Matt’s meticulous analysis elevates K-pop from mere entertainment to a subject of serious musicological study. It is a refreshing reminder that mainstream success and technical complexity can coexist beautifully.

Old Man Ranks (G)I-DLE (여자)아이들 - "MAZE" | Music Analysis & RankingAdded:
[music] >> Hello, welcome to the channel or welcome back to the channel, whichever may be the case for you.
My name is Matt.
As you can now see on the screen, I am clearly an old man. And I do enjoy ranking things, especially K-pop discographies. That's what I've dedicated this whole YouTube channel to.
These days is ranking K-pop discographies and I really enjoy uh (G)I-DLE or / I-DLE as they're now known.
I love everything that I've heard from them so far. Um sometimes, as a musical snob that I am, I wish there were a few more chords or a few more differences in the way that pre-courses or uh verses were marked as opposed to courses.
Uh however, I think that uh Soyeon, who I believe is the producer for most tracks, uh does a pretty good job at marking it in other ways, not with chord progression, but with the kinds of instruments that are being used and the types of melodies that are being used.
Uh and a lot of this stuff has been very exciting. All of these uh members, including Soojin, who I don't have pictured above me, um but uh they all have beautiful voices. Soojin actually reminds me a little bit of Joy uh from Red Velvet uh in having that really clear sweet tone.
Uh but I uh really enjoy all of them. I think Yuqi is a super powerful performer.
Uh I think Minnie and Miyeon just soar uh and do all kinds of crazy vocal acrobatics all the time. Um I think uh is Shuhua just uh doesn't get enough lines, but uh anytime she gets one, she absolutely nails it. And Soyeon, without a doubt, is one of the best rappers in K-pop, maybe ever.
Um male or female, in my opinion. Uh although I haven't listened to a whole lot of K-pop rappers, but I mean, I put her and Moonbyul of MAMAMOO kind of up in the same uh range. Um they're both very exciting when they do when they do flows.
And um and if Soyeon is also the genius producer behind a lot of this stuff, then who how could you not really respect Soyeon?
Um At any rate, uh we're ranking all of (G)I-DLE's discography. That includes uh solos, OSTs, all those kinds of things will be included in this ranking.
You may not find all of them in the YouTube channel here. You may have to go to my Patreon to see some of them.
Uh the link is in the description below, but anything related to (G)I-DLE or any K-pop group that I do where I'm ranking it is a free post. You do not have to become a paid member to see them.
So, uh please uh check that out if you wish. And we've already ranked DALLA and LATATA.
Uh I don't know how controversial my ranking of DALLA above LATATA was for you.
Uh let's see if Maze makes my rankings even more controversial.
Uh that's what we're doing next, Maze.
Off the I am mini.
All right, I'll be using a lyric video, which I will have linked in the description, and I also I will have the original audio on the I-DLE YouTube channel linked in the description as well. Please give everybody their proper love, likes, subscriptions, comments, et cetera.
And I uh I'm looking forward to this.
I um I don't know what to expect. This is This will be a first time hearing for me, so I'll actually be reacting to it as well as ranking it. Uh when I do review videos, uh I sometimes play into this thing. Uh even while the video is playing or sometimes I pause uh so that I can internalize the chords myself by playing them.
Uh and I also talk over the videos and I sometimes pause the videos well either to play in this or to offer comments.
And if that's not your style, hey, I totally get it. That's no problem. I understand if you leave now, but I thank you for at least giving the video a shot up to this point. Here we go with Maze.
>> [music] >> Uh nice guitar.
I put chords over my head, too, see?
>> [music] >> Oh, that's a big sound.
I love that >> [music] >> pumping synth sound.
Oh, break it back down for the first verse. Nicely done.
Okay, Soojin.
>> [music] >> All right, Shuhua.
>> [music] >> Oh.
>> [music] [music] >> Yuqi.
That's powerful.
>> [music] >> Okay, so all the whole time, it's just been the same chord progression, like a G minor uh to a B flat add nine over B.
Except that this note is in the bass. I just don't have that note on this thing.
Um to an E flat major seven.
Uh and then I love this little move, the the C minor to uh F uh or you can think of it like an F9sus to an F.
Uh that the guitar is doing. It's just placing the bar or the probably the fourth finger over the bar.
Uh wherever they have the chord barred.
Beautiful guitar sound, beautiful synth sound, beautiful vocals. Yuqi, you just killed it, man.
Oh, yeah. Sorry. Also, um whoever this person is, they must really be into them if they're feeling like they're getting trapped in a maze with them.
Is that a good thing?
Or is it a bad thing? We'll find out.
>> [music] [music] >> Oh.
Chord progression hasn't changed.
But the vocals are so great.
Miyeon.
All right, Soojin.
>> [music] >> Do do do do do do do do do do do do do.
Those kind of intervals are really hard, but then when you stack these kinds of vocals on them, uh those three and four part harmonies sound wonderful.
I don't I don't know how Soyeon produces this stuff. Does she make the vocalists harmonize themselves or does she make all of the other members harmonize with whoever's got the lead? Um it sounded like a bunch of Miyeons uh to me, but I could be wrong. This group is still relatively new to me, so let me know in the comments below, uh Neverland.
>> [music] [music] >> Man, I love the way this composition breathes.
Adding synths, taking synths away.
>> [singing] [music] [singing] [music] >> Soyeon, one of the best rappers ever.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Also, uh let me just say I apologize if I'm mispronouncing any of these names. I think it's Minnie, uh Shuhua, right?
Um Miyeon, Yuqi, Soyeon.
I hope that I'm pronouncing that one right because she's the one that I fear the most. Uh and Soojin. Is that correct? Uh let me know in the comments below uh because I want to learn. I really do. Uh so you will be very helpful to me if you do that.
>> [music] >> That. Say that synth up a dub dub.
The block chords on that are so incredible. Uh the block block chord harmonies what or or even close harmonies where a bunch of notes are kind of clustered together.
Uh those kinds of harmonies always get me.
Cuz they're so hard to do live. Um and I would imagine that most K-pop groups probably use um backing tracks to create those vocal harmonies and just let the do whatever member is singing the line uh just kind of shine on their own. Uh but they still had to be set up at some point. They still had to be done at some point and that's really hard to do.
Uh so done a respect.
Breaking it down.
Oh, they added a legato piano to it. piano to [music] it.
And now a drum build up, nice.
Whoever produces, and I [screaming] assume it's Soyeon, really knows what they're doing.
Okay, I know lots of groups use vocal chops.
And I love that they put the the almost like a megaphone effect on on that particular vocal chop. But do they do their own vocal chops and then just pitch them down, or do they use samples?
Those of you who know how Soyeon produces things, please let me know in the comments.
>> [music] >> Yeah.
>> [music] >> Oh, ooh, yeah. [music] And Yena's so powerful here.
You're Now you're in my maze. Ah, they they flipped the table. Nice.
>> [music] >> Ah.
>> [music] >> That was wonderful. I love the way it flipped. Um, that's that's kind of the kind of powerful message that this group normally sends, right? Almost everything that I listen to, their lyrics are very powerful, self-empowering.
Um and I love that because for at least the first half of the song it seemed like that they were lost.
But now suddenly they are found and uh whoever they're digging is lost. So, I like that.
Very cool. Let's rank this thing.
Obviously, there's not a whole lot of drama in ranking G-Idle yet because we just have two songs and they're breaking our third one.
But I do wonder if Neverland's going to be a little bit uh controvert if there's going to be a little bit of controversy with Neverland as I rank this one higher than the prior two.
Uh I think the production on this one is superior. I think the vocal performances are so powerful. And I really like the lyrics, the way it's like, you know, you basically you kind of getting the idea that uh maybe uh they're letting somebody that they care about control them. But in truth, at the end you find out, nah, they're in control, as they've always been.
Uh that really got me. I really like that. So, Maze is my current number one.
Next time around we're going to be doing Don't Text Me.
Don't forget that I also have extra G-Idle content on my Patreon.
Uh anytime I'm doing a ranking and eventually you'll get to a video here where all of a sudden you'll see a whole bunch of new tunes and you'll say, "How did all those tunes get there?" They'll be in a ranking post on Patreon. Those ranking posts are always free. You never have to join as a paid member to see the ranking posts. And uh I enjoy doing them. Uh but there are some things that I just won't be able to get up on YouTube and so that's why I do them there on Patreon. So, come by. Become part of our community.
Um not necessarily a paid member even, just uh check out the free posts.
And thanks so much for watching this time. If you want to leave a like or if you want to subscribe, nobody around here is going to shun you for that. See you next time when we do uh Don't Text Me. Well, that sounds like an ultimatum.
We'll see.
Bye.
