Moldova serves as a critical test case for European democratic resilience and regional security, as it balances between European integration and decades of Russian influence through energy, media, economics, and politics, with the Transnistria breakaway region and 1,500 Russian troops stationed there since the 1990s representing a persistent geopolitical challenge that illustrates how modern conflicts can begin with hybrid tactics like disinformation campaigns, election interference, and energy pressure rather than traditional military action.

Why Moldova Matters to EuropeHinzugefügt:
Driving from the airport into Chisinau, [music] things look calm and absolutely normal. But this small country is one of the places where Europe's future is quietly being tested. Moldova is balancing between closer integration with Europe and decades of Russian influence tied to energy, media, economics, and politics.
And then there's Transnistria. It's a breakaway region internationally recognized as part of Moldova, but controlled separately since the early 1990s after a war that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Russian troops are still stationed there more than 30 years later.
The situation is evolving again. Russia has made it easier for people in Transnistria to obtain Russian citizenship and passports. And critics worry that expanding the number of Russian citizens inside the region creates political leverage and reinforces Moscow's narrative of needing to protect Russians abroad. A justification that's been seen elsewhere, and Moldova has already become a test case for modern political pressure. During the country's recent elections, Moldovan officials and international observers warned about disinformation campaigns, alleged vote-buying networks, cyber activity, and foreign influence operations linked to Russia. Despite that pressure, pro-European leadership retained power helped in large by diaspora voters abroad. And this is why Moldova matters far beyond its size.
Ukraine changed the security logic of Europe. Countries once seen on the periphery are now central, strategically important.
Modern conflict doesn't always begin with tanks. Sometimes it starts with pressure on energy systems, online narratives, corruption networks, election interference, or attempts to weaken trust inside democratic societies.
Moldova is now one of the places testing whether democratic resilience can survive that kind of pressure in real time.
I'm Dr. K and I'm looking at how countries around the Black Sea are creating alliances for better security as geopolitics is being [music] redefined.
