Tuchel makes big calls, but they're right for a biggest ever World CupAdded:
So, some big calls in Thomas Tuchel's 26-man World Cup squad, but that is to cater almost exclusively for what is the biggest World Cup ever. It has more variables than any other in history with 48 teams stretching over 5 weeks, and Tuchel has basically sought to cover every one of those variables. That's the rationale behind a lot of this. I'm actually at Wembley now. As you can see, actually some of the Sorry, the names from the 26-man squad are being announced on the big screen above that statue of Bobby Moore that this newly picked squad will hope to emulate. We're going to hear Tuchel's explanations for these call-ups at 11:00 a.m. So, we'll do another video on that later. But, to be honest, I think a lot of it is self-explanatory as much of a surprise as there is.
As I say, he's picked for various eventualities or variables. Among them, the conditions, the likelihood they're going to face at least two penalty shootouts. I think that's a big reason why Ivan Toney's there.
He's one of the headline and his form is some of the headline news. As does Harry Maguire, if mostly for his comments afterwards. And obviously then, the omission of some of the big number 10s, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Morgan Gibbs-White. And two of those, I suppose, people would have thought their situation unmanageable in Euro 2024.
But, again, when you stand back, I feel it does make a certain sense. I mean, look, as well as all this being predicated on the size of this World Cup, it's also on the idea that Tuchel basically has close to a preferred best 11.
Certainly in the front six. So, with Reece James in the right back, the midfield Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Harry Kane.
It's a good, strong squad. I'd say close to world-class with a lot of now winning experience at elite level. After that, though, it does get a little bit thin because most of England's world-class quality is clustered in key positions.
The biggest of those being at number 10.
And when you get into that situation, like one of England's classic problems in the in the past has been just shoehorning in big names for the sake of it. Or just because they're there. When it is that isn't necessarily the best for the squad. And we saw some of this issue with the number 10s in Euro 2024.
Not Not just in the squad, but on the pitch where there was almost a confusion over where they should go. So, if you strip away some of those 10s, it does make it cleaner. It makes the decision making cleaner.
Um it makes maybe a kind of a hierarchy clearer.
Uh So, yeah, like I mean, there's no There's no real point taking three of them, which means some have to miss out.
Uh Phil Foden, I mean, he hasn't made much impact at all this season. It is unfortunate. Cole Palmer has obviously been returning from injury, but and has only started to recover form, but it's only ever in bursts.
Gibbs-White is probably just the unluckiest because of the season he's had. But that is the sort of hard decision that picking a tournament squad comes down to. Um And from that as well, when you see the names picked ahead, there is an obvious logic. Uh I mean, Jude Bellingham is is still one of England's best players despite all the debate. Um Morgan Rogers, he Tuchel loves him as, I suppose, uh an alternative to Bellingham, especially for the the way he brings flow to the team. And he has just had a better season than Gibbs-White. Then Eberechi Eze has been a transformative player with so many key moments for the English champions and is seen as great around the squad. Personality has been a big thing in this. I think it actually is seen as part of the decision-making as regards um Palmer and Maguire. Uh not necessarily there's any issue with them or the two guys have any major issue.
Maybe kind of little elements of their personality, especially in 7 weeks away, how they respond to certain football decisions, I think from what I'm told it's factored into some of the decision-making. And with Maguire, I suppose, there's a lot of discussion today, obviously, that his statement after the game uh vindicates uh this decision for Tuchel, offered unintentional vindication for Tuchel's decision.
Um and as good as he is as many qualities he offer you wouldn't say at this point of his career those qualities are indispensable even if defense is still a little thin England still lack that passer to maintain possession which could be key in the heat but also means that two goals has to find other solutions and I think this squad does offer a lot it is more classic tournament ball in the Gareth Southgate way but I think it's a necessary in a tournament like this and so I'm I'm heading in now to see what two goals actual explanations are and no doubt he'll have some interesting to say he always does but for the moment I think some of it is actually more self-explanatory and understandable than maybe some of the headlines or some of the debate with the headlines of faster see in a bit.
