In reality, he is referring to the Bennett family, but he does not realize that Elizabeth herself belongs to that family. After hearing this, Elizabeth understands that Mr. Darcy did not want Jane and Mr. Bingley to get married. This realization deeply affects her feelings toward him. Later, when Elizabeth and [music] Mr. Darcy meet again. The tension between them becomes even more intense, setting the stage for their next major confrontation.
