Super Cruise delivers a remarkably stable hands-free experience by prioritizing infrastructure-heavy mapping over pure AI guesswork. It is a pragmatic win for safety, even if it feels more like a high-tech rail system than a truly autonomous leap.

Test-driving the GM Super Cruise hands-free drivingAñadido:
If you're into cars and high-tech innovation, you're going to love our segments with this morning this morning with our partners at General Motors.
GM's Supercruise is now available across Canada, meaning you can drive hands-free from coast to coast.
>> have driven more than 1.6 billion kilometers with Supercruise, and our colleague Mona Mahmoud from Your Morning Vancouver hopped in the passenger seat while our friend and tech contributor Mark Saltzman got behind the wheel.
>> Well, we are on the move this morning with GM Canada. We are currently test driving their Chevrolet Traverse with tech expert Mark Saltzman, and we're doing that this morning in honor of their Supercruise feature launching now across Canada. So, it will take you literally coast to coast, and this morning we are on a road trip out onto the Sea to Sky. Now, Mark, what makes Supercruise so great? What is it?
>> Yeah, thanks, Mona. So, Supercruise is General Motors' hands-free driving assistance technology. So, as the name suggests, it will take you where you're going, and when you arrive at your destination, you feel super refreshed and not stressed. Think of it, if you will, as the evolution of cruise control, but instead of just managing your speed, it will keep you in your lane, it'll steer for you, it'll accelerate and decelerate, and even change lanes for you.
>> Now, Mark, it's important to note, although we're on Highway 1 right now, we're not yet using Supercruise. So, how do you know what routes across Canada are Supercruise enabled?
>> Right. So, the great thing about Supercruise is that it's already available now on 23 different GM vehicles across the board, so Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. And that's both gas-based vehicles and EVs. So, your vehicle may already support it, by the way. Uh so, to answer your question, though, you would simply go to onstar.ca, and you can see maps of all the supported roadways. And there's a lot, almost a million kilometers of mapped roads across Canada and in the US. And now coast to coast as well in Canada. So you can literally drive from the west coast to the east coast with much of that handled by Super Cruise.
So, you know, hands off the wheel, you're going to feel great when you get to your destination.
>> All right. Well, lots of bucket list road trips coming a lot of Canadians way now that Super Cruise is available across the country. Coming up next hour, we're actually going to try out Super Cruise right here on camera on the road with Mark. So stick around for that.
In our last hour, we learned about how our partners at General Motors are changing the driving landscape with their Super Cruise hands-free driving technology.
>> Mhm. And now we'll check in again with our Vancouver Your Morning colleague Mona Mahmoud and tech contributor Mark Saltzman.
>> All right. Well, we are here on the road again with tech expert Mark Saltzman talking all about Super Cruise, which is now enabling Canadians to drive right across the country coast to coast using this hands-free technology, which is super innovative. So, Mark, tell us how does it work?
>> Sure, Mona. So, Super Cruise works through a collection of cameras and sensors on the vehicle, GPS data and mapping software, all working in conjunction with one another another to keep you safe on the road hands-free.
And as you mentioned, it's super exciting that it's now available coast to coast across Canada. And get this, almost a million kilometers of map roads are supported in both Canada and in the US for Super Cruise to date.
>> Pretty incredible.
>> that's like circling the earth 25 times, by the way.
>> That's incredible. So, right now we're on Highway 1, which actually would connect us right across Canada. So, show us how it works.
>> Yeah, it's super easy, Mona. You simply press the Super Cruise button to the left of the steering wheel, as you can see. The bar illuminates in green at the top, which confirms you can now take your hands off the wheel and it will do all the driving for you. It's that easy.
>> It's amazing, right? It It sounds like science fiction, but it works today on 23 different vehicles, mind you, across the uh GM portfolio. So, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, and Buick on both gas-based vehicles and EVs. So, you may notice, Mona, that there's a small camera on the steering wheel column that's looking at me. And if it detects that my eyes are not on the road, then it's going to notify me, "Hey, you know, you you better pay attention. You're going to see flashing lights, hear a noise, and even your seat will vibrate."
Tactile feedback. For some reason, if you don't reply, then what it'll do is safely pull off into the shoulder, come to a complete stop, put on the hazards, like the emergency blinkers, and contact OnStar to see if you're okay. So, it's pretty amazing technology.
>> So, let's say we're in Atlantic Canada.
How would we find out what routes we can use?
>> Yeah, so Super Cruise is fully enabled across compatible highways and and other roadways in the Atlantic provinces. And that's PEI, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland. So, yeah, again, you're going to know if it's enabled either via onstar.ca with full mapping there, or you look at the screen that we've got here.
>> Excellent. Okay, well, coming up next hour, we're actually going to talk about the Canadian innovation that's gone into Super Cruise. So, stick around for that.
Thanks, Mark.
>> Thanks for having me, Mona.
>> Well, all morning we have been discovering Super Cruise. That's GM Canada's latest innovative technology that allows Canadians to actually travel right across the country using hands-free technology. We've been doing that this morning with tech expert Mark Saltzman. Good morning to you.
>> Yeah, thanks, Mona. Great to be with you.
>> Thanks so much for having me. So, Mark, remind us again what Super Cruise is.
>> Super Cruise is General Motors hands-free driving assistance technology. So, hands-free off, you know, off the wheel, but getting to your destination. So, when you get there, you feel super refreshed and not stressed.
>> Pretty cool. Okay, so, I hear that there's a lot of Canadian innovation behind this technology. Tell us about the Canadian connection.
>> I love this. So, much of Super Cruise was developed and tested at the Canadian Technical Center. GMCTC employs over a thousand engineers and they've been working on technologies like Super Cruise and other things that are deployed globally by the way, not just for use in Canada, but with Super Cruise, great for Canadian weather, our inclement climate in in many places. So, it's made for Canada and this is amazing. Since Super Cruise started, more than 1.6 billion kilometers of roadways have been driven so far across Canada and in the US with with this technology. So, works like a charm.
>> Okay, I love that. Now, what makes it different from other hands-free technology that's out there?
>> Yeah, so Super Cruise is the only hands-free driving assistance technology that supports trailering. So, if you haul, you know, you've got a camper or a trailer or you've got gear like gravel to a work site, it works flawlessly. So, it accounts for the extra weight at the back and the extra, of course, length and and even height and keeping you in your lane, again, doing just, you know, doing its thing so you can, you know, reach your destination safely with the the vehicle doing all the heavy lifting.
>> I love it. Now, that's smart tech for you. I love that.
>> All right. Well, Mark, thanks so much for your time with us this morning. If you want to find out more about Super Cruise and the routes and the roads that you can take all across Canada this summer, you can head online to the website you see on your screen and happy cruising.
