A habit is something you do regularly and automatically without thinking too much because it becomes part of your daily routine, and habits can be either good (like exercising, reading, or drinking water) or bad (like being late or using phones before sleep); a routine is a group of habits done in the same order every day, and changing habits is easier when starting with small, incremental changes rather than trying to change everything at once.

How to Talk About Good Habits in English | English Conversation PracticeHinzugefügt:
[music] >> Hello everyone. Welcome back to Emma English daily. Today we will practice simple English and talk about our daily habits. Hi everyone. We are very happy to see you you again.
Please subscribe and like our videos because it really helps our channel.
Today's topic is habits and routines. We will talk about things we do every day and how we spend our mornings.
Yes, and it is a beautiful sunny day today. I walked here from home and I saw many people enjoying the park.
That sounds nice. I walked here too and I usually listen to pop music while I walk because it makes me feel relaxed and happy.
I like pop music too, but sometimes in the morning I listen to the news because I want to know what is happening around the world. That is actually a very good habit. After today's recording, what are you planning to do?
I think I will go to a small cafe, drink a hot cup of coffee, and eat a delicious piece of cake. That sounds wonderful and of course I want to come with you. You are always welcome my friend.
Now let's start talking more about habits. For me, a habit is something we do again and again without thinking too much because it becomes part of our daily routine. Exactly. For example, I always brush my teeth after breakfast because it is a normal part of my morning.
My healthy habit is drinking a big glass of water every morning right after I wake up. That is a very good idea and maybe I should start doing that, too.
So, Jack, what is the first thing you do after you wake up in the morning?
The first thing I do is check my phone to see the time and read my messages, even though I know it is not the best habit. I do the same thing sometimes, but experts say too much phone light in the morning is not very good for our eyes. That is true, but I also have one good habit because I always make my bed before I leave my room. I think that is great because a clean and tidy bed makes the whole room look better and more organized.
What about breakfast? Do you usually eat the same thing every morning? Not always. Sometimes I eat yogurt and fruit, and sometimes I eat cereal, but I always drink coffee because I cannot start my day without it.
My breakfast is usually simple because I often eat toast with butter and drink a hot cup of tea every morning.
Jack, how many cups of coffee do you drink every day because I think you drink a lot more coffee than most people.
Honestly, I usually drink two or three cups every day and sometimes even more when I feel very tired at work. That sounds like a strong coffee habit, but everyone has at least one habit they want to change.
How do you usually travel to work?
I normally walk to work because my office is close to my home and walking helps me feel fresh and relaxed in the morning. That is a wonderful habit because walking is healthy, simple, and completely free. I usually take the bus to work, but on Fridays I often drive my car.
Why do you drive only on Fridays instead of every day? Because after work on Friday, I usually go to the supermarket and buy many things for the next week.
So, using the car is much easier.
That makes perfect sense, and it sounds like a very useful weekly routine. At work, I always make a list of my tasks because it helps me stay organized during the day. That is a great habit because organized people usually work better and faster.
But I sometimes lose my list after writing it.
Another bad habit, Emma.
My bad habit is being late for meetings because I always think I still have plenty of time.
You should try arriving a few minutes early because it makes work much less stressful and more comfortable.
I know you are right, but waking up earlier and arriving early feels very difficult for me. After work, what do you usually do?
After work, I often feel tired, so I sit quietly on my sofa for a few minutes and relax before doing anything else.
That actually sounds peaceful and relaxing. After resting, do you do any exercise? Yes, I usually go to the gym where I run on the treadmill, lift small weights, and then go back home to cook dinner.
I am impressed because I almost never go to the gym. Most of my exercise is just walking to places during the day.
Even small exercise is better than nothing, but regular exercise is important for staying healthy and active.
Do you cook dinner every night?
Not every night because sometimes I feel lazy, so I order food a few times every week instead of cooking at home.
Ordering food is convenient, but home cooking is usually healthier and also saves money in the long run.
You are right, but cooking only for myself sometimes feels boring and takes too much time.
I understand that feeling. So, sometimes I cook a large amount of food and eat the same meal again the next day.
That is actually a smart and practical habit. After dinner, what do you normally do at home?
I always wash the dishes immediately because I dislike seeing a messy kitchen before I go to sleep.
I have the opposite habit because I often leave the dishes in the sink and wash them the next morning instead. That is definitely not a very good habit, Jack. After that, how do you usually relax at night?
I normally watch TV series, funny comedy movies, or sports because they help me relax after a busy day. I enjoy watching comedies, too, because laughing helps me feel happy and less stressed before bedtime.
Sometimes I also watch documentaries about animals because they are interesting and relaxing at the same time.
Before I go to sleep, I always follow follow the same routine because it helps me relax and sleep better at night.
What do you usually do before bedtime?
First, I brush my teeth, and then I read a book for about 15 minutes because reading makes me feel calm and peaceful.
That is a very healthy habit. I also like reading before sleep because it helps my mind slow down after a busy day. What kind of books do you usually read at night?
I mostly read novels and funny stories, but sometimes I make the mistake of checking my phone while lying in bed.
That is a bad habit many people have because the bright phone light can make sleeping more difficult. You are right and I think we should both try to stop using our phones before sleep. Okay, let's make a promise that tonight we will not use our phones in bed before sleeping.
I can promise for one night, but changing habits completely will take more time and practice. That is true because habits are not always easy to change.
Are your weekend habits different from your weekday habits? Yes, my weekends are completely different because on Saturdays I usually sleep very late and enjoy relaxing in bed.
What time do you normally wake up on weekends?
Sometimes I wake up at 10:00 in the morning and sometimes even at 11:00 because weekends are my time to rest.
That sounds relaxing, but I still wake up around 8:00 even on weekends because my body is used to that routine.
8:00 on a Saturday morning feels much too early for me, but everyone has different habits. What do you usually do after waking up? I like having a slow and peaceful morning where I drink coffee, read the news, and enjoy the quiet atmosphere.
That sounds very calm and relaxing.
On Saturdays, I usually meet my friends for lunch at a small restaurant near the park. That sounds fun, especially when you can spend time talking and relaxing with good friends.
Do you play any sports on weekends?
Sometimes I play football with my friends because it is good exercise, but I do not play every weekend.
At least you still do some physical activity, which is important for staying healthy.
What about Sundays?
Sunday is usually my cleaning day because I like to clean my apartment, wash my clothes, and organize everything for the next week. You are very organized because I only clean my apartment when it becomes too messy, which is probably every 2 weeks.
Well, that is also a habit, even if it is not the best one. Everyone has both good habits and bad habits. That is true, and nobody is perfect. One of my bad habits is losing my sunglasses all the time.
How many pairs of sunglasses have you lost this year?
Probably five or six pairs, which is honestly very expensive and frustrating.
That really is an expensive habit.
My expensive habit is buying coffee from coffee shops almost every day instead of making it at home. You already have a coffee machine at home, so you could save a lot of money by using it more often.
I know, but coffee from a coffee shop tastes so good that it is difficult to stop buying it.
Changing habits is difficult, but it becomes easier if we start with very small changes in instead of trying to change everything at once.
That sounds like smart advice because small steps feel easier and less stressful.
For examples, if someone wants to exercise more, they can start by walking for just 5 minutes every day.
And if someone wants to drink more water, they can simply put a glass of water on the table every morning as a reminder. Exactly, because small daily actions slowly become normal habits over time.
I think I can do that, and maybe I can also start reading one or two pages of a book every night before sleep. That is a wonderful idea, and I can see that you are already becoming more motivated.
What new healthy habit would you like to start next?
I want to start eating fruit every single day because I usually eat cookies and snacks, but fresh fruit is much healthier for me.
That is an excellent and healthy idea because you can easily eat a banana while drinking your morning coffee every day.
Yes, starting with one banana sounds simple and possible for me. What new habit would you like to start, Emma? I want to start calling my family more often because I usually send text messages, but hearing someone's voice feels warmer and more personal.
That is a beautiful habit, and I think your family will feel very happy every time you call them.
Do you still have any habits from childhood? That is a beautiful habit, and I think your family will feel very happy every time you call them.
Do you still have any habits from childhood?
That is funny because I also have a strange habit from childhood.
I always read the last page of a book before I start reading the whole story.
Really? That is such an unusual habit because most people want the ending to stay a surprise. I know, but I like knowing how the story ends before I begin reading the book. My sister has a funny habit, too, because she sings loudly every time she drives her car.
I actually do the same thing because singing in the car makes driving more fun and relaxing. So habits can be healthy, funny, useful, expensive, or even strange depending on the person.
And the good thing is that people can change their habits slowly if they really want to improve themselves.
Exactly, because small changes are usually easier to continue every day.
Exactly, because small changes are usually easier to continue every day.
Now I feel motivated because tomorrow I will eat fruit, drink more water, and stop using my phone in bed before sleeping. That sounds like a wonderful plan, and next week we should check if we successfully kept our new habits.
Perfect. Now let's review some important vocabulary words from today's conversation so everyone can remember them more easily. That is a great idea because repetition helps people learn new English words faster and better.
The most important word today is probably the word habit because we used it many times in our discussion. A habit is something you do regularly and automatically without thinking too much because it becomes part of your normal routine. For example, drinking tea every morning is one of my habits because I do it naturally every single day. Exactly.
Some habits are good habits like exercising, reading, or drinking water while other habits are bad habits like biting your nails or forgetting your keys.
So, habits can be positive or negative depending on whether they help your life or create problems.
Another important word we use today today is always, which means something happens 100% of the time. For example, I always lock my door before leaving home because I never want to forget. The opposite of always is never, which means something does not happen at all. For example, I never skip breakfast because I feel hungry very quickly in the morning.
We also use softer words like usually, which means something happens most of the time but not every single time.
So, if I say I usually take the bus to work, it means that the bus is my normal choice, but sometimes I may walk or drive instead. Exactly. Another useful word is often, which means something happens many times but less regularly than usually.
For example, I often meet my friends on weekends because we like spending time together, but we do not meet every single weekend.
Sometimes I eat sweet food when I want a little treat or dessert after dinner.
Now, let's talk about the word routine because it is another very useful word for daily English conversations. A routine is a group of habits that you do in the same order every day.
For example, my morning routine starts when I wake up, brush my teeth, make my bed, drink tea, and sometimes read the news before work. That is a great example because a routine is really just many habits connected together in a sequence.
My evening routine is usually simple because I cook dinner, relax by watching TV, and then read a book before going to sleep. So, a habit is one action, but a routine is many habits done one after another. Exactly. We also talked about healthy and unhealthy habits today.
Healthy habits are good for your body and mind, like exercising regularly, eating vegetables, and drinking enough water every day. Unhealthy habits are bad for your health, like smoking, eating too much sugar, or sleeping very late every night.
>> [snorts] >> Everyone should try making simple sentences with these useful words to practice speaking English more naturally. For example, you can say, "My healthy habit is walking every morning."
Or, "My unhealthy habit is eating too much fast food." Today, we learned many useful words, like habit, routine, always, never, usually, often, and sometimes.
These words are very important because they help people talk clearly about daily life and everyday activities.
Using these words often is also a very good habit for English learners.
We really talked a lot about habits today, and now my mouth feels tired from speaking so much.
That is not a bad thing because talking a lot is actually a great habit for English teachers and language learners.
Before we finish, let's do a quick summary of everything we discussed today. First, we learned that a habit is something people do regularly without thinking too much about it. Habits can be good or bad.
We talked about morning habits like brushing teeth, making the bed, and drinking tea or coffee before work.
We also discussed work habits like making a to-do list, staying organized, or sometimes being late for meetings.
Then we talked about evening habits like cooking dinner, watching television, relaxing, and reading before sleep. We also learned about weekly habits like shopping at the supermarket or cleaning the house every Sunday. Finally, we practiced useful words like always for something that happens every time, and never for something that does not happen at all. We also used words like usually, often, and sometimes to describe things that happen with different frequencies in daily life.
For example, I sometimes eat chocolate after dinner when I want something sweet, but I do not eat it every day.
We also talked about the word routine, which is like always like the full story of your daily habits from morning until night.
And we learned the difference between healthy habits and unhealthy habits like exercising regularly or drinking too much coffee every day.
Speaking of coffee, maybe this week you can try making coffee at home instead of buying it from a coffee shop.
That is a good idea, and this week I really want to change that expensive habit little by little.
I will also try to stop looking at my phone before sleeping because I know it is not good for rest or sleep. That is an important lesson for everyone because people can change their habits by starting with one small and simple step.
Trying to change everything at once is very difficult, so it is better to focus on one easy habit first. For example, you can start by eating one piece of fruit every day or drinking one glass of water every morning. Or you can read one page of a book every night because small actions can slowly become strong and healthy habits. Now it is your turn to practice English with us because we want to hear about your habits, too. Today's question is very simple.
What is one good habit you already have and what is one bad habit you want to change?
You can write something like, "My good habit is studying English every day." or "My bad habit is watching too much television at night."
Every answer is welcome because learning English is about practice, improvement, and confidence, not perfection. We enjoy reading your comments because it helps us see your progress and your hard work in learning English.
