The Truth About Playing For Your Hometown Team ft. ECU OL Bryce Weaver.Hinzugefügt:
This podcast is brought to you by Anen belt. Over 10,000 combinations, micro adjustable hololess belts. We love Anen belt. I went to a wedding uh the last like five weekends. Actually, worn an belt every single time. Flipped and flopped the uh different belt and buckle. Okay. What's your favorite thing about Anson belt?
>> I love when it gets close to football season. We're closing off football season. Just bringing the Jolly Roger back out. Speaking of, do you have an Anson belt yet?
>> I don't think I do actually. I need to I need to get one for sure.
>> No, we got you. We got you. We're going to get David to get We need him and Jackson Bark. We need to get him one.
You know what else we love, Kaden?
>> Supporting Pirates.
>> Supporting Pirates. Tiebreaker Sports Bar. We absolutely love Tiebreers. Best ranch in town. I know someone who I guarantee you loves. Tiebreaker.
>> This guy right here. I can just tell about body tie breakers right there.
>> I love tiebreers.
>> Shout out to Tie Breakers for supporting the pod.
>> But what do we love about tiebreers?
>> I I love everything. I love their juicy burgers. There we go. There we go.
>> And Okay. likes the wings. Which wings do you get?
>> All right. Hear me out. Boneless. Okay.
>> Oh boy.
>> When you say, "Hear me out."
>> He doesn't know both.
>> I like boneless, too, though. I'm not going to lie. I was going to say something crazier than that.
>> No. No. No. Let's hear them out, though.
>> Yeah. You got to get the the the honey barbecue boneless.
>> I agree with that flavor.
>> Yeah. And then mandatory bacon cheese fry for sure.
>> Bacon cheese fry.
>> He does know. Mandatory.
>> That guy knows ball.
>> How many do you eat at one setting?
>> What are you talking about? Wings or wings?
>> Both, I guess. Uh, I probably could do 15 wings.
>> Okay. I thought he was going to say 50 wings.
>> No, but Okay, listen. So, it depends. If I'm getting appetizer or >> Okay. How many wings could you eat in one sitting?
>> Probably after a fall camp day, >> probably around like 50, I'd say.
>> Let's go.
>> Welcome back in to the whole show. We're here with Greenville local DH Conley alum, ECU pirate. I forgot how big offensive linemen are. Bryce Weaver, >> what's going on? How y'all doing?
>> We're doing good. We're happy to see you.
>> We are here.
>> Let's go. It's been a long time, dude. I feel like every time I see him, I'm like, "We need to get you on the pod.
Then you get you on the pot." I was like, "We got to get Bryce on the pot."
>> I have seen I've seen you quite a while.
Quite a lot recently here.
>> Yeah.
>> Do you uh do you know any good softball players?
>> We're looking to recruit for next season.
>> We came in third place out this year out of four teams.
>> So, you know, my brother played church softball in Greenville for a little bit and he was kind of bad. So, I wouldn't say him. I >> he was on my list. Crossed.
>> You know who's our pitcher is De's. De actually told me he was going to get me a sub crush tonight if uh if I gave him a shout out. So, Kaden, free sub crush for me today.
>> Shout out D, too. I saw him running the other day. Actually, I saw him running.
>> I saw him running. I I swear >> he's getting some secret workouts in.
Good for him, man.
>> Yeah, good for him. Speaking of workouts, so how is uh how was spring?
How just go through that? I mean, we haven't really talked to many players since then. So, how's it been?
>> Uh, you know, everything's been pretty good. Spring was, you know, I thought it was pretty good. You know, just getting everybody in, seeing, you know, how people mesh and stuff like that. But, you know, just also, you know, kind of some growing pains as well with the new offense and stuff like that. But, you know, that's going to happen. You know, we're fresh and stuff like that. But, you know, right now it's we're just getting back into summer and everybody, you know, coming back together. So, everything's been pretty good so far.
>> How are you doing after your injury?
>> Uh, you know, I'm doing pretty good. You know, luckily for me, I I don't know how, but I got through that pretty quickly, you know, especially for being during the season, you know, so I thought, you know, maybe I it'd be some more trouble after, but you know, it's been pretty good so far. Uh Shane got me right with some uh some souls that, you know, I wear during the game and in my cleats. I I got to get a certain certain cleat because Adidas doesn't make the best cleat. They don't make the best.
>> They don't make the best cleat for O line. So, I got to get the widest cleat possible and I, you know, I I make it work. got them wide feet.
>> Yeah, wide feet.
>> How was uh like you've had a couple quarterbacks now since playing? Like how are the two quarterbacks this spring as an offensive lineman?
>> Uh I saw Jackson say this, but I I actually think that this is the closest QB battle I've seen. You know, >> these guys are it's just, you know, they're they're two different players, but they're both great leaders. you know, they're they're easy to talk to, which I, you know, for me, I love that as a quarterback because I don't want a guy that I can't, you know, trust and, you know, just sit back, have a conversation with you, just be a regular guy. Like, I think both of them just, you know, they're either option is is amazing.
>> How was like being around Jordan Davis as an offensive coordinator? You've only obviously been with JDB and you know, Donnie just from being here obviously.
So, like, how's Jordan Davis been so far?
>> Uh, you know, he's been, you know, he's been he's been good to me. you know, nothing really growing with him at all.
Uh, I'd say he and JDB are kind of similar with the offense. So, I kind of like that. Um, you know, it's not too hard for me to, you know, different differentiate what plays he's running and what plays he's calling, stuff like that. It's all the same for me basically.
>> So, it's really kind of the same.
>> Yeah.
>> How do they differentiate for us? Like, we played for coach Peterson who was more uptight. Then we had Donnie who was more laidback. how or I guess for you personalitywise or just different ways call plays.
>> I say coach Davis is I say he's a little laidback. You know if every coach can uh get into you but you know that's that's going to happen. But you know I think you know the whenever every time I have a conversation with him and he comes up to me and talks to me you know he seems you know pretty chill. So you know I like that a lot.
>> You missed that.
>> What?
>> You had a total pause moment but we we did >> I missed it. Go ahead. You got one more.
You know, you hear you say >> every coach can get into you.
>> Go ahead.
>> Oh man, that I was like geeking for a second.
>> I didn't even realize I said good though.
>> What What What are the two quarterbacks like um are It's one like commanding. I always go back to like Pton Manning commanding the huddle having >> Yeah, I I'd say both of them are. Mitch I'd say Mitch is a little You know, Mitch talks more than Emry does. He's a little more aggressive. Emry, you know, but they're they're both Emryy's a great time manager. He he he understands the game. He's smart. So, you know, both of them just whenever we're going to a play, they're both, "Oh, yeah, guys.
Let's go out here.
>> Touchdown." You know, that's that's every time that's that's the only thing that's on their mind. So, you know, I they're both commanding for sure.
>> You lost uh a couple receivers. Yeah.
>> This past year. Um and go to the wide shot if you don't mind. But losing a couple receivers, like do you think Kaden would be good at receiving two off?
>> But how do you think like what receivers are going to step up? You think >> uh you know, obviously Brock Spalding is going to step up. You know, he's been he's been here for a while and he's you know, every every year that I've been here with him, he's he's proved proved himself over and over again. So, you know, I think he'll just do that again.
Um we got some new transfers laying sides. Um Ray Ray, we got a lot of guys that I think, you know, could step into a role. Tyler Johnson, he's looking he's looking good. He looked really good during spring and you know we got a lot of pieces that we could put anywhere and you know still be good. So >> what do you think like I guess recruiting wise now? Like I remember so if people don't know I literally like we used to like play football underneath Conley's bleachers together when our brothers played.
>> Did you guys play in high school together at all?
>> No. I'm five what am I five six years?
I'm pretty I'm older than him. Um but we used to like cuz our brothers cuz DJ is like Griff's age or maybe Jordan's age.
They all play together. So me and him be running on He used to be like little Bryce and then like I went to college I came I'm like dang Bryce is huge now.
>> I mean >> you got a grow >> a little bit. I I kind of had had like a little late grow.
>> How late are we talking?
>> Like I'd say junior year I kind of I got up to like 6'4.
>> Yeah.
>> What were you before?
>> I was like my sophomore year I was like six 6'1 maybe. But I was like 510 6 foot for a good while. Like during middle school ninth grade >> like a little bit of 10th grade. You didn't. You're like, "Oh, boy." Yeah.
>> You're a basketball player, too?
>> Yeah. I was hoop, too.
>> That's what his family does.
>> That's my brother DJ. He's He played division three basketball at North Carolina Wesley and in Rocky Mount here.
Team MVP twice.
>> Oh, wow.
>> Yeah. He was He's kind of a baller. Uh my my middle brother, he sucks at basketball, but he did play basketball.
>> He played too though.
>> He will say he will say that uh he got better, but I mean better at all.
>> But Kane played at Choan, too. Yeah, he played uh one year Cho on football.
>> He played college basketball.
>> No, football. Football.
>> My No, I actually like my my family's they're athletes, but you know, >> you that means you give good footwork.
You got to play with football.
>> Yeah, I I do. I play we play soccer, too.
>> Where do you highlight your your best skill set of your game? Footwork or >> I probably say footwork. Yeah.
>> Just you know, be my size and everyone's like, you know, you can't play tackle and stuff. I'm like, I mean, my my footwork's good enough.
>> You got to be quick.
>> Yeah, you do. People forget that about tackling. You had to move.
>> I remember uh like this off season, it felt like like when the bowl game ended, even some before is like everyone was leaving. It was like literally if you were a starter, you were leaving.
>> Um and I remember talking to you about it being like what is the best situation for you? Like should you should you stay and stuff. What made you stay and come back? Well, first I would say coach Harold, you know, coach Herold, you know, he's done a great job ever since he's got the head coaching job and you know, he's just even not even being a coach. He's just a great person in general. You know, just being able to talk to him and >> it's, you know, him uh >> I got I got some boys here, you know, Carson, you know, Carson, you know, but also the family and, you know, I just think, you know, with the opportunity that we have this year, it's it's, you know, we we could do something really special this year. No, I'm not playing in that hometown either.
>> Yeah, for sure.
>> Got mama's cooking. You got to give your mom a shout out, dude. You know she can watch this.
>> How was your recruiting process? Like I know personally, let's just talk about it though of just being like going from like you were talking about like an undersized kid to then be like, "Holy crap, like I'm a D1 guy and like wow, I can play in my hometown." Like what was the recruiting process like?
>> Uh so you know I I had no idea anything about me getting recruited. I went to ECU football camp my sophomore year summer going in my junior and uh Derek Miller the old recruiter >> like&m now >> he came up to me during I forgot to get my measurements or something like that like completely forgot was on the field doing like 510 five or something like that he comes up to me he's like hey uh I need your measurements and I'm like all right I'll come with you and he's like he told he tells me like off the like right on the spot he's like yeah this we're recruiting you I'm like oh >> was that the first school >> uh yeah he was the first school yeah and then I talked to Houston after that. Um and then I talked to some schools like App State started talking to me a little bit, >> Elon. And then um ECU offered me I went on official visit or no I went on a u not official visit unofficial visit uh like my junior year and then right after they offered me Elon me the next day and that's really all I had. App State NC State talked to me but you know >> they they weren't really budging at all.
So, you know, I decided to stay home.
>> Were you pretty Was it like a dream come true?
>> I'd say >> or did you not think?
>> Okay. So, first, >> Be real. Be real.
>> I'll be real right now. All right. So, my sophomore, junior year, something like that. I was like, dude, I'm not going to like I'm not staying home.
Like, I want to get away from my parents.
>> And then my senior year rolls around, you know, I get a girlfriend. Uh I'm like, dang, dude. Like, nobody like I, you know, I go to camps and stuff like dang, nobody really offered me.
>> But like they're still talking to me.
So, I'm like, all right. you know, I can wait it out. And Coach Katrick, >> he's like, "Hey, I'm letting you know like if you don't commit in like the next month or offering three dudes like >> I'm pretty sure I was on my official visit, which was like that next week after you text me that." And I >> That's how you close a deal.
>> And I deal.
>> You still with the girlfriend?
>> Oh, yeah. I am.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> I was just like, "If you weren't, I'm like, you're still here anyways."
>> Oh, that's great. How's your experience been being like the the hometown kid?
Like >> is it like obviously like I know what it's like of like dreaming of it versus like reality like what is your >> man? It's a lot for sure. I enjoy it a lot. Um hold on.
>> I enjoy it a lot for sure. But um >> it definitely comes it comes with some stuff for sure. I'll say you know >> walking into somewhere and it's like oh dang like I know him over there. I know him. I'm with, you know, couple of the buddies and they're just like, they're like, I don't care. And >> yeah, >> I tell them stuff. I'm like, dude, I know him. I know him. They're like, oh, you're a celebrity. I'm like, I'm not trying to be I actually know like I grew up with these people. So, no, but you know, no matter all that stuff, but I still I still enjoy it a lot for sure.
It's dude it's the greatest I remember like talking about that is like I remember like when we were really bad like 2018 2019 and really 2022 but 2020 we didn't really have fans would be like we would be getting booed on the field and I would like look up and I would know the guys like who are booing and I'm like dog like we I grew up with you like >> I'll see you after >> Yeah. It's like I'm not it's not like I'm the punter like if I'm the quarterback you're pretty much booing me like >> they ask for an autograph after too.
Yeah. And just suck up.
>> What's What's the hardest thing about >> playing ball in your hometown?
>> Uh, shoot, man.
>> You don't have to say if you don't want to.
>> No, I mean it's not it's hard for me to really find something. I mean, I wouldn't say it's that hard. I just say >> know everybody really, man, cuz you know, you could you could catch you could get caught up in some stuff, too, if you're not smart. For sure. So, >> we don't know anyone like that from the names.
>> Oh, it was a clean kid.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Good guys. Um, >> who's next in the Conley pipeline?
>> You guys know anyone else next? I know we're getting old.
>> I'll throw a name out there.
>> Go ahead.
>> Crumpler.
>> I need him here.
>> I don't know. We're not We're not with part of ECU. I don't know if you can talk about it, but uh >> Hey, we just have a conversation with ourselves real fast.
>> Yeah, Isaiah Crumpler went to Conley's at Ruckers right now. He's a safety. His dad works for ECU in the Hall of Fame. I mean, I don't know why he wouldn't. I I was talking to someone the other day and they were like he likes it there but I'm like dude come play here >> dude could you imagine coming to here like come here. Yeah.
>> Ruckers isn't like Ruckers in the Big 10 but they don't have the fan base. I would put ECU fan base where Ruckers.
>> Yeah.
>> I gave him a little word about that. The fan base is for sure.
>> We gave Crumple what?
>> Yeah.
>> We give Crumpler a word too. Get back to ECU. Man, >> you just looked at the wrong camera.
>> No. It's all good.
>> You guys looking at Bama yet?
Uh, you know, we're >> we're not thinking about it yet, one day at a time.
>> I mean, you know, of course we're thinking about it, but you know, um, you know, Coach Harold really emphasizes, you know, making sure that, you know, we're we're feet is where we're at. So, >> yeah, but like outside of that, like are you guys really looking for me?
>> Yeah, I'm I'm ready for that game, man.
I I'm ready to shock the world, you know? That's I that's all I want for >> ABC 12:00 kickoff >> opening day weekend. That is like the Yeah, heck yeah.
I don't want to overhype it. But it's big time. No, treat him like another game.
>> Yeah, another game. Hey, you guys win that, I will cry. And I have cried a game.
>> We're We're storming the field if we if we win.
>> I told I told Holton this. He say he's storming the field. My wife also said that too. And I'm like, guys, if we upset Alabama, which I believe we will, but let's say when we upset Alabama, you storm that field. First off, that's religion to them.
>> Jesus, Nick Sabin, football, they might be even in the state of Alabama. You're going to storm that field and the Tuscaloosa Police Department are going to put like a $10,000 $20,000 uh what's it called?
>> Bond.
>> Bond on your head.
>> It'd be worth it. I think >> I'm not paying it.
>> Bryce be out there celebrating.
>> The military. The military bowl was awesome because it was neutral. I don't think you're that you might get killer in B. You storm the field.
>> Don't I mean if we win we should storm the field 100%.
>> I I'll be crying from the stands but >> that would be Dude, that'd be crazy.
didn't you pick me just teared up.
>> What are your uh like what's the locker room like and like what what are y'all's like goals? I know obviously team has goals and stuff. You're not in camp yet.
I ask a lot of time when you talk about it, but just like going into the next season from now like what are y'all's goals?
>> Uh you know obviously conference championship first and foremost. Uh you know we had the opportunity to do that last year and you know kind of slipped away from us. So >> that's our first goal but you know playoffs too you know because that comes with conference too as well. So, you know, just get into the playoffs, you know, have an opportunity to do that.
You know, I >> that's a lot of the locker room is talking about that. And I I feel like everybody, you know, same same mind and, you know, has the same goal. So, I we have the opportunity to for sure.
>> Let's go.
>> Do you have a if I was offensive line and I think I would have a number at least. Do you have a pancake goals?
>> At least I'd say per game. At least two per game.
>> Per game for the casual fan. Can you explain a pancake? Uh, basically flattening another def deep salmon.
Yeah.
>> Put them on there.
>> Yeah. Their ass.
>> Uh, last question and then Katie, I have questions if you want. I just remember like one of my vivid memories. I think I have a video of it is like I don't know if you'll have like a last day of conditioning in the summer, >> but like the linemen would go before us and they'd be just sprawled out on the turf.
>> Um, what is your like going into the summer and stuff? Like you've been here a couple times now. like what are you one looking forward to and then what are you like bro I do not want to do that as a lineman. Uh, first thing I'm not looking forward to, I'll start with that is the stadiums. That's Coach Bagot. You know, he >> I heard he's he's big stadium guy.
>> Big stadium guy, but you know, he he nah, not he kind of looks out for Okay, so the skills in the combos, they're doing snakes.
>> Yeah.
>> Hold.
>> We're just, you know, we're running up.
>> Okay.
>> He could have it worse. John Fellacy, our sinner, >> he got a concussion cuz he was running his legs got so shaky that he fell and hit his head on the freaking stairs >> and he was he might not have ever played again actually.
>> No, I don't think that was what caused >> it was one of the concussions >> that did happen. But yeah, he did fall on the stairs. Was that a time that we were carrying people?
>> And then one time, you know, big Shawn Bailey.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> One of our defensive ends carried Shawn Bailey up the stairs.
>> That was my freshman year. I'm like, "Dog, like if he falls, he's dead."
>> Who did that?
>> Swift.
>> His back was >> Swift.
>> Yes, it was. Michael Swift.
>> Oh, man. Wow.
>> I thought it was Kendall F.
>> Shout out to him, man. That was That's a >> That's scary right there, >> dude. Yeah. I don't know how that was like even allowed. But yeah, stadiums, people don't know, dude. One of those will get like if you literally just run up, your legs start twerking, >> I think. Have Did you guys do the um fullfield shuttle? Um, we did with Big John.
>> That will have your legs torn. Every f what? Every Friday.
>> Yeah.
>> Or what did we do? Every pirate.
It was called the pirate pride.
>> That's what we did for my fresh when I first got here. We did pirate pride.
>> Pirate pride. Yeah.
>> But like coach Bagot is like real deal.
Like >> squat stadiums like >> Coach C in them.
>> My very first day cuz he was under coach C at some point. My very first day, Coach C was his name. He's like a legend here. I had to do 10 sets of 10 on squat. Then we ran five stadiums and then we came in and I'm like dead by that point. I'm like, "Dude, what the heck?" And then we raced. They used to have a track where the turf is now in the weight room, like just a straight track, and we would run 300s in there.
And he made me and Pete Winstead call out a senior and race in 300s >> race.
So I had a Gardner Mincch was there at the time. So I called him out and like I I lost by like one second because I was so mad cuz you it was like six down in backs and I ran five and I thought it was the last one and I won and I ran through and then Garner touched the line and ran back and I'm like dog >> that's why you always touch the line.
>> Yeah, come on man.
>> And you do it extra just >> how mad you think Garner was that you called him out to do that.
>> It was kind of like I had to. Yeah, he probably was cuz he left like a week later.
>> But yeah, he probably was. But dude, yeah, I remember my first day and then after I'm sitting there, I'm like I've never like passed out before cuz of like working out.
>> And I'm sitting there, I'm like, dude, I don't know how I'm going to get through college if this is how working out is in college.
>> I always said summer was the hardest, >> but it's also morning.
>> Oh, for sure.
>> It's the worst.
>> I Well, hold on. I say winter is actually hard. It's cold. It's cold.
>> Wake up earlier.
>> I rather the cold.
>> Nah, you're tripping. I >> Well, summer for us. Big bigs are always first. So, we're we're waking up early no matter what. Well, you know, did you have the 3 p.m. run?
>> No.
>> After lunch when Coach Mo was here, we had a 3 p.m. run after lunch and you got dumb.
>> Yeah. And that that in Eastern North Carolina as hell.
>> As hell. Probably 95 outside.
>> More than that.
>> And the turf is like 115.
>> I just remember the turf like during summer we'd be running and if you had like the 11 a.m. run, your cleats would melt into your feet. You literally have so >> you wear black out there. Your feet are cooking.
>> Yeah, but it does get you a good tan during the summer. That's the best part.
Dark right now, too. I was out there this morning.
>> Might be a little darker at the end of the summer.
>> We're have Bryce on before in August.
Like the same guy.
>> Well, thanks for joining, dude. That was a blast. We have to get you on soon again and we'll uh we'll get you on before the season.
>> Appreciate y'all.
>> Gosh. Appreciate y'all for having me. Go Connley Vikings 252.
