Jameson elegantly validates the neurobiological basis of intuition, framing "gut feelings" as sophisticated pattern recognition rather than mystical guesswork. It offers a grounded perspective on how our evolutionary heritage continues to serve as a vital, pre-conscious navigation system.

The Ancient Instinct That Flags People InstantlyAdded:
Something that's happening a lot in the world these days is happening on an individual level. And people are spending whole weeks sometimes feeling as though they're reacting to something, but they can't quite put their finger on what it is that they're reacting to, why they have this emotional feeling that something is off.
If this is something that's happening to you, it's very likely that you're not imagining it and you're not overreacting about it either. And you are definitely not the only person who's feeling it right now. It's very prevalent and it's a pattern that sits underneath the feeling that's important. Once you see that, you stop blaming yourself for, you know, just having a bad day or being one of your moods, and instead you start understanding what's actually shaping your reactions because it's a very natural thing. Let's talk about it.
>> [music] >> Welcome back, wanderers. It's Ellie again. Your brain actually learns how to read patterns long before it learns how to think about anything.
Have you noticed, for example, how a newborn baby responds to the tone of someone's voice long before they actually understand the words that are being spoken to them? And have you also noticed how sometimes when you enter into a room, you can kind of feel a vibe about it, like the energy is shifting around you in a certain way, long before you can really explain it with words or even know what's going on in the room?
And have you also noticed how you can have a really clear idea in your mind, but as soon as you try and put it into words, the explanation gets really clumsy and awkward and cumbersome and it just doesn't come out okay? Yeah, I know this has happened to everybody. I know it definitely happens to me sometimes as soon as the camera comes on. Those three things, they're all examples of how our brains are building a quiet internal map of what's normal and what normal feels like. That is pattern recognition. And when something doesn't sit right inside the map of what's normal, it sets off alarm bells. It's like our whole system starts to light up. You might feel a sudden need to stay and feel really alert about your surroundings. You might feel a shift in your stomach in some way. Like, you know, like something's not quite right. Or you might get a sense that something in the room is out of place. Even though you can't figure out what it is, something just doesn't seem right around you. Those sensations are all pattern sensitivities.
It's your inner compass that's telling you that something isn't matching up to how it's meant to be. It isn't matching up with normal. A little bit like that glitchy deja vu cat that appears in the Matrix movie. I love that cat, and that's one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies because it's really relevant to so many things that we're seeing right now. None of those things are signs of paranoia. It's the intuitive sense of recognizing patterns in a natural very ancient method of protection. If you've been feeling really overstimulated or suspicious of other people's motives, or you have this really weird alertness at the moment and you can't figure out why, or like you're bracing for something that you can't even identify yet. It's because your internal system is trying to protect you. And that should actually make you feel very empowered because it means that your pattern recognition system is working. It's accurately signaling that there's a mismatch around you. Your brain is matching the moment to every similar moment that you've ever lived before in your experience of life.
So, when you react strongly to something, you aren't reacting to that actual moment. You're reacting to the pattern that sits behind the moment.
That's why the feeling can be so intense. So, here's how you can use this natural intuitive skill to protect yourself. Firstly, the moment you understand that you're looking at a pattern and that the pattern exists, you no longer have to take it personally.
You never have to start asking yourselves those questions about you and whether you're operating correctly. You know, things like, "Why am I behaving like this? Or why am I this kind of person? Or why can't I just relax? Or why does everything keep happening to me?" You don't have to ask yourself those questions because you can now see it for what it really is. It's something that you've seen before, a pattern that you already know, and that awareness gives you choices. Pattern awareness is simply preparing you for whatever might happen next, just like the early warning signal of a new car, you know?
When that early warning signal of beep beep beep takes place as you reverse out of the driveway, it doesn't mean you're going to hit something like a wall or anything. All it's doing is it's telling you that there is something behind you and to be aware of it. That is pattern recognition, exactly the same way as your nervous system and intuition instructs you that there's something around you to be aware of. So, if you have been feeling a little bit off, that's your system protecting you. If you're noticing something that doesn't fit, but you can't quite put your finger on it, that's your system trying to keep you safe. And once you realize that what you're doing is recognizing patterns, like that newborn who understands tone before words, or like that moment when you walk into a room and feel the vibe instantly, and also like that thought that's really clear in your head until you try and put it into words. You've just recognized the pattern that you're inside right now, and that lets you orient yourself instead of feeling overwhelmed by that moment. And then of course, you can step out of that pattern because now you're aware. It's a way of getting into the know really early, which is a very big advantage in any kind of situation, but particularly today in this modern world. Welcome to the new world.
