Director Martin Scorsese is renowned for his deep knowledge of film noir and classic cinema, which he draws from watching old movies and TCM films; this expertise enables him to guide actors through demanding physical transformations, such as shaving beards and cutting hair, to authentically portray characters in challenging roles like those in Shutter Island's mental institution setting.

RADIOMAN x JAMES ENGLISH | Working with Martin Scorsese on Shutter IslandAjouté :
What's Martin Scorsese? Is he like, Marty's one of a kind. Yeah, there's no one like him. He's just like different than any other director you ever could ever meet. He is the quintessential director of our films. He knows everything about film noir. He gets all of his knowledge from different old movies and stuff like TCM movies. He watches all of those different films of cinema.
>> And he's a regular, "Hey, Ray, how you doing, man? How are you?"
>> [laughter] >> "I want to see what I got to put you in this movie, but you got to get rid of your beard and your hair and all that.
Are you willing to do that?" I go, "Yeah, Marty, no problem." All right, get him ready. And that was on Shutter Island where they put me in a crazy mental house outside it. We shot in Medford, Massachusetts and we dressed up an old real psychiatric center. We dressed it up with flowers and everything in the courtyard and I was in 1950s. Leo was in it. Mark Ruffalo and me and some other people. Max von Sydow, you know, from The Exorcist was also in it and Ben Kingsley. Great film, great film. And then the ending leave you up in the air. You don't know what it's all about. It was a good movie though. And I did that and I had shackles on my feet and handcuffs. No hair, shaved everything off. I had a pair of garden shears and I'm in the garden over there.
I look at Leo with a menacing look and Marty captured that on film. Right close up, pan me. It was great. What we call in the business, panning.
