Weather alerts use specific terminology to communicate risk levels: a 'watch' means conditions are favorable for severe weather and people should be prepared, while a 'warning' indicates that severe weather is imminent or occurring and immediate action is required. During severe weather events, authorities issue flash flood warnings when heavy rainfall threatens flooding, and severe thunderstorm warnings when dangerous conditions like high winds, hail, or tornadoes are expected. Residents should take protective measures when under warnings, such as avoiding travel and staying indoors, while watches require only preparedness.

Flood watches, warnings in effect for parts of New York and New Jersey
Added:Welcome back on this first alert weather day. Tony Sedikou back in the immersive studio with the first alert forecast and more on those storms that are starting to move in. Tony.
>> Yeah, Jessica, and everything so far is verified according to plan. It's It's not one of those days where you want to be caught without an umbrella. I mean, if you're trying to make that mad dash, you are getting drenched Rainfall has been efficient, to say the least. That's why those flood alerts have been triggered. Here's some of the reports coming in from our weather watchers, and they've been impressive.
1.52 big number from Bruce in Armonk.
He's got active rain and a flash flood warning that's still in effect for a couple hours there. Greg in Peekskill is already clocking over an inch and up uh from Tony up in Uline, he's got uh closing in on about an inch, too. As far as the temperatures go, kind of an interesting contrast in the numbers. Low 70s to the north, which is remarkable for late July, right? Should be in the mid-80s. Some of you are there, so a lot warmer to the south where you haven't seen as much activity, but guess what?
It's also more humid. Significantly more humid than we felt yesterday, but to the south, too, where dew points are in the mid-70s. I mean, moisture is not missing, and because of that, we're seeing some very torrential downpours.
Continues to be the threat here within the next couple of hours. There's a live look at the city right now, and of course, the uh Chevy Chopper. Want to take you through the situation right now because we do have some active alerts I want to pass along to you. We talked about this earlier. Flash flood warning, that's the blue polygon. That includes parts of Westchester and Fairfield.
Remember, when you're under warning, that means it's time to take action. We passed along the watch, that's be ready.
We know the atmosphere is going to be, you know, primed for, you know, flooding downpours. But you're under a warning, you kind of want to avoid travel if you can, and uh Justin Lewis has been doing great job passing along these and making sure you've got the alert as soon as they pop up. So, right now, the the worst of it uh We also have a severe thunderstorm, by the way, in parts of uh Fairfield.
Flashes of lightning there. I mean, if you're trying to navigate through this, it is it is just torrential blinding rain with plenty of lightning. Uh purchase, you're in Rye Brook, you're over in Stamford and New Canaan, Norwalk, Darien, Bridgeport, really all of Fairfield County getting clobbered there. Not so much happening in the city so far, but there's a lot more to come to the west. So, this is you know, this is rounds of this we expect and you could see how all of this is activity is flaring to the west and of course we'll be waiting on the front later on. So, it's a multiple hazard first alert weather day right through this afternoon and evening. Remember, severe means the potential for winds to 60, hail, as well as the tornado threat. I've seen some storms show some signs of rotation, but again, the wind energy, the momentum that could knock down trees, produce some damage, that's the primary concern as well as the flash flooding threat.
Still going to be touch and go in the next couple of hours. You see how the future cast is going to be colorful. So, keep checking in with us. The team will be all over it. Lanie and Scott will have updates as well throughout this afternoon. This is a look at the picture towards the evening drive, early evening hours. There will be more storms to be had and this is where those of you who have not been included so far could get in on some nasty storms, the type that could produce vicious winds, 1 2 plus inch rainfall rates, the type that you know, the MTA is concerned about, could produce flooding in and around our city.
So, we'll have to watch out for that.
Make sure that you've got ways to get alerts and of course we'll pass those alerts on to you. Probably 6 to 9 p.m.
the window of the worst through the city. Watch out for the lightning threat. Stay indoors. Lesser storms tomorrow, isolated chance, and then we are in the clear Thursday through the weekend. The weather looks great. That's your first alert forecast. We're back after this.
