On November 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, the largest ship on the Great Lakes at 729 feet of steel, sank in a severe storm on Lake Superior with 80 mph winds and 35-foot waves. Despite Captain Ernest McSorley's 44 years of experience and both pumps running, the ship broke in two and disappeared from radar without any distress call, resulting in the loss of all 29 crew members. This tragedy remains one of the most famous maritime disasters in Great Lakes history, with no major commercial vessel lost on these waters since.
