Jimmy demonstrates that true apiary management is the art of reading biological cues and preparing for nature’s inevitable pivots. His focus on supersedure and contingency planning elevates routine hive checks into a disciplined practice of ecological foresight.

A quick look in the front two hives.本站添加:
Hi everybody. Welcome back to Neighborhood Bees. I'm Jimmy.
Keeping bees in a regular neighborhood.
Um, let me move over here so you can see Chesterfield County, Virginia.
And I would like to welcome you guys. It's good to be home.
Anyway, I know I'm corny. But anyway, let me read the fortune and then tell you what the this quick video is about. Little update on the swarm trap.
Spoiler alert, nothing in there. But anyway, All right, let's let's see here. What do we got here?
A family reunion in the coming months will be a tremendous success.
Family reunion in a couple of months.
Well, a couple coming months.
Uh, hopefully we probably do it's probably time that we need to go to um Louisiana and Texas to visit my sister, the the aunt of the bees in Texas. Uh, and then uh, my other sister, my brother in Louisiana.
Um, as well as Sharon's family. She has uh, uh, two sisters in Louisiana and she has one in Arkansas now. So, you know, maybe we'll make a little loop or something.
We'll figure it out. Go visit some family. And uh, I want to say congratulations to Sharon's nephew, my nephew, who uh, recently was married last last week.
Congratulations to you and your lovely bride. Anyway, so today what's going on? Let me throw this in here.
Um, I have the other two hives, my main two hives in the front row that I haven't looked at. I looked at the the licen hive with the new queen and I looked at the farmhouse with the new queen.
Um, I have my yellow hive with the existing queen that's been gangbusters.
Uh, there is one honey super on there. I want to check and make sure maybe I'll put another if they're drawing out well because these are all new frames.
Um, foundation frames. So, uh, if they're drawing well, it's kind of a yeah, because we've been in the 90-plus degree temperatures for the past 3 days or so.
We've been right at the record. We broke a record I think one day. So, it's almost like a weird like a dirt the the the flowers are just not producing. We need rain. We have not had the rain. So, um, but yeah, so I'm keeping an eye on them.
Um, the small licen hive I'm feeding. That's the only hive that's getting liquid feed and it's less than one to one sugar.
Uh, sugar syrup with uh, a hive alive.
Not sponsored but I put a couple of the drops of hive alive fondant in the in the mix.
Okay, so today I'm going to go in the other two hives.
I may Put that. Um, the red one uh, that had a new queen.
So, I want to look at the the brood pattern in there. See what she's doing, where she's doing it at. Uh, may manipulate some boxes and if need be and they need some room, I can put I have a super that's ready and a and a queen excluder. That's uh, ready to go at any moment. So, let me do that. Let me put on my suit. I got my smoker lit. I kind of added a little holder over here.
Let's see.
I might have to give it a couple of puffs to get it going good.
Or yeah, she's lit. Okay. And uh, yeah. So, let me get on my jacket and uh, get on out there and knock this out because it's uh, afternoon and I I had to run out here real quick to be able to do this. So, let's go do that.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Well, [music] I guess I don't know. Mixed bags over there. The yellow hive with the super on it was bees were plenty. There was plenty of brood in there.
And uh, yeah, things were happening.
I didn't see any queen cells or anything. There was a lot of brood. So, what I did was moved two frames of brood up into the super.
Um, that way the bees will get used to going through the queen excluder to you know, work on those um, comb up there, the the the frames.
The red hive, where do I begin? Um, that was a queen that I brought I put in, you know, 2 weeks ago or so. Let me let me hang this one here.
Okay, that was a queen that I brought in and uh, she I marked her pink. She's in there walking around.
I don't see any larvae. She's supposedly been a mark uh, um, mated queen. But uh, I don't know. I don't see any signs.
What I do see is they have a capped queen cell in there.
Um, it looked like it was a supercedure.
It's in the middle of one of the frames.
So, I left it.
I'm going to monitor that. I marked that frame so I know where that cell was.
I left the the the I saw the marked queen. She was pink.
And uh, walking around all willy-nilly, not laying any eggs. I didn't see any.
So, I'm going to let her do let that hive do what it's going to do for right now.
Uh, however, my contingency plan, I do have two nukes coming next month.
So, um, it may be, you know, a thing where I I replace that entire hive with the nuke, grow it from there.
And uh, you know, I'll do whatever. I'll I'll you know, and then the the licen hive, it's it's doing well. I didn't look inside today. All I did was top off the the liquid feed.
So, but the other day she was looking good. So, the licen hive may be one going to the farm and one of the nukes and I may keep one of the nukes for here.
So, I have options. That's all I'm trying to say. Anyway, today's shirt.
This is a courtesy of Fred Dunn. Not courtesy, I bought it. Or Sharon bought it for me.
This was one of Fred Dunn's shirts. I don't think I can find it on the uh, site anymore.
But uh, you know, the back says, you know, the way to be, Fred Dunn.
And uh, here it says, if you can read this, we're about to discuss bees.
Uh, uh, honey bees. Anyway, my wife says I don't have to wear this shirt. If if you're looking in my eyes, you're about [music] to discuss honey bees.
Anyway, um, uh, but for this seriously, those of you who are new to beekeeping, >> [music] >> first year, second year, eighth year, whatever.
Go to Fred Dunn's channel. On Fridays he does a question and answer. If you have a question, you could [music] submit it.
Lot of good information. He does a lot of research. He's not telling you how you should keep your bees. He's just telling you options. It's it's a wonderful resource. So, check that [music] out. Frederick Dunn.
He knows who I am, you know. Hey Fred.
Um, but uh, you know, you won't get a discount. Just tell them Jimmy sent you.
Anyway, I'm going to get out of here because I have other stuff to do. I still have so much to do for the uh uh fair, uh the bee festival that we have. So, uh yeah. Come join us at the bee festival, and I'll see you guys later.
And as always, have fun with your bees, even when they're not doing what they're supposed to do because they didn't read [music] the same book that we got. So, anyway, bye, y'all.
