In 1947, deep in the heart of Texas, a group of writers kept a promise alive.
They founded the San Antonio Charro Association, the first US chapter ever licensed by Mexico's Federation of Charreada. While the [music] world was changing after World War II, these Mexican-Americans were preserving something older tradition, pageantry, [music] and pride on horseback. Because Charreada was never just a sport. It was fathers teaching sons how to sit tall in the [music] saddle, mothers stitching traje de charro suits by hand. On the south side of San Antonio, they built their own ranch and arena, where the crack of the reata against the air echoed like a reminder we are still here.
