Large Earthquake swarm in the Atlantic Ridge.. EQ activity around Nankai Trough. Thursday Night.
Added:All right, good evening everyone welcome back here to a Thursday night. Little late here on the update but better late than ever. It is 11 just about 11:30 p.m. here California time July 16th, 2026. Latest activity here on the globe shows a little point nine across the California area.
Also got a swarm of activity stirring up out of the blue, literally, out here in the uh southern mid-Atlantic Ridge. Just look at that big time swarm stirring up. Man, that's probably going to get things stirring up across the South America area uh following this activity. Normally, the stresses out here produce uh considerable stress out there along the Peru-Chile Trench, potentially up northward as well. Notice the arrows separating apart here. That's a divergent boundary, separation of the seafloor, and there's quite a bit of activity stirring up there today.
Let's go ahead and zoom in and take a look at that movement uh where there's really uh no major main shock so far. There's quite a few fours and a bunch of fives out there, a bunch of fives. A little unusual to see this much earthquake activity stirring up in a short time period. Again, this is a fracture boundary out there in the oceanic crust.
As you can see, uh quite a few strike-slip boundaries and divergent boundaries out here creating new oceanic crust out here throughout time, obviously. Takes a long time to build up, you know, separate the continents out here like they're doing.
Uh so, watch the South America area.
Also, at the same time, we could see some further activity uh potentially up north here. The general stress model of the South America plate kind of points to the uh north here, so we continue to watch that. Let's go ahead and zoom in here across the uh area of uh Wyoming.
A little bit of activity stirring up here earlier this morning. We're going to double-check the um Yellowstone seismograph stations here and see what we got. See if anything stirred up since uh earlier the earlier activity.
Now, there was a decent uh little event over here.
Little 3.3 3.33.
All right, there's my numbers again. If you guys know If you guys know, you know. If you don't, you don't.
3.33 6 uh kilometers deep here. We're going to check out the seismograph stations and see what we got. There's that 3.33.
Um it looks as though hard to say if this is thunderstorm activity earlier because there's a lot of thunderstorm activity that's been firing up. This is around the 6:00 to 7:00 time period.
And uh the way to check this is to verify a couple other seismograph stations.
Yeah, that almost looks like it's thunderstorm activity. I'm I'm just going to double-check this, okay? Just to make sure because I don't want to say it's earthquake activity when in fact it may not be. So, we're going to go over here to um We can go back here to the weather radar. And I I can already see here. If we can go back to last 6 hours.
Um let's go back here about There Oh, yeah. You can tell that there's a lot of thunderstorm activity out there earlier this afternoon.
So, that's the noise that we're seeing there across Yellowstone. A lot of thunder, a lot of lightning. Look at that. All throughout Yellowstone right there. So, that's exactly what's taking place here on the seismograph stations.
Um earlier uh this evening, but there was some earthquake activity out there earlier this morning here.
Uh but since then, things have uh dropped off.
Uh let's see here. One earthquake into the Cascadia. A very shallow earthquake up there in the Cascadia fold and thrust belt as this thing continues to fold in on itself and build the next mega quake out there across the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. A little 1.4.
Uh we are going to double-check the tremor counts here where uh the majority are way up north tonight.
109 epicenters again at the extreme northern end of the Vancouver Island ranges. So, been a little rare. We haven't seen a whole lot of activity up here in the northern end recently, but that's starting to fill in. The extreme of these, the uh the extreme ends are starting to fill in. And we've seen a lot of activity out here. Let's go back and look at the uh last uh Here's the last week. We can go back and look at the last month and this will give us a good indicator of of where the stress is building. And I think you'll be surprised. It's uh mainly uh across the southern end here, but we've seen a more recent uh events up here across the northern end.
So, that's pretty impressive number, 7,000 and 65 tremor counts there across the entirety of the Cascadia, but the majority again down here across southern end.
Uh so, a little worried about that, watching that.
Always potential to see a partial rupture here across the Cascadia southern end.
Nothing big going on there for now, but uh again, be on guard.
Couple earthquakes here on the Rogers Creek fault. Hello.
That's associated with the Hayward fault down south.
1.6 and a 1.6.
Over the last 30 days, couple smaller earthquakes out there in the vicinity of the Rogers Creek fault.
San Francisco area, man, I tell you what, I I just don't know.
I just don't know what's going on out there. It's very quiet and it's unusually quiet to say the least. We've seen a couple smaller earthquakes out here in the last 7 days or so, but these are um you know, very small micro quakes and there's only been a s- a small amount recorded out there.
So, be on guard across the Bay Area.
That's a little interesting.
Couple small earthquakes there through the creeping section, the southern portion of the state. Uh not Well, actually we do have one earthquake there on the San Andreas Fault near Banning.
Little 2.5, 11 miles deep here.
Looks like that may be associated here with the San Andreas Fault Zone, the San Bernardino Mountain section. So, there's quite a few fractures out here. This is a major fracture area. A major zone between the Pacific and the North American plate where there's you know, there you got the main plate boundary, but there's other stresses that play out here. And any of these regions can see a bigger earthquake.
Oil Field to Texas, still rocking and rolling, nothing new. There's that little explosion there. I I was looking at that and there's no official notice yet on that 3.9 from the Navy. So, they haven't put out a notice, but the explosions that are happening out here off the coast of Florida are very similar to what has happened in the years past uh far as Navy underwater explosions go.
So, they're testing the they're testing things off the coast there of of of Florida.
But, we'll wait for the official notification here in the days ahead.
Hopefully, they put out one tomorrow.
South America relatively quiet, same for the Middle America Trench. Couple earthquakes up north around Mexico.
Uh Alaska, a lot of older activity here.
It's been pretty active in the last couple days, but looks like things are starting to take a little break. Things starting to pick back up here across Japan and the Nankai Trough here, 5.2 at section A of the Nankai Trough.
Uh things starting to light up out here.
Also, a swarm.
Yeah, I don't know if I'd call it a swarm. We got two earthquakes there on the Manila Trench, 3.0 and a 3.2. Things starting to increase out here across this area of the planet as notable, right? Look at that. It's very noticeable that we're getting an increase of movement out here. So, we do have to be on guard.
Big uptick here across the Burma area, uh some fives and fours.
That's going to be up around this region here. So, things uh stirring up this evening. Nothing big, but uh increasing movement producing increasing earthquakes out here.
Stress produces further activity.
Uh New Zealand down here, number of aftershocks.
Some activity in between here. I'm watching this area closely because uh we we seen a 5.0 earthquake here.
Let me go back to the USGS map here.
Uh earlier this morning and then uh a couple hours later, actually 1 hour later here, that less than 1 hour. So, that's only about 15 or 20 minutes or so. The pressure quickly transferred down south here for a 5.9 from this 5.0 earlier this morning. Uh I'm a little bit concerned with this area right here, the Alpine Fault northward. It does have some potential for a larger earthquake, also the Hikurangi Subduction Zone.
It's been uh relatively quiet out there across New Zealand recently. You look at the last 30 days of activity uh far as anything major goes, you know, even any moderate activity, it's been relatively light aside from the increasing movement today. So, do you have to watch that plate boundary? It's a major region where stress is building up right now.
All right, Mediterranean area pretty quiet. Yeah, there's just there's a a lot of interesting movement happening out here, but it comes and goes. You know, the cycle out here comes and goes and it's uh it uh can really kick up in various areas out here. Right now, the main regions it looks like across the Burma area down across New Zealand.
Uh California quiet for now, but we'll see. And the Atlantic Ocean out here.
Let's go ahead and check in on the space weather department, see if anything's cooking out here on the sun. I don't think there is. I mean, look at the solar wind speed right now, 383. Whoa.
That's not very high.
And the B4.4 X-ray flux chart, that's very minimal in terms of solar flux out here. So, we continue to go down. And that will be the story here until we get these active regions out there on the far side.
They are getting closer.
They're uh approaching the eastern limb rather quickly. We'll see those in the days ahead. And then I'll think we'll see a a little uptick there of uh space weather activity.
No major roars in the forecast. Flare threat remains a very low.
1% or less for a 1% or less for an X-flare. M-flare 15% chance.
C-flare at 60.
And again, uh nothing major going on. No major coronal holes. One out here, number 80 and 79. That's a fairly lengthy, but very slim coronal hole out here covering a good portion of the sun.
We'll watch that though in the days ahead.
Uh for the Friday outlook, for your Friday for start of the severe weather or start of the weekend here, weather limited across the green areas. Tornado threat mainly up north. I don't see anything down south here. That's a little little 2% chance. Little bit of wind and a little bit of hail, but no major severe weather outbreak uh is forecasted out there for your Friday.
Uh this is for the day on Saturday. Big old slight risk out here. So, let's see what we got.
Uh in increasing chance there for some tornado activity in the the brown or burnt red color out here.
Things increasing across that area far as tornado threat goes.
Uh, some big time wind.
Not so much hail. So, tornado and wind threat out there for your Saturday. So, just be on guard.
There's quite the population density out there. 39 million people across the uh, 30% zone. So, just be on guard.
