Please remain standing for the singing of our national anthem by Master Police Officer Dustin Martin Young of the Gwynette County Police Department.
Oh, say can you see by the dawn early light what so proudly we hel at the twilight last gleaming whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight.
All the rampass we watch were so gallently streaming.
And the rockets regular.
The bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star spangled ber yet away or the land of the free and of the brave.
The brave.
Thank you.
Please be seated.
Good morning.
I'm Glenn Cannon, the president of GNET Technical College. Still humbled and appreciative after 12 years now. It's my 12th graduation. Uh some people lost some money on the over and under on that, but uh glad to be here. Looking forward to many great things in the future. I'm going to go off script for just a second uh here.
Um uh missing a great member of our team today. Uh someone who for the last 10 years has been extremely important to me. And uh even though I'm a little later in years, as you can tell, there can still be people that have influence on your life. Uh Mr. Melvin Everson, our VP of government and uh business relation has had an extreme effect on my life the last 10 years.
He's had an extreme effect on this college. Um he's affectionately known as Mr. Gwynette County. Uh Melvin had a serious uh health situation uh last November. So, if you would uh think of Melvin uh today uh and we'll continue to keep him in our thoughts and our prayers uh for his recovery. Uh and um if God willing uh one day uh he rejoin us in our efforts to continuing to make Gwynette Technical College the great place that it is. So, thank you for that little personal moment there.
But good morning. On behalf of the faculty and staff at Gwynette Technical College, it's my honor and pleasure to welcome you all to the 2026 commencement ceremony. I know you are as proud graduates to attended Gwynette Tech as I am to be the president of this college with such a wellrespected and traditionrich history. You're to be commended for your determination, ambition, and perseverance.
We applaud your success and delight in celebrating with you and your supporters today. I want to extend some special recognition to some distinguished guests who are with us this morning. These individuals help advance our college's goals in a powerful way through their exceptional support uh in the community.
So when I call your name, stand, give a wave so these people can uh know who you are. We have great legislative support.
Uh I'm going to mention that a little bit uh in a minute. But uh so proud today to have two of our state representatives with us. Uh Sandy Donatuchi, Mr. Gabe Okaya. Then we have great support from our TCSG state board of directors. And representing Gwynette is Miss Lisa Winton who is with us today from our state board.
My local board of directors gives us guidance and advice on how we operate in the community and also work to spread the the good word of Gwynette Tech. And today from our uh board of directors, we've got our chair, Mr. Mark Abrams.
Board members Albert Sto and Matthew Hunt from Gwet County. We're very pleased today and thank you for being here. Uh our great chair of Gwynette County Board of Commissioner, Miss Nicole Henderson is here.
We also have a longtime Gwynette Tech supporter, former chair of the foundation and current board of commissioner member, Mr. Matthew Hulcamp.
And graduates, this next group of uh many of you are like me. If it wasn't for people that are in in uh some of these people on in our next group, you wouldn't be probably sitting there today. I know I wouldn't be. Uh these people go out, they're members of our foundation, our board of trustees.
They not only give of their time and money, they go out to businesses and the community and raise funds so that we're able to help students when they need it the most get through college. And uh today from our board of trustees uh we have Miss Kim Anker, Kelly Balkam, Michael Corgan, and Jason Ethridge.
And uh also we have the executive director with us today from the Technical College System of Georgia Foundation who just so happens to also have a granddaughter graduating today.
So Corey Thompson, Corey and I have served in many roles together uh over the years at different colleges. So good to see you, man.
Graduates, you're part of history today. You're part of the largest class in the history of GEK Technical College this spring semester.
This spring semester, you have over 12,700 fellow students, making you a student and a graduate of the largest technical college in Georgia and now one of the large 10 largest colleges and universities in the metro area in there.
Uh, a lot has happened during your two years here at the college. Uh, our growth has been exponential. We have members of our legislator here. Legislators as I mentioned here today. I want to thank the legislators at Governor Kemp for the support that we've had. While you've been here, we opened up a $37 million cyber security, gaming, computer information system building on our Lawrenceville campus. We started an 11 million renovation expansion for the number one automotive program in the southeast on our Lawrenceville campus.
And we will begin finally on our second building to increase our Alpharetta campus. A lot of things have happened while you're here. A lot more to come.
So, thank you again.
Many of you have had a lot to go through on your personal and professional journey. You've persevered. You've endured. You've met adversity head on through sheer will and self-determination.
You march forward through any barrier put in front of you. Others have pushed through the same struggles I had in college. A full-time job, a family, financial hardship, and yet here you are fulfilling your dream.
Today, you're ready to walk across this graduation stage and stake your claim to a great career with a great company. Or many of you will start your own companies. Either way, you have the key now to open up your own doors, control your own destiny. Your success, while personally earned, I think you'll agree, can also be attributed to our premier faculty and staff and their work teaching and guiding students each and every day. So, I want to take a minute and have you and those in the audience, if you will, recognize our faculty and staff, graduates. I know you are all like me here today participating in this ceremony where at least one or possibly several instructors went above and beyond to ensure your success might give you an extension of a day or two or three whatever it took in there.
You're here today because of countless GTC staff. Some of you you saw some of them you saw on a regular basis. Some you'll never meet.
They're your adviserss, the people who make sure you can register, make sure you have a transcript, a diploma. They work all hours of the week to ensure Wi-Fi and Blackboard access. Make sure you have a clean, well equipped, and safe environment to pursue your dreams.
So, if you would, I'd like for if you're here today and members of our GTC FA faculty and staff family, please stand so you can be recognized for being the ultimate reason that we're having this ceremony today.
Thank you.
So each year across all three of our platforms, Gwynette Tech welcomes over 23,000 students from adult ed, continuing education, credit education programs, students of various ages, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, and experiences.
But more importantly, each year we have the tremendous pleasure of celebrating the accomplishments of our graduates.
This is certainly a momentous occasion in the lives of our students, their families, our faculty, our staff, our administrators.
Graduates, no matter your future path, our further educational journey, never forget the college and the people who made it possible. You are now part of the Gwynette Tech family, a part of the tapestry of lives that make up this great college. Please stay in touch.
Join our alumni association. And when you have that personal accomplishment or you see other GTC alumni succeed, remember your experiences. Take time to think. That's my college. That's my family. Always stay GTC Griffin proud.
Thank you.
Good morning everyone.
Today it's my honor to welcome a commencement speaker who represents the very best of Gwynette Technical College.
Tracy Duck is an educator whose influence extends far beyond the classroom.
She has earned the distinction of being Gwynette Tech's 2026 instructor of the year, not just through her expertise as a psychology instructor, but through a deep commitment to students.
Tracy doesn't just teach psychology.
She challenges students to think critically, deepens their self-awareness, questions their assumptions about human behavior, and supports them generously so they can flourish as learners and as human beings.
Tracy Duck truly cares about students and helping them succeed in the classroom. She models respect, integrity, perseverance, and other values that have a positive impact on our community and Georgia's workforce.
It is this lasting impact on minds, on lives, on futures that makes today's honor so welld deserved.
Please join me in celebrating an extraordinary teacher and leader as we welcome our commencement speaker.
Good morning. Thank you. It is truly a privilege to stand here today. I want to thank our vice president, Rebecca Alexander, and our president, Dr. Canon for this honor and for their unwavering support of our students, faculty, and our staff.
My journey to teaching at Gwynette Tech actually began with a very small class made up of my four most favorite students ever, my own children. Before they were even born, I knew that homeschooling was the right choice for our family.
They are all 20some adults now. But during those homeschooling years, I was asked two questions frequently.
The first was, "How in the world do you do it? I would go crazy."
Well, I didn't go crazy. And my answer is one that will resonate with many of you graduating today.
When something is important to you, you make it happen.
Even when it's hard, even when it requires sacrifice, even when there are days you might want to quit, you keep going because the choice you made truly matters.
The second question I was often asked was why? Why homeschool?
My short answer was that I wanted my kids to love learning, but honestly, it was much more than that.
Homeschooling wasn't just about learning math and history or getting all the answers right. It was about shaping people, people of character, curiosity, and joy.
It was about building relationships with each other, making good memories, and appreciating the simple moments of everyday life.
One of our favorite family traditions has been an annual fall camping trip to the mountains. Those Saturday nights in the Smokies always mean homemade chili cooked up in a cast iron skillet.
There are very few dining experiences I've had that can compare to the joy of sitting with my family around a campfire eating Frito pie out of paper bowls.
Some of life's simplest and sweetest moments have happened right there.
Now, that might not sound like a serious education, but it was because education at its core is relational.
It's built on shared experiences and meaningful conversations.
It's about people investing in one another, whether that's around a campfire or in a classroom at Gwynet Tech.
There is a proverb that says, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
Graduates, you have been sharpened not just through lectures and exams, but through relationships with faculty and staff who are deeply invested in your success.
While we worked hard to ensure you gained the technical knowledge and skills required for your chosen fields, we also hoped your time here would shape you in ways that will never appear on your official transcript.
As faculty, we held high expectations.
We asked you to produce excellent work, to do it honestly, and to submit it on time.
We required professional, respectful communication.
Those expectations were not meant to make your life difficult, but rather to set standards for the kind of people we want to send into our community and into the workforce.
We also encouraged you to think critically.
In a world overflowing with information and opinions, critical thinking matters.
Knowing what you believe and why matters.
At the same time, we hope you leave here able to listen well and engage respectfully.
Learn to participate thoughtfully in conversations even where there may be disagreement.
Firm convictions and open minds are not opposites. Each makes the other stronger. That is iron sharpening iron.
But know this also, it's not one-sided.
You have sharpened us as well.
When you ask good questions, when you challenge our assumptions, when you push back, yes, it can be exasperating, but it's good. You keep us engaged, curious, and committed to lifelong learning.
But like you, we also face challenges that others may not always know about.
Even when we are busy slaying our own dragons, Winnette Technical College has been a community that shows up for one another when it matters the most.
I can personally attest that these are good people. This is a good place. And as students now graduates of Gwynette Tech, you are part of this community, too. Some of you may not have planned to begin your college journey here, but I hope you leave knowing that you were valued, that your instructors genuinely cared and continue to care about you, and that this institution helped shape who you are becoming.
As I close, hear this from someone who speaks to you both as an educator and as a mother of college students. I have seen your hard work.
I know the sacrifices you made. I know there were moments when quitting probably felt easier, but you persevered.
You kept going and you finished what you set out to do.
We are so proud of you.
Graduates, my hope and my prayer for you is this.
That you stand firm in what you believe.
Stay open to learning, act with integrity, and don't rush past the moments that matter most. And I hope you will always be grateful for the role Gwynette Technical College played in shaping your story. Carry forward what you have learned here into your homes, your workplaces, and your communities. Keep sharpening one another.
Class of 2026, congratulations. You did it.
Today we recognize those candidates who have successfully completed the requirements for their respective academic awards.
So now is the time candidates, you have worked hard and achieved this goal. It is now time for you to come forward to receive your awards.

Kyle Baker, Diamond Rhodess, Emily Cabanas, Deacon Phillips, Gel Garcia Viegas, Will the candidates please rise?
Will the faculty and staff please rise?
Today I confidently and proudly present to you these candidates who have successfully completed all the necessary requirements for their respective academic awards. With the recommendation of the faculty and staff and by the power vested in me by the state of Georgia and the technical college system of Georgia, I confer upon each of you the appropriate academic award with all the privileges and responsibilities pertaining there too. Congratulations.
And now we come to the timehonored tradition of the turning of the tassel.
And I started this under my tenure and I I uh hope it uh continues on. But uh I relinquish the podium now and give the honor of this uh to a student every year because I think that's most appropriate.
So this year if you'll join me for the tradition turning of the tassel tassel, you'll be led by one of your fellow graduates, Rachel Alexander, our 2026 outstanding student.
Graduates, we now come to the timehonored tradition of the turning of the tassel. The turning of tassels symbolizes the exact moment you cross over from student to graduate. Hold on so you can do it as a group, but you will turn your tassel from the right side of your mortar board to the left.
Are you ready?
Please turn your tassels. You are now GTC graduates.
It is my pleasure and honor to present the Gwynette Technical College class of 2026.
I want to thank all of the graduates and guests. I hope it's an occasion you'll always remember. And as the leadership and faculty lead the graduates out, this will conclude our ceremony. If you're able, please stand and remain standing at your seats until all the graduates have left the arena arena. Graduates, you'll join your family and friends outside the arena immediately following the recessional. On behalf of Gwynette Technical College, thanks for being a part of our family. And I extend to you our final congratulations to each of you.
God bless you. God bless Gwynette Tech.
God bless America. Thank you.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.

Heat. Heat.
Hey, hey, hey.
Hey, hey, hey.
