Android 17 QPR1 Beta 1 – New & Hidden Features + Performance & Stability Test

[00:00:00]Hello everyone and welcome to the channel. Surprisingly, today Google released Android 17 QPR1 beta 1 that I have here on my Pixel 10 Pro XL to show you all the new changes. So, without further ado, let's jump in.

[00:00:18]Let's start by talking about something very important before showing you the new changes. Android 17 QPR1 is the beta cycle for September feature drop and we have the normal Android 17 beta cycle which is currently on beta 4. If you want to get the stable version of Android 17 which is expected within a couple of months without wiping your device, you need to stay on Android 17 beta 4 and ignore this update. But if you decided to update your device to QPR1 beta 1, then you need to wait till September to be able to get the stable version of Android 17 without data wipe.

[00:00:52]To make it even simpler, if you want to get the stable version of Android 17 without wiping your device, just head over to Google and type Android beta program. Open this page. Make sure you are signed in with the same Google account you have on your device and opt out of the Android 17 beta program and then wait for the stable version of Android 17. But if you are excited to try the new features in this update, you need to stay in the Android 17 beta program. Head over to settings, check for updates, and Google will push QPR1 beta 1 to your device. But as I mentioned earlier, after installing this update, if you want to get back to the stable cycle without data wipe, you need to wait till September when Google releases September pixel drop. And now let's take a look at the update size and build number. And here I have 255 mgbytes and the build number is CP31.26043.005A1.

[00:01:48]And now let's take a look at the new features. Unfortunately, Android 17 QPR1 beta 1 doesn't have any exciting new features and I was able to spot only two new changes. The first one is in the systemwide search. So let me show you a quick example here. Now, we have bigger banners when compared to the previous versions of Android. And for reference, here is a side-by-side comparison with Android 17 beta 4. And you can see a massive difference in the size of the search in apps category. Plus, we have two containers around the buttons at the bottom. And when you take a look here at the quick shortcuts, they are also bigger, same as the web search results.

[00:02:30]The second change can be found under settings, then display and touch. When you go to screen saver, you will see a brand new option here called Android with the Android 17 logo. When you tap on the preview button, you will see something very similar to the Android 17 Easter egg, which is the spaceship game.

[00:02:49]And when you start the screen saver, you'll also get the same live notification here at the top, which you can dismiss by tapping and holding on it like this. and then tap on dismiss. As per the release notes, they fix the crash in the default print service occurring during low-end conditions that prevents users from completing print jobs. The terminal app triggers an application not responding error that results in the application and device becoming unresponsive.

[00:03:54]resolved an issue where uncontrollable hardware audio processing on the device communication path caused distortion and phase cancellation in VoIP applications.

[00:04:04]And lastly, direct audio output may fail to open on devices using the AIDL audio hal when playing audio streams longer than 5 seconds. So, what about my experience with the performance and the stability of QPR1 beta 1 while filming the video? To me, it feels even better than Android 17 beta 4. The apps are very responsive, and I couldn't spot any major bugs or issues while filming the video. And when it comes to my Geekbench scores, I got 6,79 for the multi-core and 2,36 for the single core, which is about the same as the numbers I got on the 17th of April. And when it comes to the GPU, I got 4,863.

[00:04:50]And I think this build is very solid and stable, but I'm not sure if it works exactly the same on all models or not. I only tested it on the 10 Pro XL. So, that's pretty much it for today.
