[00:00:15]>> On July 29th, 1910 in Sloum, Texas, a thriving black community was suddenly targeted by armed white mobs moving through the area.

[00:00:27]So this was a whole community just living their life. Yeah. Building wealth, owning land, and that made them a target.

[00:00:35]>> Groups of armed men rode through fields, woods, and neighborhoods, opening fire on black residents without warning.

[00:00:43]>> They just started shooting with no warning. No warning, no protection.

[00:00:47]People had to run for their lives instantly.

[00:00:50]>> Panic spread as families tried to run.

[00:00:53]Newspapers at the time reported only a handful of deaths, but historians believe the real number was far higher with bodies left in woods and hidden areas never officially counted. So the real number of people killed, we don't even know exactly. A lot of it was never officially recorded. Black families who owned land, homes, and businesses were forced to flee, leaving everything behind.
