In large-scale construction projects, small maintenance tasks and forgotten corners must be addressed regularly, as neglecting them can accumulate over time and potentially undo the progress of the entire build; this principle applies to both physical construction and broader life projects where consistent attention to small details prevents larger setbacks.

Days Like This Shape Our Entire Build…Added:
5 years ago, this was just an abandoned farm in the hills of Portugal. Now, it's something much bigger than we ever planned. But here's what no one tells you about building a place like this.
It's not just about the house. And we keep having our attention diverted, if you will.
>> It's also the small projects, one after the next, that slowly shape everything around it. Because while we've been focused on building something incredible, everything else has been growing, shifting, demanding attention.
And if we ignore it for too long, >> doesn't just slow the build down, it can undo it completely.
So today, this is what holds it all together. Because if we get this wrong, yikes. Okay.
>> Everything we've worked for over the last 5 years starts to slip because this is a monumental legacy. And right now we're edging uncomfortably close to that point. Good morning you lovely bunch and welcome back. Thank you so much for joining us. I think we got a bit of a different day for you today. There's all sorts of stuff going on. John and I have got a couple of projects that we want to crack on with ourselves which were things that were supposed to happen in the last week but haven't yet happened because other things have happened.
There's a bit of fixing going on.
There's also a little bit of future planning which is very very exciting.
big decisions that need to be made and also problems that need to be solved.
So, let's see how the day plays out. I don't really know what to expect except big things will happen. I'm sure they always do. This is what our lovely wall is looking like, which the guys have been working on in the last episode that you guys watched. So, we've kind of tidied that up really nicely. Um Marcus has washed down all the rocks this morning and he's just putting a little bit of cement in between all of the stones.
um and putting in those smaller stones just to secure it all. As you can see, we've decided to leave the plaster on that one. And there we've got a bit of a ledge and that's because those are those old beautiful reclaimed stones. We have managed to use that entire pile of reclaimed stones to build this wall.
Where are you off to?
>> All right, so we've got these olive trees that we moved a couple of years ago and they've done really well. I'm chuffed. This year is going to be the year. Who remembers when we moved these trees onto our farm?
>> Some of those memories definitely one day in the future will be more special and more cherished than others. And I'm fairly confident that this be one of those videos that, you know, when we're a bit older, maybe the kids are a bit older and we talk about the trees um and how they've been on the farm since the boys were young, might be a story that we want to revisit a few times again.
Gosh, guys, re-watching that full video filled me with so much nostalgia. And if you missed the episode, I'll pop a link to it on the screen for you now. But to catch you up really quickly, these four olive trees were choked with brambles and forgotten in a nearby forest. So, we gathered with our neighbors and our friend Mario with his digger to rescue them and give them a new life in the sunshine on our farm. No more brambles, lots of water, loads of luck.
>> This will be their third summer here.
And after a little TLC, we're really hoping that they're going to continue to thrive. They've got baby olives on it.
>> They have. Exactly. That's what I'm saying. I mean, we just ripped them out of the ground and hoped that they would grow.
Okay. Looks a bit happier.
>> So many of you guys have commented on how beautiful this olive tree is looking, and it is looking magnificent this year. It's really, really got its crown going. We do need to give it a bit of a prune as well. So maybe that we can put on the agenda for today. It's just this kind of thing. We need to um get rid of all of these because you don't want the tree putting too much energy into growing branches from out of its trunk.
>> There we go.
>> That does look much better, love. Good work.
>> Looks a lot happier, eh? Yeah, this olive tree as well when we first got here was an absolute state. We gave it a very hard prune four years ago and now look at it and loads and loads. I think we're going to have an epic crop of olives this year, love.
>> I hope so. That would be great, would you?
>> Look how many they are.
>> Mom, that's my olive tree.
>> All right, next one.
>> Look. And these are our little baby olive trees that we bought years ago from Deer Plant. Look at that.
>> Yeah, you remember that was the start of a really big journey for us.
>> It was, wasn't it?
So, we did think, guys, also would like to hear your opinions. We did think we could put four olive trees along that wall and then have like a circle of olives that welcome you in with the big olive in the middle. Olaf, now that I'm looking at it, that would be kind of cool. Might be hard to see the vision.
What with building site? Anyway, olive trees or cherry trees? What would you do?
>> Cherries.
>> Ready, mom?
>> Right. What are we doing up here?
>> Ready?
>> As ready as I'll ever be.
>> That one. Okay. This one doesn't look very happy.
>> Let's have a look at that branch.
I think there's a lot of life in those branches there. So, >> okay, >> we'll just tidy them up, I think.
>> See, that's dead up the top here. Yeah, you can see it just looks like complete deadwood. That's why I say that one's a bit funny for me cuz I don't understand how it's going to recover. It just looks like a big lump of dead wood.
>> Let's just see. Okay, so these branches up here, they're not doing well. It might be that it just grows from out here. I wonder whether we should get the chainsaw out and just have a look and see.
>> Take it off.
>> It's getting late in the season to be messing around too heavily with any of the trees. So, just not keen on doing that. I would like to take that branch off and have a look at it, though. Um, and that one of course at no point since we moved it has it done anything other than just look sorry for itself. So >> just I think it's just very definitely dead now.
>> While John's doing that, let me give you guys a very quick update on how some of the other trees that we moved are doing.
Um, if you've been with us a while, you'll know that we have done a lot of moving and shaking with trees. So, you know, things like that cherry tree coming down and us replacing it. We've always tried to save whatever we can. I think I did see a com comment of somebody asking, "Couldn't you replant that cherry tree somewhere else?" It was just too big. There's no ways that that was going to survive a move. But let me show you what has survived the move.
This plum tree is the plum tree that used to be down in front of the viewpoint in front of the house. Um, it was where Crusoe picked his first plums when we first came to Portugal and it is very happy in its new location. I don't think we're going to get many plums this year, but there are some, which is very, very exciting. So, that has done really well, and we're very, very happy to see it thriving so much. And the other tree that we did a big move on was an orange tree, which was behind our old house, which we demolished that stood over there. That orange tree gives the very best oranges I've ever tasted, and we were desperate that it didn't get lost in the move. I'm very pleased to report that it's doing really, really well.
It's just down here on the edge of the lawn. Very, very happy.
It has had loads of blossoms this year, so we can expect a nice crop of oranges from it. It's been a massive success, all of the tree moving, and I'm really, really pleased about it, and hopefully we can welcome a few more trees into our world later today.
Right, John's all done. And those trees look so much better. It's amazing what just a tiny bit of care sometimes can do. Makes all the difference, doesn't it?
>> What you up to? No. Is it baby?
>> It's not the OG baby tiger, though, is it?
OG baby digger had wire in his thing.
>> Is it?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
Um All right. Next job. We got so many little jobs to do. I've just It's kind of one of those days where there's a lot on the cards and we just want to get through as much of it as possible in a day so that we can move on to the the big stuff.
Do you want to go and get the the new box?
>> Oh, yeah. Cool.
>> We can test that.
>> Mhm.
cuz I got to drill some holes.
Okay, next job. It's just a quick job.
Well, it was supposed to be just a quick job. You guys know how it always works out. You're you're like, "Yeah, it's just going to take a few minutes." And then what actually takes a really long time, especially if you haven't been in your garage for a few months, same like me, can't find anything. You know, you're looking, you're looking, you're looking, just can't find it. So, >> this might be a quick job, love.
>> I I really hope so. when we started building this barbecue area, we took out the tap that used to be somewhere over here that's connected to the off-grid water system. Um, and so if I want to water the flower borders, and it's getting to that time of year, I can't do that with off-grid water down here. So, we just reconnect it. And I think the pipe somewhere in the ground about here.
So the plan is just to very very quickly I don't want to spend more than a few moments doing this is to reconnect the off-grid water down here so we can water the flowers cuz like I say it is really that time of year now.
Okay, there we go. That's a nice tap. We all know that I hate plumbing, but the more that I do it actually, the easier it gets. So, it gets to that place where it's like, "Okay, fine. Just go and do put a tap on." We need the tap. Okay.
This is when it gets wet and mucky. So, I'm going to cut that now.
>> Is the water off? No.
>> No.
It's not off.
>> Needs to be off. Otherwise, we're going to get really wet.
But you're lucky I'm here, love.
>> Yeah.
>> Right. I'm going to turn off the water and get my steps in today.
>> Well done.
>> What's the next project?
>> Um, >> I got to take the gate.
>> Huh?
>> I got to take the gates off.
>> Well, I was going to say it was a big You had a big one on your agenda this morning.
>> I got it all at the moment.
>> That's it. Well, there's a nice sprinkler. While we're waiting for that water to sort itself out, big thank you to today's sponsor, DJI.
Delighted with this little thing. This is the DJI Power 1000 Mini. And it's extremely handy for jobs just like this one. Couple of things on this lightweight box that I really like the look of that I've never seen on other boxes before. This one here particularly handy. Don't know how many times I've needed to charge up my telephone or charge up something that's got a USBC connector on it but had the box but no cable. Well, DJI have really thought about that and they've got a nice uh nice very high powered cable here. It means you can charge super quickly.
Maximum 100 W on that. Love that little touch. Folds away nicely in the top there. We've also got connections for solar panels, connections to charge it from your mains as well. super fast charging. And of course, as you'd expect, your USB, your USBC, and your AC charging points as well. If you're in the United States of America or the UK, of course, you'll get different plug connections. It's also, as you'd expect, got a fancy light on the front as well.
This badger here packs 1 kilowatt hour in such a small space. Plug it into your wall and it's going to charge to 80% in just 58 minutes. So, if you're interested in checking out the DJI 1000 Mini, click on the link in the description below. Go and have a look around. You never know, you might just find something you like the look of plumbing.
There we go.
Come on. Come on, man. Frustrating.
Come on. Do you want to go and turn the water back on?
No, there is a leak.
>> That looks like a riot, love.
>> I'm Yeah, I'm recycling all pieces. So, I thought I checked them all.
That is frustrating. Getting off. Should have checked properly.
Thing >> was never going to be quick job.
>> Is this a moment of truth?
>> Okay, I think we're good. Cue the tense music.
>> We good.
>> Yeah, it looks good.
>> Well done, though.
Okay, before we carry on, let's go and check see how Marcus is getting that one. Daniel's on another >> in another sill, which is great.
>> Oh, love.
>> Should we talk about what today holds in store in here?
>> Yeah. Kitchens.
>> What time are they coming?
>> I don't know yet.
There we go. Wow. Marcus has done that very quickly.
>> Bloom and heck, he really has.
>> Oh, it looks beautiful. Love, >> that's a great war. Beautiful. Well done, Marcus Muto.
>> Right, chaps. One of the biggest things that could be happening today, I say could be because I kind of thought they'd be here by now and they're not.
But something that we have understood is scheduled for today is that the plumbing company, the company that's doing all of our ventilation, our underlo heating, and all of our plumbing. And I think our electrics, correct?
>> I think so. Yeah.
>> Are supposed to be coming in today to measure up. What it does mean is that John and I have to think very carefully about the kitchen. And they wanted us to have the kitchen designed by today. Come and have a look because we've got a vague idea. It's a fairly simple kitchen design in that it's just going to have a long bank of cabinets along here and then a big wall of cabinets and ovens and things over there. And then we're going to put an island. Now the question is, I suppose, where does the sink go?
So the first thing >> and the dishwasher, they say over here.
>> The countertop's going to be like this all the way along.
>> So what we need to do right now, though, is decide where the sink's going. Is that Is that what we have to decide before these guys arrive? Yeah, cuz they want to measure everything up. I Yeah, >> tricky.
>> Yeah, we're going to have a four bank here. Two ovens, microwave, coffee machine stuck in the wall. Then there's going to be cupboards, pantries, big long countertop right here.
>> Where's the stove?
>> Cooker. Yeah. Well, I'd put it in the island. I'm not sure that the island can be as grand as we originally imagined.
>> Okay, so we have an island here and then all this space. Do we put a little like breakfast nook that sits and has breakfast overlooking the >> I was thinking I was thinking around about here we could do the beer fridge.
>> Yeah, sure.
>> There's something very sociable about putting a sofa or a cozy chair in a kitchen >> 100%.
>> So it might be a nice spot for a cozy chair in this corner in front of the window. A sink in the middle right here.
>> No, no sink on the edge. It's fine. I've been convinced. You know, it feels more Think about the journeys through. The other thing we don't want to do is make that island get in the way of of the the ovens.
>> But darling, actually that I can see it now.
>> I I know we're waffling a little bit at the moment, but anyway, so we we sent off a few inquiries. This is such a Portuguese thing. Um, we sent off a few inquiries yesterday and we got automated email replies back that um that said, um, thanks very much for your inquiry.
We really appreciate it. We'll get back to you within 24 to 48 hours. If that was the UK and you sent that inquiry off in the UK, somebody would be on the phone immediately trying to sell you a kitchen. In Portugal, they're just like, nah, you know, we'll get back to you whenever we've got time.
>> When we got time. Um, a few people have asked if John is going to build this kitchen, and you might, but we're going to explore our options for now and see >> what we can come up with.
>> Yeah, we are. Yeah.
>> Um, I really want this to feel like a rustic farmhouse kitchen. And one of the things that I saw which was beautiful is those traditional um, Portuguese tiles, the ones with the blue paint on them where they used to paint big murals um, behind as a splashback. And I say to John, "What if we tiled that wall with ase blue tiles, but if we could find an artist who could paint the story of the farm for us >> in a tiled um backsplash, wouldn't that be so special?" Because this is a monumental legacy that we've created here for our family, not just for our kids, but hopefully for their kids and for lots of generations to come. So, we really want to get it right and we want to make it as absolutely incredible as we possibly can.
darling. These chickens know it's snack time. They've literally like heard you making a sandwich. Look at them.
They've got so taky without Obie around, haven't they? No.
>> They literally come in the house and poo on the carpet. I'm not okay with it.
>> Oh, it's your fault. It is your fault.
What do you expect if you feed them?
>> I just feeding them.
>> You are feeding them. I saw you drop a crumb. Oh my gosh. You're such a sucker for punishment.
>> Mhm.
>> You love You love that chicken, don't you? That's Olive. We've had it for ages.
>> This one here is the TV.
>> No, it's not the white one with the fanfare. The Marilyn is the cheekiest.
Olive is just like, but you will literally step on her if you if you're not careful. That one is got proper sass. Marilyn's got loads of sass and Olive is just like I ain't moving cuz I don't need to.
>> Can I have a bite of your sandwich?
If you're feeling just look sharing it with the chickens.
>> Does it pay for you?
>> Yeah.
So, we're just having a look at um how much more stone we're going to need to finish this wall off.
>> Yikes. Okay, so the electrician plumbing company is coming next week. So, that gives us a bit more time, which is good because August just asked us to have all of the points assigned for everything. I >> think a lot of it's already been done by Eduardo. So, we'll have a look at his drawings. Maybe we need to give him a text message. The other issue we have is that if you put the windows and doors in and then we finish the exterior, the exterior of this house involves putting all of the pointing between the stones, but also sand blasting the whole building. We don't want to sand blast after the windows and doors are gone in because you could damage the windows and doors. So, >> I don't know. I don't know. It's feeling a little bit like >> So, we were expecting that in the next week or two, the windows and doors would be arriving and being installed, but it's going to take the guys probably 3 weeks, two to 3 weeks with two guys doing it full-time to point the entire building and then it needs to be sand blasted. So, yeah, I don't know. I think our timelines are all getting a little bit pushed. The good news is I think what's going to happen is that the top windows and doors are going to be installed because they are all in the brick work. They're not in the stonework. Yeah. So they can be installed and we can protect them when we sand blast by putting some cardboard over them or some plastic or something.
So those are going to go in. But they are also going to start installing stone on the ver um on the verandas >> on the balconies.
>> I don't know what that looks like. Can you explain that for me?
>> We'll explain it in the episode.
>> Okay. All right. So yeah, so it's all going to happen just maybe not on our timeline.
So yes, there is a lot going on and a lot to look forward to and to plan and dream and think and navigate. Thank you all for journeying through this with us.
And please make sure that you are subscribed so that you don't miss out on everything that is still to come. We're building a big dream here and you guys are a huge part of that.
>> So cool.
>> Yeah.
>> Had an outfit change. Did we come out for a walk?
>> Thought I'd take the wife for a walk.
>> Recognize this place.
>> Yeah.
>> We're walking slowly and just a little walk.
>> Yeah. cuz my back's still not 100%.
But we found them. That's looking cool.
>> You know, >> we thought we'd come and have a look, see what you're up to.
>> Just checking that you are actually working.
>> See whether we should find our um our youngest son. Have you got Sawya?
It >> makes you panic. Yeah.
Is it easy?
>> Yeah, I put the the panels on the place.
It's easy.
But uh you probably know we built this this structure like two or 3 months ago.
>> Okay.
>> So the wood now are one bit >> tendy. But >> yeah, yesterday we we just fix it. We use these pieces of wood like this.
>> Yeah.
>> And some pieces of wood now to close the spaces.
>> Cool.
>> I think now we are good.
>> Is there one or two here? We need to take these out.
>> What?
>> You seen Shi's lawn?
>> Yeah, it looks nice. Eh, >> dude, I am jealous. We could get a lawn like that.
>> That looks great.
>> So, that was a little unexpected twist.
We didn't actually plan to come here and see these guys, but um our farm is quite literally a couple of hundred meters from Jah's place and there's a lovely little loop through the forest that we do. We were going to go down to the river, but my back is not quite ready for that. So, we thought, oh, we'll just do a nice quick walk, spin round, and come and see how these guys are doing.
They finished putting the stonework on the outside of the shed, and it looks amazing.
>> Um, and now they're putting their roof panels on. I'm so proud of them. They've done so well. Let's have a close look at this lawn, shall we?
>> I think most of you do watch Jouah and Leticia's channel already, but in case you don't, I will link it for you in the description below. This video is called Kinta Deadrinia, and they are renovating this family farm of Juel's family. Um, and they're doing a cracking job. So, if you're not already watching and you're not already subscribed, then please head on over and give them some love.
>> Right. Are we off?
>> Let's go.
>> Come. You're going to have to get me off this thing. I found a place to sit. You see >> all backs and all that jazz. Right.
>> There we go.
>> All right, guys. We'll see you later.
>> Thank you.
>> Well done.
>> Looks amazing, man. Look at it.
>> Next time you are coming here, all the roofs are ready.
>> Yeah. So cool, man. Nice work. I'm I'm I'm just proud of of Jouah and Laticia for for having a go at it, you know, and there's a lot there that reminds me of when we started on the farm and we started building and making stuff, you know, Charlotte's got the the the right idea. You start off small and you make a small project bigger and that bigger project leads into other projects that make up a bigger bigger project and >> and you take along all the skills you've learned along the way.
>> Yeah, quite right. Um I'm I I I've said it before. I don't know whether we've ever put it in a video, but we didn't get the big stone house on the side of a hill by starting off saying, "Let's build a big stone house on the side of a hill." Okay, >> we got there bit by bit. One very small project after the next small project after the next small project. You know, we quite literally started >> with a couch and a swimming pool.
>> With a couch and a swimming pool and making stuff out of bamboo.
>> Yeah, it's good to look back and appreciate where you've come from. And it's so exciting to see Ja and Leticia right at the beginning of their journey, you know, >> and for for young people in Portugal especially where, you know, work isn't such an easy thing. Jah and Leticia have got themselves a job giving them that that freedom and that ambition and that purpose as well. So um yeah, great, great, great.
>> Love it.
>> All right, I've got a gate post to go and work on now.
>> Nice. Wait.
Out out. Get out. Get out.
Have you seen what's happening?
>> Trying to grow a flower garden. Let's have a look.
>> Right. What's the plan?
>> All right. I don't think this is going to be easy.
No.
>> How long do you think these gates have been on this gate?
>> A really, really long time.
>> So, have a look, guys. These are our original farm gates, and they're beautiful. The boys have done some redecorating, which is always appreciated. They really are beautiful gates. The only issue with them for not reusing them is that they are too narrow. this just about fits your car, but it's an uncomfortable squeeze. So, we would love to use them, but it they're just not big enough. So, we were thinking maybe we could weld an extra panel onto each side and still use these gates.
Um, so watch the space. I don't know what we're going to do, but I would like to keep them. They're really beautiful and they're a lovely original part of the farm. So, we'll see. First things first, though, we got to get them off their hinges. And that is looking like it might be a bit of a task. I got a feeling we might just be grinding these off.
Oh go >> now.
>> It's better.
Grande.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. I go get my grande.
>> See?
>> See, >> he's going to give you his love.
>> Oh, heck. That's a machine.
>> Yeah, that's it. That's what we're going to need.
>> Marcus is going to go for it. I'm going to move >> the back. Hang on. Right.
>> Okay. Let's plug that in.
That's it.
>> A love.
>> That's it. I feel sad.
>> I think I think we can leave this gate on for today.
>> Okay.
>> Um and just leave it there. It doesn't need to come off.
>> But this gate here because we want to build that wall across.
>> Okay. Yeah.
>> No, it's sharp.
>> Sharp.
>> Is it really heavy?
>> Yeah, it's really heavy.
>> There we go.
Well done.
That's it. Good.
>> That's very cool.
>> Oh dear. Sweet. Good.
>> What? They had a small door there.
>> See?
>> Yeah. See? See?
>> So, here would have been a smaller gate coming in the sideway.
>> Wow. That's cool, isn't it gate?
>> Do you know what I think they did? They started building a wall here and they had these grand plans, these grand ideas. And I think part of those grand plans was to put a a top on this gate post as well.
>> Maybe >> because you remember back in the day we had that big long piece of square granite we've used at the bio.
>> That was up there.
>> Yeah, I think that that was probably a part of this whole system, but they never maybe they ran out of money or they whatever.
>> Okay.
Marcus.
Um, so Marcus is basically saying, "Look, this is very fragile. Um, so is this. It's made from stone, but it's still fragile. We've got a problem um here. And the way that we're going to fix that is we'll have to first take the grinder um and cut along this line here where the join is through the through the concrete. Um, and then take this off and we'll protect it. We'll look after it cuz we can stick it back later."
>> Cool. Um, and for these, this top bit should come off pretty easily with a tractor, but this bottom bit, this is far, far in the ground.
>> Um, and it's probably got a whole bunch of concrete around the bottom of it as well.
>> So, it needs a >> This is going to be big big job to get it out.
>> Do we need to call Senor Mario?
>> Yeah, I would trust Mario to come and do that. It's a It's a half an hour job for him.
>> Yeah.
>> Um, >> all right. Well, let's find out when he's next available. Yeah, because we're getting a new stone delivery fairly soon >> and then all of this can get going here.
>> Matt, where do you what's going on here?
