Emotional Truth vs Biblical Truth: Why Feelings Are Not the Authority

[00:00:32]Influencers, viral spirituality, and social media theology constantly reinforces this message. But the word of God warns believers to be careful not to be taken captive by ideas that drift away from Christ as revealed in the word of God. So, today we're going to talk about emotional truth in modern culture and why Christians must remain anchored in the word of God today. All right, everybody. Welcome back to the Weekly Watch, part of the Contending for the Word podcast. I'm your host, Dave Jenkins. Each week here on the Weekly Watch, we take a few moments to step back from the noise of cultural headlines and ask a more important question. What does scripture say about the ideas shaping the world around us?

[00:01:20]Well, over the past month, we've been talking about a growing authority crisis in modern culture. Personal experience is replacing the word of God. Feelings are becoming the measure of truth.

[00:01:33]Identity is increasingly defined by self-perception rather than creation.

[00:01:38]And one of the primary ways that these ideas spread today is through digital culture. Influencers, short-form videos, viral spiritual content. These voices shape how millions of people think about faith, identity, and truth. But scripture reminds believers to approach cultural ideas with discernment. Our anchor biblical text today is Colossians 2:8, where Paul warns believers not to be taken captive by human philosophies that are not rooted in Christ alone.

[00:02:10]That warning is incredibly relevant and timely for our cultural moment today.

[00:02:16]So, today we're going to take a look at several ways emotional truth is being promoted in modern culture and how Christians can remain grounded in the word of God. Now, my friend, one of the most powerful forces shaping modern thinking today about faith is what we might call influencer theology. Many people today learn about spirituality not through careful study of the word of God, but through social media personalities.

[00:02:43]These voices often speak confidently about faith, identity, and purpose.

[00:02:49]But confidence does not equal biblical authority. And when theology is shaped primarily by personalities rather than by the word of God, confusion often follows.

[00:03:00]Christians need to remember that the authority for doctrine does not come from popularity, it comes from the authority of God's word.

[00:03:09]Now, closely connected to influencer theology is something we might call viral spirituality. Short messages about spirituality spread rapidly online.

[00:03:22]Well, they often sound encouraging, but and they even I mean sound compassionate, but many of these messages redefine spiritual truth in subtle ways.

[00:03:33]You see, instead of pointing people towards repentance and reconciliation with God through Christ, they focus on self-discovery and emotional affirmation.

[00:03:43]And so, spirituality becomes something centered on personal feelings rather than divine revelation. But the Christian faith has always been grounded in the truth that God has revealed in the word of God. Now, another pattern that we see today is a growing belief that emotional experience carries authority. Statements like these are all over the place. You might hear them in some of these ways.

[00:04:11]I feel like this is right. My truth is valid. This is my spiritual journey. The assumption behind those statements is simple. Feelings determine truth, but scripture presents a very different understanding of human experience. Our feelings can be very powerful, but they are not infallible.

[00:04:30]This is why believers are repeatedly called to evaluate ideas through the lens of God's word. Now, even in some parts of the church today, these cultural ideas have also influenced how theology is presented. In certain progressive, quote-unquote, Christian circles today, emotional language is often used to reshape biblical teaching.

[00:04:53]Instead of asking what scripture clearly says, the conversation shifts towards what feels compassionate or inclusive.

[00:05:02]But compassion in the word of God is never separated from the truth of God's word. Biblical love does not ignore God's design. Instead, it calls people towards the life that God created them to live. Now, how should Christians respond to these cultural pressures? The answer begins with learning to think biblically. Christians must develop the habit of evaluating ideas through the word of God. When we hear spiritual claims, we should ask simple but important questions. Like, does this align with the word of God? Does this reflect the character of Christ? Does this promote truth or merely emotional affirmation? My friend, discernment grows as believers become more deeply rooted in the word of God. And this is so critical with all of these things that you see out in on your newsfeed on Facebook, on TikTok, on Instagram, on X, um on YouTube, or, you know, wherever you go in our world today. You need to learn to begin to evaluate all things through the lens of God's word. That's the point here. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 is so clear on this point that we are to test all things and to hold fast to what is good. And what is good, my friend?

[00:06:26]Paul tells us in Philippians 4 that that we are to think on what is good, on what is noble, what is pure, what is good.

[00:06:35]And that is only defined in the word of God alone.

[00:06:41]See, that's how we can discern the truth from error. That's how we can stand fast. That's how we will not drift.

[00:06:49]That's how we will not be swayed by, you know, Instagram Reels or Facebook Reels or TikTok Reels or YouTube short clips that are giving us these sound bites, but we need to test every single thing, whether we're hearing it preached, whether we're watching a video, listening to a podcast, reading a book.

[00:07:10]My friend, we need to test it all by the word of God alone. And that understanding then will help us to measure our emotions, measure our responses, and to regulate our emotions not by what we feel, not by what we want, but by the word of God alone. So, as we close today's Weekly Watch, I want to offer a word of encouragement.

[00:07:38]Christians living in today's cultural moment may sometimes feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of ideas and voices shaping public conversation. But please remember something important with me.

[00:07:51]God has not left his people without guidance. He has given us his word and his word is true. Scripture remains the stable foundation for understanding truth in every generation. Cultural trends may come and go. Influencers may rise and fall. But my friend, the word of the Lord remains steady and sure for every generation because it is how we know the truth. The truth is the truth and God has revealed it and we can know it only by his word. As we close today, please remember the warning in Colossians 2:8. Believers must be careful not to be taken captive by ideas that sound appealing cause them to drift away from Christ. The Christian life is not sustained by viral spirituality or influencer theology. It is sustained by the truth that God has revealed in his word. We all need this, my friend. We all need it. It doesn't matter how long you've been a Christian. So, if you're not in a sound local church, I would plead with you.

[00:09:40]You need to be reminded, as Hebrews 3:13 says, that that while today is today, you need to be reminded of your need for the grace of God. And the great place to do that is with God's people in a sound local church under biblically qualified pastors so that you can grow in God's word so that you can be encouraged so that you can share life with others and grow together in the grace of God.
