Following the 2024 Kiteezi waste slide tragedy, Kampala Capital City Authority is developing a modern sanitary landfill at Buyala, Mpigi District, which receives 200 truckloads of waste daily (80% organic) and generates 2,500 tons of waste citywide; the facility uses marl compaction to prevent slides, with 16 acres of Kiteezi stabilized using the Fukuwaka method and leachate containment pipes funded by Japan, while emphasizing source sorting, recycling, and proper kabera selection for sustainable urban waste management.

Waste Management in the City: A Look at Buyala FacilityAjouté :
Following the waste slide that struck Kitezi dumping site in August 2024, KCCA acquired 230 acres of land in Buyala, Mpigi district for the development of a modern waste management facility.
Buyala currently receives about 200 truckloads of garbage daily, 80% of which is organic waste producing large volumes of leachate. And beyond because our waste facility receives more waste from outside than what we get in Kampala. So, we are encouraging people sort waste at source.
Uh recycle what you can recycle, reuse what you can reuse, reduce what is coming to the landfill, and also refuse things like buveera, things like bottles which you know you are not going to to use. Waste is currently managed by compacting it with marl to prevent excessive heaping that could lead to another waste slide.
We may have all these efforts being put in place. We may have all the funds being put in place to ensure good management of the of the garbage in the city, but without a conversation on how we use this kabera, on which type of kabera we use, we are going to still have a huge problem in managing garbage in the city.
I I think >> Executive director Jennifer Musiki emphasized that excavation works for the sanitary landfills working cell have made significant progress. Musisi, we have gotten the different approvals we needed to start the modern waste management facility.
Uh we are working closely with NEMA to finish our Asia.
So, that place we no longer want to dump traditionally.
We want to have a modern waste management facility. Meanwhile, the first phase of the decommissioning of Kitezi has seen stabilization of 16 acres of the most vulnerable sections out of the 39 acre site using the Fukuwaka method. Suleiman Jezan what have you, and also ensuring that this bad bad water that seep out of this rubbish does not go into our water bodies. With funding of 1 million US dollars from Japan, a network of pipes has been installed making the land safer and potentially reusable. And we believe that if we get our funding as we had hoped, we will be able to rehabilitate this place and it will appear as a different thing all together and the bad memories will be erased from the people. Kampala generates approximately 2,500 tons of waste daily. The authority has urged the public to prioritize waste sorting to ease management.
