Geophysics is the interdisciplinary field that combines geology and physics to study Earth's systems, including how Earth's magnetic field can be measured at the surface to detect underground resources like iron ore deposits, which cause measurable changes in the magnetic field.

So, if you have a big body of iron ore beneath your feet, you can measure the change of the Earth's magnetic field at the surface. There's a biologist, there's a chemist, there's a geologist, there's a physicist. Those are kind of like the main branches, and then within those branches, we have a lot of sub-disciplines. So, when we think of physics, we have astrophysics, [music] particle physics. When we have geology, we can combine geology and chemistry and call it geochemistry. Combine geology and physics and we call it geophysics.
So, in this case, because I'm a geophysicist, what I'm doing is that I'm taking physics and essentially [music] studying the physics of the Earth. I'm looking at how things like physical properties and physics really interacts with Earth system.
>> And when you say Earth systems, what are those?
>> it could be anything that we deal with on a day-to-day life. We walk outside, there's the atmosphere. You feel an earthquake, again, we're talking about the physics. If we start using compass to navigate, the compass is directed from the Earth's magnetic field and that changes over time. Not to mention, if you measure the Earth's magnetic field, it's also affected by things beneath your feet. So, if you have a big body of iron ore beneath your feet, you can measure the change of the Earth's magnetic field at the surface.
