Ben's Chili Bowl, founded by Ben and Virginia Ali in 1958 on U Street in Washington D.C., became a historic community institution that served as a sanctuary during the 1968 riots, being the only restaurant police allowed to remain open past curfew while serving activists, police, and firefighters; the restaurant continues to operate today, demonstrating how local businesses can serve as pillars of community resilience and unity during times of social unrest.

The Untold Story of Ben's Chili Bowl Unveiled #FoodHistory #Ben'sChiliBowlAjouté :
In 1958, Ben and Virginia Ali opened Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street, Black Broadway. MLK had an office one block away and stopped in whenever he was in DC. When King was assassinated in 1968 and Washington erupted in riots, Ben's was the only restaurant police allowed to stay open past curfew. They fed activists, police officers, and firefighters. The entire block burned around them. Ben's never closed. It's still open today. Comment yes if you knew. Comment no if they buried this.
