honestly came out of his shell a bit. I can't imagine a scenario where he's also doing JP celebration after the goal. Um I don't know if you noticed that as well, but he also did it. It just feels like that would have been impossible to imagine >> that happening. Yeah, crazy. Yeah.
>> Like 15 months ago. So, yeah, I again, I've I've always liked him, but I when you got him, I rated him and I was always willing to give him more time because I knew the kind of player he was and that kind of quality always shines through. It's not like, you know, he'd been doing it for like he'd been he'd been an established professional in top leagues across Europe for nearly a decade. So, it was only a matter of time before the quality was going to shine through and and boy has it. And I'm just really happy he decided to follow Glasner. And really happy we're able to watch him for a couple years. And again, you know, if this is it, I have no complaints. You know, it goes down, you know, as I think you know, one of the members in what I think has been our best central midfield partnership in terms of what they won for the club and what they've done for the club and just in terms of the performances I've seen again, I mentioned that Villa one that semi-final is the best one I've ever seen and I do think that conference league one against Rio the other day maybe a touch short of that you know, cuz you beat Villa a little bit more comfortably but two of the best central midfield performances by a pairing and a duo that I've seen in my time watching Palace is Palace and again it's been a real pleasure Daichi and again if this is it.
Thank you for everything. Um, but yeah, what a what a wonderful player and it seems to be like a lovely guy and just was a pleasure to watch him while he was here and and again and if that was it cuz that was some way to sign off in terms of how much he gave to the side and again that European announce that he brought to the side that now I hope we we all have you know, heading into the Europa League and see how many guys we're able to retain but now you know, we played what 16 conference league games 15 I think it was went through fair few you know, playoffs and and knock out and you know, we're going to have that experience now and I think obviously you know, Europa League is going to be much more difficult and obviously recruitment to come and all those things but it's going to be very good to have other guys in the side who have that experience now but I do think Daichi was a huge huge part of getting us over the line this European competition with all the experience that he has and obviously that big goal against Shakhtar in the in the first leg and that was the winner right? It was a 2-1. Yeah, so obviously and yeah, Lass and Schlupp scored the third goal. Yeah, you're right. Yeah, it's been a pleasure Daichi and um, if that was it it was that was some way to go.
>> I agree.
Move on to our 10th start with Sa.
10 to get 10. 10 from me 10 from me.
Your thoughts on how Sa played.
>> Like I mentioned before, Sa doesn't always have a lot of Sa really doesn't get the ball very often just generally even when he does score when he is particularly dangerous you'll see like his touches and it'll be somewhere in the 20s.
Um, that's kind of the player that he is for us and even still I don't think it was his best match, and I do think part of that was Raya like really trying to >> The guy on our right side.
>> Yeah, which makes sense. I mean, obviously, you know, he's the top scorer, was the conference player of the season. So, obviously, you know, that's who they were going to set out to keep out of the game. I do think there was a chance There was a chance early in the first half. I can't remember it was But I do remember it was early in the match. Must have been the first half.
>> And then Mitrovic Mitrovic set him up.
He slips, and Mitrovic sets him up, but the pass got blocked. Yeah.
>> Yes, exactly. I thought he might be in there. That was unlucky. Um >> Unlucky, yeah.
>> That chance in the second half, I was I was rewatching it, wondering if maybe he could try and shake open up his body and and hit a far post, but >> But Pereira Mitrovic set him up the side that he shot, yeah.
>> There wasn't really any room there. So, I I I did see what he was trying to do by trying to to hit it near post if he could force a save or maybe it would go in. But like I said, not his He's been I I thought he was particularly dangerous, and I do think how good he is was very important for us because, you know, his direct running and, you know, opening up space you know, for other players.
>> off him. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
The one they actually did.
>> Exactly. So, I thought that part was was really really important, and you know, it wasn't, you know, his day in terms of getting the goal, the big goal that he's he's done you know, basically since he's got here. But I mean, obviously, none of this happens without him and all the goals he's scored this season. So, fair enough that he obviously didn't get a goal in the final. I did actually back him to score. I thought he would cuz he just scored so many big goals for us.
So, I am surprised that it wasn't him who ended up getting the winner cuz it always feels like it's been him recently. But again, I thought, you know, just what he adds to the side in terms of his directness uh is always been very important for Glaser system, and I do think it was a big part of why the left side and the other two that we're about to speak to was able to get a bit more joy.
>> Totally agree.
Um again, yeah, again, earlier that, you know, the just slipping, but I thought again he did a really good job. All again, he I thought the threat of Sa was more important than what Sa actually did. Did have a opportunity to mention the side netting shot, but he was involved again in a lot of stuff. The free kick that um Pino double post was won by Sa when lot of fouls. He got fouled in the first half and got medical attention. And then the ref they even got kicked in the face. The ref didn't even give a yellow card or anything. It was weird, but I thought Sa was dangerous um the whole game again. He only had 25 touches. He had the most touches of any player in the opposition box. He had five. So, he was always in a dangerous position, but you mentioned it.
Um You know, the the Conference League play Golden Boot winner got uh the Conference League overall tournament um most outstanding player. I thought Sa again uh throughout the tournament was great.
And again, the threat of him was dangerous. Again, he got the most joy from switching to the left side a couple of times when with with Pino uh moving more centrally, but I thought that Real Real Real knew Real knew don't need the right side Muños and Sa beat us, and he didn't. Thankfully, others came into the to the fore.
Others being for in particular Yeremy Pino. Um but I gave him a 10. You gave him a 10.
I thought Pino had an excellent first half, especially um He He got fouled um like fifth minute uh um what got us a free kick with got a yellow on Ciss in the 20th minute right away. Tried to put Sa in the 31st minute, but it was cut out. It was great build up play. Just the execution was poor. He plays in Muños nice interplay, but then there was that handball Muños had in the box. Um and again, we mentioned, you know, the free kick was so unlucky.
If we had If we give out an award this season as the most unlucky player in Palace shirt, Pino wins it hands down. Goals that shouldn't have been called for offside called, deflected off players in offside positions, goals taken away, numerous chances he set up for other players on the plate that they've missed. And then again, he hits And he's done that. He did it against Marcus with that free kick. The guy is a good free kick taker.
He needs to be on the ball more. I've never ever seen in my whole life that watching football for a lot of years a player hit the post with that ball in the ground. You know, I've seen it bounce at the second post.
never seen it go. Amazing. I mean, so unlucky.
Uh after the game, great celebrations with um Strindberg Larsen on his shoulders. Really didn't seem to enjoy, obviously.
Um Funny thing, the stats don't back up um some of the things as far as his passing wasn't great. But again, he's trying to make passes. He tried about 22 trying to make passes that other players couldn't make. Um you know, just kind of up when we up the tempo second half, but I thought overall Eze played really, really, really well. Um again, unlucky not to score. But your thoughts on how Eze played.
>> Yeah, completely agree. You mentioned unlucky as player of the season. I one of the most unlucky players for Palace in the last like 5 to 10 years, to be honest. I've never seen anything like it with that free kick. And we talk about his uh the expected stats in terms of the assist.
You know, just not getting nearly as many assists as how many chances he created. It's It's coming. And I'm really happy to have him at the club.
We'll see what happens, you know, obviously with the new managerial appointment. That's something to worry about, you know, after, you know, she still relish and soak this in.
But I I'm excited to see him next season. I got I really do think it's coming in terms of more output. I really And I mentioned, you know, earlier I said not really enjoying the first half.
But I mentioned Ward and Ward and Kouyaté that I really enjoyed. I forgot to mention Eze. So I really did enjoy his performance in the first half.
Thought he was also taking responsibility.
Like wanting to get on the ball, trying to take risks with the passes, uh winning fouls, you know, trying to take people on. I thought he was really good.
And again, we talk about just the creation of the chances not leading to the assist. He has the pass for JP in the second half. Um the JP doesn't really catch in the way that I think he would have liked. And you know, the Real keeper is able to save it. So again, not only Eze unlucky to not score, unlucky not get an assist as well. Um I thought he was really, really good in terms of again, like I said, wanting to get on the ball, wanting to see chances, wanting to be dangerous.
Um and wanting to create chances for us.
I I really, really enjoyed his performance. Um And I just think generally, honestly, basically he had those couple cameos. I'm thinking about the one Warnock or maybe was it Warnock or Who did he beat next? Yeah, Warnock. He beat him next time. He came on in that match. Um and I thought he was taking his time.
>> him on late and they both opened up a lot of space opportunities in that game.
Yeah.
>> I think basically since then like it was just cameos at that point cuz the sign was starting but the cameos were very encouraging and I I was seeing some good signs and I was liking what I was seeing and then obviously Cassano gets injured and Pino comes into the side. And I do think just generally like it's not all been great to be fair but I do think just generally since he's come back into the side like I think he's been quite good and you can see you know, he's a good player in the Spanish you know, World Cup side you know, they're not bringing guys who can't play especially you know, it's not even like he's one of at one of the big clubs in Spain you know, he's with us um in a foreign country you know, to Spain so yeah, um I think there are big things coming for him and I really enjoyed his performance and the responsibility especially in the first half in terms of attacking wise of that front three that he tried to take on and just really really enjoyed it and again just I'm happy for him on a personal level cuz I can imagine his season at some points was very very difficult for him you know, moving to a new country different climate different language not really that many other Spanish speakers in the side.
>> Right.
>> It not going like you may have hoped at some points but you know, for it to end up like this just really really pleased for him on a personal level and I I can imagine he could feel very part of you know, the win cuz he was a big part of you know, what happened on Wednesday even though he was at points a bit part player for us this season and he was obviously a very big player for us on on Wednesday night. So I'm very pleased for him on a personal level. He definitely seemed like he was enjoying it. So I'm I'm really happy for him and very excited to see what's next for him.
>> Final thing for me on social media when he discovered the GoPro up up in the in the corner and he starts dancing. Um listen, 23 years old he's won his second European trophy he's got now Europa League and he's got Conference League. I guess the next one is to end it with the Champions League but hopefully with Palace just kidding. Um but honestly um he's he played 51 matches this year, more than any he's had his whole career.
Started off with Villarreal, had seven goals, one assist, then seven goals, four assists, then four goals, six assists, then four goals and 10 assists.
Sorry, four goals, nine assists last season. This year, if you include the two Villarreal games he played for Espanyol, 53 games, he had five goals, six assists. So, his his average is what he did this year output-wise was was was on par, and he honestly should have should have easily had could have had 10 goals, 10 assists. We wouldn't blink at it. He could have easily done that cuz that's you mentioned about the XG stuff.
So, great job by Pino. I think he'll push on next season. Um, last starter, Jean-Philippe Mateta. Both gave him 10.
Um, what I'll say is wow.
A boom the boom that I experienced at in Leipzig was amazing. Um, luckily, I actually caught it on video, so if you're on any social media platforms, I think it'll be on the vlog. Instagram probably has it on my account, but amazing to see um it the celebration by everybody else is amazing. Jean-Philippe Mateta getting up so high, Edouard getting in there.
You mentioned Daichi, brilliant. Listen, 16 goals this season. You know, we can go over we won't do it now, go over what you know, what happened in January window, etc. I'm so glad that um, he's Listen, he's generally a really good guy. You can tell by the way that Hodgson spoke about him after the game, how the manager picked him out all the time, how he interacts with his teammates. He wasn't doing anything malicious. He just wanted more money. Um, but again, I'm so happy that he got that goal. I would have been happy with anybody getting the winner, but for Jean-Philippe to get it now, down in history, folk hero of Crystal Palace. Um, since he came back again, and I think the injury was a big issue, and I'm really glad that when he did stay, he didn't play for like seven, eight weeks. You can tell that once he came back, he you know, he scored some important goals for us. Um, 16 goals is nothing to to to to to to to laugh at or to to to thing. He had 17 last year, 19 year before. This is the best output he's had. Just again, recently, the Via Canales goal, the Arsenal goal, the Everton goal, and obviously he had the two goal against Newcastle and the goal against Fiorentina. I mean, honestly, um just really really I couldn't be any more pleased for it for JP, but also for us as a club for him to get that goal. I just thought he played really really well. He did have that second chance to make it 2-0 when Pino breaks on the left um puts the ball in, a great save by Betalla. Really could have scored that, but when he went off in the 76th minute, the ovation was brilliant from the fans for him coming off. Um love the post-match stuff with him. So happy for him. What does he say?
It was fantastic and he's right. Great by great to go down as scoring a European uh winning goal for Crystal Palace. Listen, man.
Awesome, JP. Your thoughts on JP before we get on to the subs.
>> Yeah, again, another guy on a personal I'm really really pleased for. You know, we talked about what happened over in January ad nauseam and I know it left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. Did it for me as well, but again, you know, trying to remove myself from, you know, the red and blue blinders, you know, and being a supporter and just, you know, understanding that these guys are trying to do what's best for their career even though, you know, I don't think he went about it in the right way, but I'm just obviously very very happy he ended up staying with us. He is the best striker we've had in, you know, the Premier League era.
I think, to be honest, I'm I'm not sure if there is a another one, you know, for going back to I didn't see Chris Armstrong play, so I can't speak, you know, for Chris Armstrong. I never saw him see Wright and Bright, so I can't speak for those guys, but if we're talking about like since then, like AJ was, you know, one of my first Palace heroes. Clear of AJ, it's clear of Murray, obviously, and other strikers that we've had. Um it's unbelievable, really, and I'm again, would have been happy with anyone to score it, but I am particularly pleased that it was him. It it felt fitting for it to be him after everything that had happened this season. Um it was just kind of funny the way that it happened because it was it was like his calf. Like it wasn't even a shin. It was like it was literally just his calf. He was in the right place at the right time and the celebrations were wonderful. He's obviously a very well-liked guy in the dressing room and I mentioned this. I don't think I put it on socials, but the fact that I think it it really speaks volumes for how well-liked he is because we're talking about you mentioned all the people that did the celebrations. One of the people you didn't mention was Strand Larsen doing it. We're talking about Strand Larsen who comes here.
>> Yeah.
>> Our record signing, you know, expecting to be coming in here, starting every match, playing 90 minutes, you know, >> him >> you know, potentially he's thinking he, you know, he's going to be on the pitch starting and going to be the one that gets that goal.
And JP is so well-liked that Strand Larsen hasn't really started, you know, the particularly important matches that we played recently and he's doing the celebration. That's how well-liked the guy is is that someone that he was brought in to replace um and ended up to staying here, but I don't think he was going to have that and he didn't think that was, you know, going to happen and and he is so bought into it and and likes the guy so much that he's doing the celebration after the goal. I think it really speaks volumes to just the group as a whole, what Glasner has done with the group, and just how well-liked JP is. Just a wonderful character and again, I know, you know, some of the stuff in January leave the bad taste, but again, if this is it, JP, it's been an absolute pleasure.
Um again, just been a wonderful striker for us over the last couple years.
Really happy for him getting a French call-up and I remember after that French call-up I had a little uh I had a tweet, you know, that one you know, you know, mentioning he's bullied by the French call-up, you know, he gets the winner in the Conference League final and then if he goes, you know, we thank you and he's a cult hero.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Whatever whatever happens, he's a cult hero. Um absolutely and just really enjoyed having him at the club.
Obviously, you know, the personality and the celebrations and all of it and just a generally good player. Like he's just a generally good player, which is why he's in the French World Cup side.
Um his comeback for us, you know, in terms of how it started it and how it's ended.
Like we're talking about a guy that we almost got rid of cut price uh >> Yep.
>> in January like 3 years ago And now for the past 3 or 4 years, he's, you know, a big part of the FA Cup winner and FA Cup winner. And he is an FA Cup winner.
Scores in the Community Shield. Scores in the winner of the Conference League final. Just some guy. He's going down again as a cult hero and some legacy.
And just really pleased with the guy on a on a personal level. Just And really am glad to have had him here. And again, if this was it, JP, I thought it was a a good performance. Obviously getting a goal. A bit unlucky, you know, not getting a second. But I thought his hold-up play was decent. Again, >> Yep.
>> big physical center backs in the >> great, but it was de- but it was decent.
It wasn't great.
>> It was okay. But some decent, you know, some big some physical center backs in in Sissoko and Lejeune. I thought he did well. And obviously he gets the winner.
And that's the only thing that ends up mattering, you know, in a match in a final. The The only thing that matters is the result. And he was the the difference maker. So, shout out to JP. And again, like Daichi, if this if this was it, it's been an absolute pleasure.
>> Agreed. And I would actually step it up from cult hero to legend because again, the I mentioned the double digit goals in three seasons. No one's ever done that. He's got 50 goals for Palace. I mean, actually it should be 51 now, right? No, 50 Premier League goals, sorry. So, he's got But to me, he's a legend. He'll go down as a legend in my mind. So, let's move on to the subs because you mentioned real quick, uh subs. You said I gave him a 10.
You gave him a 10. And I'm giving I'm giving him a 10 again because he came on. He didn't make that one really strange play where he kicks the ball trying to kick off the defender and it goes out for a throw-in which could have led to something. But at the end of the game, he's battling for balls. He draws the yellow card on N'Golo Mendy.
Um but um again, he comes on. And I think you know what I know you you mentioned before, I think when we signed him, I'm sure he expected to play. But not only did he push JP, which is important, he comes on a he came on starting important games when JP couldn't start because you didn't want to drive him in the ground. And he also came in a lot of matches like the final and helped us see out the game. So, although there were kind of a couple of really weird plays that he made, I thought he really worked hard. And again, the celebration after the match with Pino and and the other players, the interview with him and Wharton was hilarious on Palace TV. If you haven't seen it, check it out. But I thought he did a really good job coming in again.
That one strange clearance is the only negative, but but overall, again, great to to have him in the squad to help us win this cup. Your thoughts on Jean-Philippe Mateta.
>> A great character, and again, I really do think it speaks volumes for him. I know I talked about it on the GP part, but I really do think it speaks volumes for him as, you know, a a person.
You know, the fact that it's just it's it's real selflessness, you know, to not be jealous or, you know, let it wear on your face, you know, that you know, you're not the one out there. It seems, honestly, I know I don't want to believe at a point, but Liverpool, you know, they buy Ekitike, then they buy Isak. I don't think they're going to be able to get Isak.
And there was that very strange fit in the um beginning of the season where it it just seemed like they just didn't like each other. Like in terms of, you know, both of them think they're, you know, wanting to be the main man. Ekitike had this weird celebration. Um They didn't acknowledge Isak in that. And we didn't have to deal with that kind of thing at all. And I I think that is a really special. And in terms of, you know, Jean-Philippe Mateta's performance, like always, I thought he worked his socks off.
You mentioned that strange clearance.
That kind of did my head in, I can't lie. Um cuz I think it might have gone out for a corner, to be honest. And it just put us under some unnecessary danger. But again, I thought he worked his socks off. Uh depending, you know, how things go, it looks like he's sign Sorry. Looks like he is set to lead the line for us next season, so we'll see how that goes. Um you know, for the fee that we spent, I imagine, you know, that is obviously the plan, regardless of whoever the manager is. But again, I thought he worked his socks off. And again, I I really can't speak highly enough for, you know, his character. And I I do think another guy that really seems to love love being here, which I always enjoy. And I do think it's very important.
>> I agree. Last sub, the only other sub we used, uh Gason both get a 10. Your quick thoughts on Gason? Move on to the manager.
>> It's funny, cuz I'm watching Danjuma after the match.
You almost forget he's on loan.
>> [laughter] >> Like I like >> And you know what, before I forget this stat, before I forget this stat, he's going to he is the first player ever to score in a Europa League medal and Conference League medal in the same season cuz he had another appearances for Villa, which is mad. So he can get two medals, but go ahead. Sorry, that's mad. But go ahead.
>> Yeah. And he earned it as well. Like he scored the um >> Exactly. Earned it.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, the one against Molde starting to finish it. I thought he was very good against uh against Larnaca at points. Um Fiorentina as well. And then, you know, he got obviously got injured so he didn't play part against Donetsk and didn't play too much of a role you know, in the final. But I do think there was one bit and I remember I remember him getting the ball and I thought he was going to win a foul here.
He didn't, but he ended up keeping the ball well and part of that was was due to him. I think he got something out of it. So he didn't touch the ball much, but again, I just find it funny because again, he was also involved in the celebrations and I keep forgetting that the guy is on loan cuz he just blended into the side so seamlessly. His first match is against, you know, Brighton. He has the assist for the star goal. He's doing the the Max celebration, getting the crowd up after that match and and yeah, he just seems to fit into the side excellently and we'll see what happens with him. Again, if he doesn't come back, um you know, if he can't work out the fees or whatever it is, I imagine we'll get it done because, you know, it hasn't worked for Villa.
Hasn't worked at Villa for him, you know, and obviously Emery's going to be there. So I do imagine we'll get it done. Hopefully >> And they got yeah.
>> Yeah. So hopefully at a lower fee than what was being discussed, but I do think, you know, going forward if he is part of the squad, I do think he's going to be a very good player to have. I do think adding him brought a little bit more out of Pino, which is good, you know, just like you mentioned Streel Larsen and JP, you know, being pushed >> You need to have a second player to push.
>> Yeah. And we're playing in Europe again and Europa League is is eight group stage matches instead of six like Conference League. So we're going to need rotation, um obviously. So he'd be a good guy to have. But yeah, it's just funny just watching him take part in the celebrations stuff. Just He's just fully bought into the club, it feels like um he is like one of us.
And hoping he is back, you know, next season.
>> Yeah, and he actually I'm looking at his stats. He actually did score for Villa in the Europa League. He scored for us in Conference League. So, he earned the medals that he's going to get. We're on to the manager. I'll let you go first cuz I might uh talk a bit. No, maybe I won't, but I'm giving my manager a 10 plus and so is Xavier. I felt So, I'll let you go first. Your thoughts on how he managed this game if you want to add any other thoughts cuz this is the last time we're going to have him as our manager.
>> Yeah, I don't want to talk too much cuz I don't want to get emotional um about him. But, yeah, the guy has he's changed our lives.
Like I don't I don't know how else he's just fully changed our lives. You know, before he came in, how things were looking in terms of the malaise around the club, and it's just so funny like even like 14, 15 months ago, like if you're looking at like last March, you'd be on socials and people talking about is there any club more pointless than Palace? You know, they don't make any cup runs. They just come in 12th. Like their fans must be so bored of what's going on.
Like and there are YouTube long YouTube videos by like these big content creators and articles being written about just what literally what is the point of Palace? And then now you fast forward here and it's just living the dream of every club around our stature, you know, outside of the big six. This is like what everyone wants to be doing. They want to see their club win at Wembley. They want to see their club club go on a a European tour. And all the other stuff about this being um you know, the meaning the competition and all that, it's a nonsense. You know, people from supporters from Fulham and Brentford and Brighton, even Bournemouth, I know they qualified for for Europa League this year to be fair.
Um they're not really involved, but you know, like that type of club um they'd give like a limb to experience and see the things that we've seen over the last 13 months. Like genuinely. And it's all down to Glasner. And I know I'm making this more about him as a whole, but I just again, he just fully changed our lives and it's a I unbelievable way for him to go out.
And in terms of just the match, he got everything spot on. Like Viacom like Real could be playing now, like 3 days later, and I'm not sure they would have broken us down. And I do think of all the things with Glasner that we talked about, you know, how full you know, the quick transitions and how we can get forward and and score goals.
I don't think we talked about how good defensively we've been since he's come in. And we just have had anybody playing back there. Like we've rocked up to Anfield with a back three of like Lerma, Clyne, like occupying like two of the When we beat them 1-0 as Who Who's playing center back that day?
>> I'll look I'll look up >> Ande- I think it was Andersen. Cuz that was like his first I've seen cuz Andersen was still here. So we rocked up to Anfield and kept a clean sheet and the back the the back three was Lerma, Clyne, and and Andersen.
Um we're winning a Conference League final with a clean sheet and the back three is is Lacroix, who's obviously excellent, but then a 19-year-old to his right, and then a younger guy in Riedewald to his left who's barely played football in the last 18 months, and we're still keeping clean sheets and barely even conceding chances. So I do think I maybe something I should have looked up before, but I'm sure we'll have another, you know, whenever the announcer comes with Glasner, we'll probably have another show, but I just think how good he's been for us defensively has really gone under the radar. You mentioned 18 clean sheets for us this season in all competitions. A great record. It's basically we played 60 matches, so we're keeping a clean sheet a third of the times. Um which obviously is is excellent, but I do think how good defensively he's been is is really been understated. And I do think Wednesday was a perfect masterclass in that. It's just we let them have the ball, but just didn't do anything with it. And that's just been a feature of Glasner's tenure. Just not caring about the ball, using it well going forward, and then just being so good defensively.
And yeah, it's been it's been so special to watch all of this and and so much of it is is down to him. I am ecstatic that he decided to join us. I thought the words about him you know, feeling that he's a self-made man and now I thought those were were wonderful words and I I mean, I don't know what else to say. It's just the slide obviously after the match was was brilliant and I I I can't He's the greatest manager in our history. I find it hard to think how he will be topped in my lifetime. It'd be amazing if he was because I can only imagine the success the success that we would have had if that is the case.
>> [laughter] >> If we do have a manager that's ever better than him in my lifetime, I I I would certainly like to see it because it would mean some special things are are happening at the football club. But what a guy. Um he's he's fully changed all of our lives and I'm I'm just very thankful for him and however you whoever convinced him to come here and it's just been really just an absolute pleasure um to have him at the club and he's just been absolutely brilliant. And from the time he came in, I really enjoyed just how refreshing it was in terms of how he talked about the the the us as a whole and him coming in at a tough time and having, you know, square pegs in round holes and him talking about, you know, his job is to try and, you know, get the best out of the players that he has and not, you know, force, you know, his system and you know, trying to make all these things work. And I just remember he had a comment in February of '23 when he he mentioned that and it come right after, you know, Hodgson had just left and it was just a much different tenor of, you know, we had problems but Gaz was looking to create a solution to them where it didn't seem like, you know, under Roy that was necessarily the case and he's just been a breath of fresh air around the club and again, just a serial winner.
Now, you know, looking for a Champions League so he can match Mourinho as the only three two men the only manager in history to to do both. If he gets to a club there, you know, depending on the club, I I'd back him, to be honest.
Why wouldn't I considering what he's done for us? But yeah, I love the guy and again, I know this is is for him whereas I'm guessing, you know, with Daichi and JP. so I just want to, you know, obviously he's not going to watch this, but I'm just so thankful to the guy for everything he's done for me and you and everyone who was there on Wednesday and all the supporters, you know, the season ticket holders, everyone involved in the club, what he's done for us. Just some guy, uh and just a top manager and just generally going to miss him. I hope he knows, and I think he does, how much everyone, you know, in SE25 and Palace supporters all over the world just love him.
>> Yeah, you That was brilliant, Zaha. We really appreciate that. Um I'll I'll talk a little bit about the game. I thought he was calm and composed leading up to the final. Did a brilliant job of uh nullifying all the threats that Real had. Gave them ball first half.
Put pressure on them the second half, you know, to win that win that trophy.
Had a big decision to make with Richard.
He chose with Chadi. Chadi was brilliant. Um watered me his life easier with Encarnada cuz they were so brilliant that in that midfield. Um but um and he and then he he used the two subs he had to use. I thought he'd been on maybe Richard's, but I think it made no sense bring on an injured player possibly at 1-0, but he did the right move in um Strand Larsen. Guessan coming on and I noticed they had, you know, they had huge numbers of Richard's and all that lining up.
Listen, everyone knows how much I've been a uh advocate and a fan of Glasner.
So glad that the January window stuff went away. I'm so glad that we kept him.
I I mean, I was wrong in one way. I mentioned I'd never seen a manager announce that he's announced he's leaving and the team going to do well after. My big example was Jurgen Klopp when they left when they fell off towards the end of that title run that year. But honestly, it was tough for Parish. What What do you do? Do I stick or twist? And he stuck with Glasner. And it was the best decision he's ever made as a as an owner. It just was. To bring us three trophies in a year. Listen, started watching Palace early 1970s. My brother was a ball boy. You know all this story if you watch the shows. Um my dad was Palace supporter, so he took me there and I was very young, probably earliest he remembers taking taking me was 5 or 6 years old. Early 70s, so I've seen everything and I never thought I'd see one trophy with Palace, but we won last year.
Blessed to have gone there, blessed to have been there with some great people and my son to see that final. I was I was content.
And then August rolls around and I had tickets for the Community Shield. I was like, "Ah, I'm not going to go to that."
Gave my ticket to my nephew. We went there. I'm like, "Wow, we won two trophies." And then this Conference League decided at the last minute to go. Wasn't going to go. My son couldn't go. I'm like, "You know what? I don't want to really experience it without him." I'm like, "You know what?
I know what Palace is like. Chance of being in a European final in my life and I'm 61 now is very, very slim. I've got to go." So I made last minute plans, went, and I could not have been happier.
Thinking right at the end, only time I cried actually was on the on the plane home cuz I thought about my dad who was a big Palace fan, him not being here, and and my son not being able to be there, and how lucky I was to experience it, but it was amazing to be there. I I wasn't overly emotional there. I was happy, but I wasn't crying. I got some videos out you'll see. I was just really happy. I was so glad for Palace, so glad to have had Glasner around, so glad for the Palace fans who stuck through it, for the players, great bunch of players. I'm just blessed to have seen three trophies in the space of a little bit over a year. I never would have taken I never would have thought that would happen.
And I wish him all the luck wherever he goes. Normally when a player or or managers, I don't care about where they go. I don't care. I wish Glasner all the best because he has given me and then many others, thousands of Palace fans, the best time ever. Everyone knows this stat. If you don't know, I've been to 14 matches under Glasner as a Palace fan in person, seeing him, flown to two finals. I never saw Glasner team lose in person. I never saw us lose. We only drew like four of those games, won 10 of them. It was amazing to have him as the manager. They mentioned about best managers, he's the best manager in our history. I thought Terry Venables did a great job in the 80s, got us 70s into the 80s, got us promoted, team of the team of the century, great Malcolm Allison, 76 FA Cup semi-final, but we got relegated twice on Allison. And then there's obviously the great Stevie Coppell, who was great, finished third, said yes cup, FA Cup final, but never didn't win that big trophy. I'll give this as our fourth trophy. Said yes, does not, you know, diminish that. But listen, this is the greatest ever manager. In 2 and 1/2 years, he's been brilliant. I'm so happy to have experienced Glasner as our Palace manager.
Just couldn't be happier. I just want to say again, and I'll say you're right, he won't watch the show, Xavi, but thanks Oliver Glasner for everything you've done for Palace. I really appreciate it. Palace fans will all have appreciated what you've done, and good luck in the future. Really appreciate what you've done for us.
Thank you, thank you, and thank you.
But that's it for the player ratings.
That's the last one for the season. I want to thank everyone who's watched.
Please drop a like, subscribe.
We'll be back next season. There were 60 matches this year. I'm pretty sure I missed maybe two or three player ratings, so I've done well over 50. But thank you for tuning in all season.
Appreciate all of your kind words. If I saw you at the match, and I said hello, thanks again for saying hello to me.
Been a great season. A lot of hard work by the guys behind the scenes. Dean especially, great job by him getting this all put together. But that's it for the player ratings for Real. We are European champions. Thank you, Oliver Glasner, Steve Parish, the Palace players. But until next time, up Palace.
>> Up the Palace.
