A wind advisory is issued when gusty winds are expected to create hazardous conditions, particularly in specific terrain areas like mountain slopes and downwind regions. In this Hawaii forecast, a wind advisory is in effect for Maui County and the Big Island due to gusty winds developing as a strong high-pressure system moves in, with gusts potentially reaching 50 mph on terrain features. The forecast explains that wind direction affects surf conditions, with east winds creating larger swells on the east side of islands. The forecast also discusses how El Niño conditions can influence hurricane season activity, noting that the current season is expected to be above average due to this developing climate pattern.

Thursday Weather Forecast | A Wind Advisory is in effect as gusty winds develop across the islandsAdded:
It is 6:16, almost 6:17 on this Wednesday evening and we're taking a look outside South Shore and surf has been up a little bit along some of the shorelines. We welcome Pete back in and then Pete, what's our surf looking like out It's a beautiful day today.
>> Yeah, wind's picking up, that means we look out to the east side for some bigger surf and we're looking at 6-8 footers expected for tomorrow as that east wind swell develops. So, winds affecting our seas, our surf and certainly east side's going to have some bigger surf there. Small craft advisories as mentioned earlier, Maui County into the Big Island. Temperatures comfortable right now. We've got a few light showers rolling through at time, 78 current temperature. Those winds though, look at that, 21 sustained.
We've had gusts over 30 here in town and over 40 in some spots across um Molokai as we take a look at the radar, relatively quiet here across Kauai, Oahu got some light showers have been kind of on and off and we've got additional light rains that have kind of rolled through town at times and right now looks like we got another little light sprinkle pushing through Waikiki and here in town. So, some light rain there.
Won't last all that long, maybe 5-10 minutes. Into Molokai, Maui and Lanai, not much, a few windward showers for Maui. Big Island right now uh looking into a couple of windward areas of rain.
We'll see some trade showers tonight into tomorrow morning, but overall the trend over the next few days will be a drying trend. So, for our Thursday, gusty winds, we have a wind advisory for parts of Maui County into the Big Island mainly on top of and just down slope of terrain, we can see the gustiest winds potentially up to 50 mph in those spots.
Rest of us could see some gust up to 40.
Into Friday, keeping it breezy, again drier air filtering in tomorrow, filtering in Friday. That's going to lower our shot of rain into the holiday weekend. Drier conditions, winds maybe not quite as strong, especially by Sunday, but still somewhat breezy and especially Saturday, the winds will come down slightly Sunday into Memorial Day Monday, but should be a nice one to get rain chances very limited for tonight.
74 is the low. We'll see some passing light trade showers getting up to 85 for your Thursday winds picking up 15 to 30 higher gusts especially on top of and just down slope of terrain. Do you want to mention tomorrow we get our hurricane outlook so the prediction from the National Weather Service Noah that's released at 5:00 a.m. between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. They'll have it on a Good Morning Hawaii. Average season has about four to five storms likely this season's going to be above average due to a developing El Niño. Our record season was during an El Niño year back in 2015.
So want to tune in for that. Again, it'll be on Good Morning Hawaii as we head into the 5:00 to 6:00 time frame into the weekend. Breezy winds sticking around. They'll start to moderate a bit Sunday into Monday and not much rain expected. So looking good for the holiday weekend.
