Now, at first, that may not sound revolutionary. After all, America, China, and and Russia already have hypersonic weapons. So, what's special here?
Most hypersonic systems people hear about are ballistic missiles, boost glide vehicles, or short duration demos.
But sustained air-breathing hypersonic propulsion, that's a completely different challenge. Because making something go hypersonic for a few seconds is one thing. Keeping it stable, fueled, and controllable for 20 minutes at Mach 6 or Mach 8, that's the hard part.
Now, let's understand the scale. Mach 6 is roughly 120 km per minute. Mach 8, nearly 160. So, a hypersonic cruise vehicle sustaining those speeds for 20 minutes could theoretically enter the 2,500 to 3,300 km range class. That's strategic range territory.
For comparison, BrahMos, up to 800 km.
Russia's Zircon, roughly 1,500 km.
