On July 29, 1910, armed white mobs attacked a thriving Black community in Slocum, Texas, killing dozens of residents and forcing survivors to flee with nothing; despite newspaper reports of only a handful of deaths, historians believe the actual death toll was far higher, and for over a century, this event was deliberately ignored and erased from historical memory until it was finally acknowledged in 2016, illustrating how systemic racism and deliberate historical suppression can cause significant events to disappear from collective memory for generations.

“They Destroyed a Black Town… Then Erased It From History 😳” (Slocum Texas) #BlackHistoryAdded:
An entire black community was attacked and for over 100 years almost no one talked about it.
>> Wait, how does something that big just get ignored? Because if nobody talks about it, eventually it disappears from memory.
>> On July 29th, 1910 in Sloum, Texas, a thriving black community was suddenly targeted by armed white mobs moving through the area.
So this was a whole community just living their life. Yeah. Building wealth, owning land, and that made them a target.
>> Groups of armed men rode through fields, woods, and neighborhoods, opening fire on black residents without warning.
>> They just started shooting with no warning. No warning, no protection.
People had to run for their lives instantly.
>> Panic spread as families tried to run.
Newspapers at the time reported only a handful of deaths, but historians believe the real number was far higher with bodies left in woods and hidden areas never officially counted. So the real number of people killed, we don't even know exactly. A lot of it was never officially recorded. Black families who owned land, homes, and businesses were forced to flee, leaving everything behind.
Their property was taken, and justice never came.
>> So, they lost everything and nobody was punished. That's what makes it worse.
The system never held anyone accountable.
>> No one was held accountable. And for over a century, the truth was ignored until 2016.
when it was finally acknowledged.
So, how does something this big disappear for over a century?
>> That's the end of the video.
