On June 30th, 2026, in Shenzhen, this Chinese robotics company didn't just unveil a lifelike humanoid. They unveiled a business model I think most people haven't [music] fully clocked yet. Stick around because the pricing alone tells you exactly who they're targeting first. And by the end of this, you'll understand why 13,000 people already put money down on one. Read that again because the important word is mass-produced. Plenty of companies have shown off a lifelike robot in a lab. What UBTECH is claiming is they built an assembly line for it, and they [music] want it in your living room, not on a factory floor. That's the real shift. UBTECH isn't a no-name startup, either. Their industrial robot, >> [music] >> the Walker S2, is already working warehouse and factory floors. And in 2025, the company ranked first in the world for revenue and sales of full-size humanoid robots. These are people who actually ship hardware. But this launch, themed endless love, was aimed squarely at your home. Companionship, elder care, emotional support. Robots as a companion, not as labor. CEO James Zhou laid out a three-stage vision on stage.
Stage one, robots handle the dangerous and boring jobs.

Under the skin, 88° of freedom, plus a proprietary dual pivot biomimetic cervical spine. Basically, a neck that moves like a real one. Three tiers, light, a semi torso version, pro, full body, ultra, the flagship with the smoothest movement and deepest customization. But here's where it stops being a fancy mannequin. Speech-to-lip sync latency is under 20 milliseconds, so the mouth actually matches [music] the words in real time. And then there's the piece I keep turning over, the agent memory OS, persistent long-term memory. This robot remembers you, past conversations [music] built on day after day, no reset.
Proactive, context-aware, designed to know you over months and years. That memory layer, more than the face, is the actual breakthrough here. So, what does a humanoid companion cost in 2026? Light starts around 119, 800 RMB, roughly 16,500 to 18,000 dollars US. D, Pro sits around 169,800 RMB. The flagship Ultra is where it gets eye-watering. The male version runs 990,000 RMB, the female version 880,000.
Well over 100,000 dollars. You can lock in a pre-order with a 3,000 RMB deposit, and sales are strictly limited to adults 18 and over. Xu [music] defended the pricing bluntly. If a machine can do your chores, keep you company, and look good doing [music] it, 100 to 200,000 yuan isn't crazy, and the demand backs him up. Pre-orders blew past 13,000 units almost immediately. UBTECH's stated goal is to scale to 50,000 units a year. One caveat worth flagging, battery life right now is only about two to four hours, so this isn't all-day companion territory yet. They've openly talked about customizable human replicas, using 3D facial reconstruction and voice [music] print-based identity replication, the robot can be built to look and sound like a specific real person. They've tied this directly to a donation program. UBTECH cites more than 19 million adults living alone in China, and roughly 118 million empty nest seniors alongside data on the mental health toll of that isolation. In 2026, they're pledging 100 customized U1 units to vulnerable [music] groups.
Elderly people living alone, kids growing up apart from a parent, families in hard situations. Built with facial reconstruction and voice cloning to recreate a specific person for emotional support. I genuinely don't know how I feel about that and I don't think you're supposed to either. If [music] a grieving grandparent gets real comfort from it, who am I to gatekeep that? But we're talking about rebuilding a dead person's face and voice and the release says almost nothing about consent from the person being copied. That's a heavy door to walk through. UBTECH does say they use a three-layer privacy setup, local first processing, minimal cloud, user-controlled hardware safeguards.
Which is the right instinct, at least on paper. And the market they're chasing is enormous. Their branch chief expects this category to go from tens of billions of RMB to a trillion RMB market by 2036.
So, where do I land? Genuinely impressed and I don't say that lightly. Those are real questions and we should keep asking them out loud. I'd rather be paying close attention as this arrives then pretending [music] it isn't coming, because it very clearly is. And if a lonely person somewhere feels a little less alone because of it, honestly, that's not nothing.
