Yeah, what is your history with uh 1993's Bette Midler classic Hocus Pocus? What's your history with with Bette Midler?
>> [laughter] >> With the Divine Miss M? Cuz ooh, I read that.
>> [laughter] >> I read that. No, I didn't know she went by the name the Divine Miss M, which by the way is the I don't know. I I guess you would say Miss Midler. Like that's what you would say, right? So, Miss M is correct, but it's weird.
The Divine Miss M. Yeah. Is I mean, am I wrong in saying that it's horrible?
William, she's an icon.
She's up there. Why?
>> [laughter] >> I don't want to be mean. She's a belter.
She's got personality for days. Oh, yeah. She could take it down [laughter] a notch. And then and then quit belting.
No, this woman's this woman's a broad.
Yeah. She's out there. Did you notice that she was first billed above anything? The way this movie starts is it says Bette Midler, then we have a beat, Hocus Pocus. Oh, wait. Really? It went Midler movie and then everyone else?
Whoa. That's crazy to me.
I think so.
Huh. I think it's unusual. I don't know if my knowledge Well, I was going to say, there's there's an order that those opening titles are supposed to happen and it usually ends on director. Right. I I can't remember where the actual title of a thing comes. I think it usually does come first or dead last. I've had to put them together and there's like a like there's an order that people expect.
I don't remember that order. But I do not think that Midler movie and then the rest of it is the way it's supposed to go.
Yeah.
Bette Midler, Hocus Pocus. Yeah, that is weird. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, and then everything else.
She is a diva in every sense of the word.
Brassy. Very brassy. And my understanding is demanding.
Oh, I couldn't tell.

>> [laughter] >> What's my history with Bette Midler?
You asked. I wonder if anybody at home can guess. I do not like the Divine Miss M. I find her to be annoying.
I don't like her voice. I don't [laughter] like her attitude.
I think that she comes off as rude to me and obnoxious.
>> [laughter] >> I saw her on Seinfeld where the gag was that she was controlling.
Then inexplicably inexplicably she sings a song on Seinfeld and I don't think I think that she insisted she sing a song. I think you're right. It is uncomfortable and like Kramer is like enjoying Bette Midler singing to him or something. And it's just like Yeah, the fictional [laughter] the fictional theme song.
I know. [laughter] It's been a long journey from Milan to Minsk.
What's the next line? Do you know it?
Yeah, I didn't know what that meant.
That I was as a kid I was always like We grew up when you couldn't fast forward TV, but I was always just kind of like skip this [ __ ] I need a 15 seconds forward button on my TV remote control for my Magnavox. I couldn't stand her.
>> [laughter] >> And to bleed into my history with Hocus Pocus then, I found this movie as a kid and for my whole life to be intensely annoying.
Right. Like repellently annoying. We talked about doing it for Ween-O-Hall here in part because I find it super annoy It's so Halloweeny, obviously. I mean, it's it's so It's spoiler free. Yeah, it's it takes place in Salem, Massachusetts. It's about witches from the 1600s brought back to life in 1993. Like it is perfect Halloween stuff.
But I was a kid when we saw this movie.
It came out in '93. I You were 10. I would've been seven. I hated [laughter] this [ __ ] I hated it. I hated looking at it. It made me It made me cry.
I don't know if we saw it in theaters.
I do. We'll we'll get into it.
I I found this movie to be upsetting and disturbing. Yeah.
And the Divine Miss M is a big part of my problem. And there's also Kathy Najimy. I don't want to let her off the hook entirely.
All right, so I'm on the absolute opposite side [laughter] of the spectrum. Yeah. I love Midler. I love Najimy. I love Parker. This is a powerhouse. Talk about a trinity, a holy trinity. Incredible work. The unholy trinity.
Yes. Wow. So, when you pray at night, you pray to Midler?
>> [laughter] >> No, I pray to Najimy, actually. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Najimy, Midler, >> [laughter] >> and Sarah Jessica.
Are you crossing yourself?
>> [laughter] >> Instead of Father, Son, and House of Gucci.
Najimy, [laughter] Midler, Jessica. That was so irritating. Is Gaga on the sequel? I feel like she would be well-placed to be in Hocus Pocus 2.
And the the the threatened the threatened Hocus Pocus 3. It seems like that's in the crapper at this point.
No, I love Hocus Pocus. It has lots of problems. I can't believe this is a kids movie. Like what's going on here? Why so much virgin talk?
This movie is crazy.
This is a weird movie.
It's so weird. But I loved it then, I love it now. I have no recollection of when I saw it or anything. I I don't I don't know if we saw it in theaters. I have no idea.
I I don't know. I just feel like it's always been there. It has.
That feels it to me.
>> [laughter] >> I It's funny that like I know that Hocus Pocus part of the thing of this movie is that like when it first when it came out, at the time people were not hot on it. Right. Like it got like bad reviews.
But then over the course of these last 30 years, it has been lifted up as an icon of Halloween.
And every year, at least once a year around Halloween, I like to go to Spirit of Halloween.
And then I regret going in.
But the last few years in particular, I feel like when I go in, there's an entire section just dedicated to Hocus Pocus.
Especially huge in the last handful of years. And I don't really know what did that. Is it just our generation growing up and now showing it to like the next generation down and so Yeah, I think it's just time sometimes does this. But so I know that this is a beloved movie and so I obviously was pumped to watch it for Ween-O-Hall.
Cuz I knew Cuz I knew I was going to I knew I I knew I'd have some problems with it. And that's why I'm shocked to tell you that I enjoyed it and I recommend it.
Wonderful.
That's an [laughter] excellent heel turn. Wow, I didn't see that coming.
Surprising experience for me.
I think I became a man. I think this is growing up. I I enjoyed I enjoyed my time with Hocus Pocus.
So, are you turned around? Okay, so you're You're not turned around on Midler, of course. What's going on with Najimy?
Okay, here is the more shocking development.
I am prepared to make friends with the Divine Miss M.
In this movie. I can't speak to I can't speak to anything else. I still don't like her rendition of Rochelle, Rochelle. That feels shoehorned into Seinfeld so that she can sing. I got to tell you, I don't like that either cuz I know that that's what's happening and I don't care for that.
She was like, well, I've got to sing.
You got me here. Why wouldn't I sing?"
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's just like, "Okay, jeez." I mean, I just >> We've already got one problem child, Kramer. We don't need two.
>> [laughter] >> All right? I do like her in the rest of the episode, though. I do not.
>> Um but I thought in this movie, I think that this is like the absolute perfect application. Yeah, because her character of Winifred Sanderson, >> Mhm. she's supposed to be annoying, and she's supposed to be like kind of repellent and weird and off-kilter. Like I I think that like uh just about perfect.
>> Yeah. With with almost 40-year-old eyes, just about perfect.
>> Yeah.
>> Um Sarah Jessica Parker as a young man, Mhm. um I was very confused by her.
>> Yeah, yeah.
>> Cuz there's like a sensuality they play into with her, and at 7, I was not prepared to understand, and I found her disturbing.
>> Well, it ain't right.
Yeah, something's wrong, right? Yeah.
>> Um as a grown man, I still I'm just kind of like some it's fine. I don't know what's going on with her, but like She wants to play with all the boys. It's not good.
>> Yeah, something There was There was something that was like very uncomfortable as a child, and as an adult, I'm just like >> good.
>> This is not Yeah. working or something.
And that um as a as a young man looking at Kathy Najimy, Mhm. I thought she was funny.
Yeah. Right? Like that the goofy the goofy lip she'd make.
>> Oh, Winnie. Winnie.
>> [laughter] >> Like just like being like, yeah.
Uh as an adult man, uh can't stand her.
>> [laughter] >> The total flip-flop. Total flip-flop.
Absolutely cannot stand Mary Sanderson.
>> ire has transferred >> Yes. from Midler to Najimy.
>> Yes. Interesting.
>> Yes, I don't need Najimy. Yeah, yeah.
Okay. Okay. It's still progress. I mean, by by the time of our next yearly our next yearly watch, just privately, of Hocus Pocus for our personal Weeno Hall, maybe you'll have developed in your feelings.
>> for [laughter] me. I don't think I think this might be my last go-around with Hocus Pocus. Okay.
>> Now, it's possible that the kids will get older and have some they'll become Hocus Pocus curious, Yeah.
>> and I might be willing to to go along with that, but as of right now, I have no plans to ever watch this again in the rest of my life.
I think I had a positive experience with it. Let's leave it at that.

>> Having said that, I am very Hocus Pocus 2 curious. Yeah, that This is interesting now. I know. Yeah.

>> Thank you. Um something else I would like to say in spoiler-free that jumped out at me. Now, not a not a huge deal, but I was just like, does anybody else feel this way? Okay, the guy who played Ice, one of the bullies.
>> Yeah. Did you think he looked like Matthew Perry at all? No, I thought he looked like David Koechner.
>> [laughter] >> Okay, I can see that, too.
>> Yeah. Yeah. [laughter] What? Matthew Perry? He was like very slim. Yeah.
Often, anyway.
>> Yeah, mhm. I What Why Why do you Why do you ask? [laughter] Bec- because I did, clearly. Why else would I be asking? Oh, but why is that important? It's I Bec- It can be in spoiler-free.
>> [laughter] >> I was going to bring it up at some point. I may as well bring it up in here. The bullies, so yeah, it's these this this kid Max moves from LA to Salem, Massachusetts, and cuz he's [clears throat] the new kid there, these bullies that pick on him, and he's like not really quite fitting in at school.
He hates it there. He wants to go home, but there's like a cute girl that he likes, Allison. He's got a little sister, Dani, who is like, "Get over it, Max. Like we live here now. Like this is your home now, whatever." And it turns out that in Salem, Massachusetts, there's this very old witches' cottage that has a black flame candle inside.
Kicks ass. And it has been prophesied that if a virgin >> Mhm. lights the black flame candle, the Sanderson sisters will come back to life. These Salem witches from the 1600s. Yeah. He doesn't take it seriously. He lights the black flame candle. Uh-oh, he's a virgin. Yep. He's never had sex before.
>> [laughter] >> That's from Conan. Yeah.
And uh the the witches do come back.
It's all true. Yes. And then the whole thing is that the Sandersons, hey, they've only got tonight to be back, or they will turn to dust in the morning, unless they can suck the vitality out of a child, and then they will be able to live beyond these 24 hours or whatever.
Yes. And so they want they want Dani, Mhm. the little sister, and so Max has got to try to Yeah. protect her. That's the the the And and you get plenty of fish out of water here. Oh, yeah. You get a little dose of sleeping ho- sleep sleeping hollow. Sleeping hollow. Yeah, Sleepy Hollow, the TV show from Fox in the 2000s, because they're like, "Oh my god, what is this black river?"
But it's asphalt. Right, yeah, it's a road. Yeah, stuff like that.
>> all stupid. They don't understand. They don't know what a bus is. Yeah, yeah.
People from the 1600s don't know what a bus is. What a bunch of losers. It's very embarrassing.
>> Yeah, it's very very much like Ichabod Crane being confused by jeans. Yeah.
Yeah, and Munchkins.
>> These infernal breeches! They're constricting! Yeah.
Being like, "What are these tiny round cakes? Oh, they're divine when eating Munchkins." Why, Mr. Franklin had a patent for these tiny round cakes.
Right, right. It kicks ass.
>> Yeah. Um it's a great movie. I also recommend it, obviously. And um we're going to get into the spoilers of Hocus Pocus after this commercial break.
Time for those spoilers.
>> Oh, yeah. Three, two, one, she's an old woman. She would eat you for saying that. She would.
She'd be pissed. But she was made young again.
Was Yes.
>> Somewhat. She was older in the beginning.
>> That is true. And then she was made young. I In in watching that cold open, which does take place in the 1600s, >> Yeah. so you get young Thackery Binx.
Thackery. Yeah, I know Thackery.
Thackery. Everyone had such a crush on this guy. Oh, really?
>> all loved Thackery Binx. I As a society.
>> [laughter] >> Uh I've never seen more 90s boys in the 1600s.
>> Totally, totally. What was going on in the 90s, man, with that I know. that What What do you call this? The JTT >> Yeah. Honestly, that's like the best shorthand for it, cuz it's not quite a bowl cut, cuz it's longer. It's kind of a bowl cut, right? Yeah, JTT longer bowl cut. But it's like a a middle part >> kind of a middle part hair with two waves. It makes like the McDonald's M >> on a boy's head of hair. Oh, yeah. And this was, I feel like Leonardo DiCaprio had this.
>> Yeah.
Um Link in Ocarina of Time had this. Uh um >> Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil 2 had this.
>> Okay. And everyone was based on like the same You know like they say like >> Yeah. Boy, God made God broke the mold Right. when he made you. No, he just used the same mold.
>> the same mold on every TV boy. Yes.
>> Anyone who appeared on a screen in the 90s had to have this hair. It was like mandated.
>> Yes. But so these 90s boys in the 1600s are like, "What does What do What do thine eyes see What does What do What do thine eyes see over there?" Yeah. And their voices don't quite work. Like there's something just like too soft and weird.
>> Totally. Well, also, they dubbed that kid's voice. Like the they the >> Thackery Binx. Right. The person who does the voice for the cat later on does the voice for the human Thackery Binx.
So it's like it doesn't match up.
>> No, I Yeah, I guess his voice wasn't any good.
>> I don't know what the deal was there.
>> doing a bad job doing the old English, or maybe he was too LA or something.
>> Maybe. Yeah. What do thine eyes see over there? [laughter] Right, right.
>> Thou foul witches, conjuring a brew?
Like, all right. We like the look. We need a different voice for Thackery Binx.
>> Yeah, yeah, which is very funny. He is rushing, cuz his little sister Emily is being devoured >> Yes.
>> by the witches. And I this movie doesn't hold back.
Mhm. The So I would >> In no way. No. So you were 10. I would say you were probably better placed to make sense of this, cuz character kids die. Oh, yeah.
>> Children die in this, and like a cat dies, and there's like yeah, violence and body parts, and >> It's too much. It's too much for the Now, I have already recommended it, so I don't mean this in the in as like a true pejorative, but like the movie comes off like a Disney Junior Mhm. quality sometimes.
>> Yeah, yeah.
>> Like it does it does feel like it's being like Three Stooges for like little little kids. Yeah. But then it will be like we need we >> We need dead man's toe for the potion.
Okay, well, that's witch witchy, whatever. We need to spit in the potion.
We need to put a dead man's toe in the potion. But then they bring out a box of severed toes.
>> yeah. That is where I feel like it's like pushes it to being uncomfortable.
>> No, it's weird. The tone is strange, because it is made for kids, but then it does have this gnarly stuff in it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
>> But I think that's part of what makes it great, too, and maybe is part of what makes it such a cult classic, because so many kids' things, I think, by the way, appropriately, don't have all that kind of stuff in it.
And obviously we do a our ton of our audience or I would I would imagine most of our audience does. We like a little bit too much. Like we like horror stuff.
We like scary stuff. And so for a lot of us it was probably like, "Ooh, I I like this too muchness, you know?" But from an adult perspective it is like, "Should kids be seeing this? I don't know."
>> Well, I also think it's kind of awesome that we got to see it.
>> You're like threading a needle. Mhm.
Because I think that anyone over anyone over 20 Yeah. might look at Kathy and Jimmy and be like, "She's doing like comedy for babies."
>> Uh-huh, yeah. Right? And then anybody I think I think you might have been in the sweet spot. I think at seven, I don't know what seven-year-olds are like yet.
I don't know if I I don't know if I was being immature or weak or whatever, but I was freaked out by this movie.
>> Yeah. So I you've got like a >> It's freaky. You've got a very thin window where I think it is someone's sweet spot. And then very broad windows where people are like, "This is for little kids." and little kids being like, "This is way too scary for me."
Oh, yeah. So I yeah, I don't know what you do with it. I just tell tell your story and let it land where it may and obviously became an icon, so it all worked out.
>> Right, right.
>> But yeah, that that box of toes was like my first like [laughter] They literally have a warning sign. Like if you jokingly go like dead man's toe and then you just hear a splash, you don't think about it, but when you see toes rolling around in a box, it makes your brain start going, "So they've been chopping people's They've got like body parts."
>> Yes.
Yeah, just an apothecary of different body parts.
>> Yes. Yep.
>> And Thackery Binx shows up too late to save his little sister. Mhm. And the witches end up making her drink this potion and then her aura sort of blooms like weird 90s effect like just like a little shimmery aura around her and they Yeah.
>> sip that out of the air. Yes. Which is cool. It's awesome, but of course it's disturbing.
>> weird.
>> Yeah, it's creepy. And then they become slightly younger. And they have a good joke too where they're like We're young.
Yeah. Younger. Right. It's not a bad joke. Yeah, totally. Um also I think everything looks great. I love the look of old Salem. Yes.
>> Does anything look better? Hardly anything looks better than this. Like this old Salem village.
Tell me something that looks better than that. These outdoor shots of old Salem.
Yeah, no. Listen, I I agree with you. I like that.
>> Looks incredible.
>> the creeping vines. Yeah, pink smoke is coming out of their chimney. Yeah. Looks great. You go into their little house.
Oh my god, there's a bubbling cauldron with like neon green in it.
This looks fabulous. I and I really want to give them So apparently, if you look online at all, so it was written by Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert and directed by Kenny Ortega. I think it was Neil Cuthbert, I want to say, who was like "Yeah, I would just walk around with my kids and we saw a black cat."
Uh-huh. And I just started we just started telling stories about like who this black cat is and oh it used to be a boy who was transformed into a cat. And like basically it it came from telling stories to his kids and just having fun.
>> Yeah. And then he was like, "This is actually pretty good. I'm going to write this down."
>> Yeah. And I love [clears throat] that. I feel like you can like sense that that this is almost like just like a a fairy tale for kids. And I think it totally works cuz Yeah. So Thackery Binx fails to save his sister. Yep. And then in trying to defeat the witches, they get a hold of him instead and use their witchcraft. And I wrote down some of their spells >> Yeah. cuz I feel like spells are at risk to come across as the shittiest thing in a movie.
Bad rhymes, bad word choice, or just like impossible cadence or something. I think the spells in this movie are awesome.
>> Oh, yeah. And it plays on the fact that there are three witches. Like this one at least does. So uh uh the Divine Miss M >> Mhm. uh is looking at Thackery Binx and says "Twist the bones and bend the back." And then you get this chorus of Kathy and Jimmy and Sarah Michelle Sarah Jessica Parker.
>> Sarah Jessica Parker. Who's Sarah Michelle? Sarah Michelle Gellar? Yeah, yeah, maybe that's what I was doing.
They go "Itchy da cop-it-a-mel-a-ka mystical, trim him of his baby fat. Itchy da cop-it-a-mel-a-ka mystical, give him fur as as black as black just like this." And they all three collaborate on a spell.
>> Don't you think it should be just like that? It would go better with black as black.
Just like that. Yeah, yeah, you're right. Mhm. Okay. That's always bothered me. Really?
>> Yeah. Yeah, I think you're right about that. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah, I wanted to compliment the spells, but you're right they suck.
>> No, but the rest of it is excellent.
>> You're right. Yeah. Uh but they get caught. Yeah.
>> They get caught almost right away by the the villagers.
>> Yeah. And they're going to be hanged.
>> Yeah. So they all have nooses around their necks standing on barrels. Mhm.
But they have they're they have magic. So they're not really worried about being executed.
>> Right, she what's her name? Winnie who's the Divine Miss M can call to her book.
Oh, I hate that.
>> It flips open and then she casts the spell that allows them to come back when that virgin lights the black flame candle. So that's the loophole.
>> want to read the spell that she Sure. I I have it written down too, but my ungodly book I'm not going to do it.
My ungodly book speaks to you. On All Hallows' Eve when the moon is round, a virgin will sum us from summon us from under the ground.
Oh oh, we shall be back and the lives of all the children of Salem will be mine.
And then they all they all cackle. I think that's good too. It is good. I like that. I don't know why it needs to be a virgin.
Yeah, I don't I don't know.
>> into that and then it becomes such a big deal. Yeah, totally. But it is like extraneous. Why couldn't it just be like a child of 10 plus five?
>> Yeah, right. You know? I think I think purely because they want to have the gag of being like, "He's a virgin."
>> Yeah, right.
>> Which good good for you, Max Dennison. You're like 15 or something. That's okay.
>> fine.
>> This movie denigrates Right.
>> virginal boys >> Yeah, they keep people >> teens. People keep like side-eyeing that he's a virgin. They're like, "Did a virgin light the black flame flame candle?" He's like, "Yes, fine. I'm a virgin, okay?" And it's like, "That's pretty normal." That is perfectly >> Are the rest of you not virgins? Right, right. Like is What's going on in Salem?
>> Is that so weird? It's not so weird.
>> Pretty boy from California is a virgin here in Salem. Right.
>> None of us are. Right, right.
>> It's not It's really not that unusual.
>> Why is the movie doing that?
>> I don't know.
>> Oh, I completely agree. I think it's nuts all the virgin talk. It's nuts.
They should have you know what? It should have been like I even this would not age very well, but if it was just like um [snorts] uh a young girl will light the candle and then he lights it and it works and they're like, "What?"
Uh-huh. And he's like, "I'm not a girl, okay?" That would at least be very 90s.
>> Yeah, yeah.
>> virgin thing I think is at least just too like Totally.
>> very weird. Yes. Why even inject like the notion of having sex or not having sex? Just leave sex out of it entirely.
>> Couldn't agree more. It's crazy.
>> again, I think this movie is like trapped between tones. Sometimes it feels like Power Rangers.
>> Mhm. And then sometimes it feels like it's trying to go for like a Ghostbusters kind of Uh-huh.
>> like slightly more cynical Yeah. adult energy. Oh, I guess when you get to Garry Marshall and Penny Marshall Bizarre.
Absolutely bizarre.
>> What's going on there? I don't understand why the hell they're playing a married couple.
>> So this is >> famous brother and sister duo.
Uh it's so weird. I am so confused >> Yeah. by that scene. Yeah. The the witches when they are finally back, it's it happens way later in the movie, but like they're back and they're confused about Halloween or whatever and they're like Kathy and Jimmy is going like "I smell children, but I don't see any.
Where are the children?" Cuz cuz they're all in costumes. So she doesn't understand where the children are. And then they Yeah, she's constantly smelling children. I know, that's also like gross. The constant smelling of children. Um but yeah, then they see Garry Marshall dressed as the devil. So does that mean all of the costumes throughout time they've been correct?
>> They've been accurate.
>> the devil looks like.
>> looks like.
>> Basically wearing red long johns Yeah.
and then little horns and a tail and holding you know, like the pitchfork.
>> pitchfork. Yeah, yeah. So they see him and they're like, "Master." or whatever.
[clears throat] And they go into the house, you know, he >> Why do they go into the house? Why does he invite these three women into his home?
>> I don't know. I don't know. Salem has like a in this movie like a small town vibe. Everybody's like going into each other's houses for like a full on party and like staying for a while. They're not just like trick or treating like Allison's house. They're having like a full party that you go into and stay.
>> a Marie Antoinette >> Yeah. Yeah. bash Right.
>> gala. Yeah. Right, the the mood is just different there.
>> It's very weird.
>> And yeah, it's so weird. They go in and they're partying. Sarah Jessica Parker dances with him. And then they later realize like this guy isn't the devil.
He's a charlatan or whatever, but But his wife >> is played by his real life sister.
>> Yes, it's so weird.
>> And she's offended that he is like dancing with Sarah Jessica Parker.
>> Right, right. And she's like, "That's it. Out of my house. Out of my house."
And she's like, "My husband is is uh flirting with these women.
>> Right, right.
>> My brother husband." I don't know why they did this. If they wanted to have Garry and Penny Marshall in the movie, look, God bless.
>> [laughter] >> Was there no other way?
There has to be one.
Who yeah, who >> like if I sat for a few minutes with pen to paper, I could figure out a better way. Oh, yeah. I I don't even need a few minutes. You're just need a couple of minutes.
>> Yes. My sister's just having a go. My sister's visiting from out of state. She doesn't understand what it's like here.
>> Right. And boom. I just be like, "Okay, his sister's staying with him. They're not married to each other. And we know who they are. Like they're cameos. It's so strange.
>> is we know who these people are in real life.
>> Yes. Yes.
>> Why in God's name are they married here?
>> they're famously brother and sister.
Same. It's crazy.
>> Inexplicable. This movie is diseased. So yes, it is.
>> ways. I again. Yes. I I love it. No, I I love it. But no, it is diseased. It's insane. The whole virgin thing is crazy.
That's crazy. It's gross. Like I don't know what they were thinking. And yet I do love it.
>> Yeah. Um something that uh it's a small thing, but that I loved about it. It's very early on. When we first meet Max and Allison, two of the leads, they're in a classroom and we're just getting out of the flashback to the Sanderson sisters in the 1600s. And it's the teacher and it's Halloween. Uh the teacher is like talking about them to the class.
>> Yeah, the cold open was a lesson she was giving them about history of Salem. I love I love that. I do too. And she's got like she's dressed up a little bit.
She has a witch hat on and stuff. And Max is pushing back somehow and being like, "Huh, sounds like a bunch of hocus pocus." Actually says that later I think. Anyway. [laughter] That's every line he says. Yeah. Yeah.
But um he clearly is like, "I don't believe that." Whatever. And she's like, "Oh, I'm sorry you don't believe in Mr. Laid-back California tie-dye dude." or whatever. And I like that the teacher in Salem is like annoyed that he doesn't believe the witchcraft. Like the teachers Yes.
>> "Witches and ghosts are real. And and this rules.
>> Yeah, totally.
>> fact that you're not super into Halloween makes you alien to us.
>> Yes. And I, the teacher, will now bully you.
>> Yes. I love [laughter] that. That the teacher is like, "You don't believe in the Sanderson sisters and the legend that they'll come back. You are wrong. I am the teacher and I'm teaching you you're wrong about this."
>> all a good clean legend. I have to say.
I think that this all works. I don't think it's overwrought in the ways that sometimes things are. I don't think it's underbaked the way it could have been.
It's it's just a tidy thing. These witches were executed 300 years ago and they were threatened that they'd come back someday. Boom. Yep.
And it feels like a real-life legend in some ways. Yep. But then there are these bullies that are like, "Hey Hollywood.
I like your cross trainers." Yeah.
>> sneakers and they call them cross trainers. And they steal his shoes.
>> I know. He's got a crush on Allison. I know, so mean. Yeah. But then his little sister says, "You're going to take me trick-or-treating tonight."
>> Mhm. Max. And he doesn't want to. But then they "Fine, I'll take you out." And they run into the bullies again and Yeah. They go to Allison's house where yeah, they're having this big Marie Antoinette party. And then this gets into our next problematic moment of the movie. Oh yeah, totally. Dani, who's played by Thora Birch. And by the way, who I think is fabulous in this movie.
>> She's wonderful.
>> She's a little kid. A little little kid.
And I like I believe her. Mhm. She's a good actress. That it's >> She's great.
>> And she's great when they get into the the cat stuff cuz the uh Zachary Binx was transformed into a cat >> Yep.
>> 300 years ago and he's still alive today watching over the house preventing virgins from lighting the black flame candle. But she has ends up having a like a relationship with this cat that I thought was >> No, it's so sweet.
>> fantastic.
>> Yes, I thought so too. But why oh why did they give her the lines to say at Allison's house? I don't know. She says that I don't remember exactly how we got here. But she said that Max really likes yabos and he loves your yabos. Isn't that right, Max? Or something like that?
Or right something like that. She's like, "What do you call them, Max? Yabos?"
>> even worse than that. It's even worse than that. They go to Allison's house and she Thora young girl Thora Birch. I don't know, five or six? I don't know. I think she's probably a little older than that.
>> have to be.
Seven or eight. Oh, yeah. She goes, "Oh, I love your costume. I couldn't wear anything like that."
>> that's right. That's right.
I, little girl, Yes. Yes. couldn't wear anything like your costume, Allison, because I don't have What do you call them, Max? Yabos? Yeah, right. Max loves your yabos. Yes.
Uh Allison really lets this this roll off.
Like what?
>> Get out of my house.
>> Yes. What are you talking about?
I don't know how long they've lived there or anything either.
She really rolls with the punches.
What's going on? I don't know. Virgins and yabos and something's wrong.
>> good. These things aren't good.
>> [ __ ] happen in Hocus Pocus, too? No. Did you see Hocus Pocus 2?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. I I don't really remember what I think I was just like, "Okay." I think I liked it like fine. You know, it's like just a nostalgia thing if I remember correctly. Yeah. Yeah, fair enough.
>> Don't not a >> I I don't I don't think any of this is present in Hocus Pocus 2. God, that's crazy. Oh, it's nuts. That's crazy [ __ ] >> Yeah. Absolutely nuts.
>> But it's from here that now these three are their own tight-knit unit.
>> Yeah. Young girl Dani, her big brother Max, and the girl with the yabos he loves.
>> to disregard that apparently Max has been talking about her yabos to his little sister.
>> Well, don't forget that Dani was hiding in his closet at home.
>> [laughter] >> And he This is too. He lies down in his own bed >> Yeah.
>> and starts snuggling a pillow. Yeah. And going, "Oh, Allison." And like kissing his own pillow.
>> I know. I know.
Yeah.
>> is that? No, it it shouldn't be happening in this movie.
>> is that, Kristen? Explain it.
>> I I can't. I I don't see why we couldn't just lift all of these elements right out.
>> I I think that it would behoove them to think, "Am I alluding to the Let's Let's just say romantic lives of children. Am I doing that? And should I maybe not? Yes, I should not. Maybe I won't."
I think they could have done that and yet they didn't.
>> the '90s. We loved them, but they were diseased.
>> Oh yeah, absolutely. Yeah. No, something was wrong. Um do you know that when Ali and I first started dating and uh uh uh she was she was like over at the house or something and Dad used to sing all the time in the morning.
And uh he would say he was he was born in 1934. So he knew all this like super old culture stuff.
>> Yeah. And so uh I remember there were more than a few times where he would sing this one song and I'd be like, "I wonder what Ali thinks of this."
>> Uh-huh. Cuz he he would sing this song that was like, "I'll kiss my pillow >> [laughter] >> and dream it's you."
You just like hear that through the walls cuz he had this big booming voice.
>> Yeah. And I was just like, "That's so old."
>> Yeah, totally.
>> But like what a crazy I don't know what that song is. I have no idea what that song is if I have the lyrics right, the anything right. Uh yeah. Uh-huh. You heard that? Yeah. And sing that. So it's just like at what point in time was it not embarrassing >> to kiss your pillow?
>> And to sing about it.
>> [laughter] >> I don't know how often people were To Dad's credit, he just heard that on the radio as a kid or something and it stuck or it was it was intended to be a romantic song or whatever the hell, but I wonder if it's more of kind of like an idea of kissing your pillow. Like I don't know if people are really like really doing that. Yeah. It's almost more of just like a metaphor that the the pillow is a stand-in for for a person. Besides those I think Japanese pillows or whatever.
Um With the body pillow.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Remember on 30 Rock when >> That's what I'm thinking of. Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> When she did that thing. Is it James It's not James Marsden, is it?

Man. Okay. Oh god. So uh we got to uh we're going to we're going to summon the witches now. They go to the Sanderson house where there is a book, the witches book, which is bound in human flesh.
Yeah. Very Necronomicon.
>> Oh yeah, totally.
>> And it has an eyeball that can open.
>> Ryan got me a little journal that looks like this. I think that thing is awesome.
>> awesome.
>> I love a weird little book. That that thing is great. And the eye can look around and stuff.
Um Max jokes about lighting the black flame candle and a black cat jumps on him to stop him. Yeah. And that's Binx who's been alive for 300 years now. Yep.
Uh but he lights the black flame candle anyway and boom, the Sanderson sisters are alive. They come walking into the house.
>> Instantly. Instantly. Yeah. And they walk right in the front door and they smell children and >> Yeah. Of course.
>> And then we're pretty much off and running. I love that the the Sanderson sisters house has been turned into a museum. That's also fun. They're able to go to it.
>> Scream 7. Yes, it is.
>> [laughter] >> I'm going to burn it all down.
Um they were able to go to it because Allison's parents used to run the Sanderson sisters museum. And uh Max is like, "Well, let's go check it out." or whatever. So they go and there are little like, you know, there's like a little um like turning thing by I guess a register or something that has um novelty lighters and stuff like that on it. Like you don't see a >> Oh, that's where he got it. Okay. Cuz he uses a lighter. Yeah.
>> Right. Like you don't see like a ton of the details of like what the museum is like. The the book that Winnie used is under glass now. Um but I love the idea that it's now a museum.
>> Yes. Yes. We went but we took the kids again to um that little historic village cuz they did their like yearly opening thing. So we went back and I I love walking around those little Yeah. those little historical houses that have been Yeah. tried they tried to preserve it or recreate the way it looked 300 years ago. Sanderson's house they literally have everything. Oh, yeah. Down to the rat tail that Sarah Jessica Parker hid up in the rafters or favorite rat tail.

>> literal rat tail.
>> have it. Yeah.
It's great.
>> They go to the cemetery and they see and this is where they find out that the cat is Thackery Binx still alive and talk.
>> Mhm. And has the softest oldest voice.
And uh he gives them like a little history lesson in the graveyard which I love. Mhm. And so Billy Butcherson Mhm.
is buried in the graveyard. Um he was Winifred Sanderson the Divine Miss M's boyfriend.
She caught him then macin' with Sarah Jessica Parker.
>> Yes, sporting with her.
>> Sporting with her. Yeah. And uh then the Divine Miss M killed him.
Right. And he's been buried in the cemetery ever after. Died May 1st.
Oh.

Okay. So here's what made me cry about Billy Butcherson. It's later in the movie. I thought this I I was certain that this had to happen earlier.
>> Mhm. That like Billy Butcherson pops out of the grave and Winifred Sanderson tries to say like all right, we can't step foot on hallowed ground in the cemetery so I need a body.
>> Right.
>> I need you Billy Butcherson and I will command you. You go chase the kids. I can't touch this hallowed ground.
>> Yeah. I thought he right away cut the uh the >> Oh. His mouth is sewn shut so I thought he cut his mouth open instantly.
>> Yeah. And then like dust and leaves and moths fly out of his mouth.
>> Yes. Which they really do.
>> I know.
>> Which is insane.
>> to say. And it like took forever because any moisture getting on the moths like in your mouth would make them not fly.
So he had to like walk like have his mouth like you know, way cavernous.
Yeah. It's a whole thing. It's Doug Jones who is like a very very like legendary performer who's usually under a lot of prosthetics. He's the eyeball man from Pan's Labyrinth.
>> Pan's Labyrinth. He's the fish that they make love with in um Shape of Water.
Yeah, that >> Yeah.

And uh he had to wear some >> with? They do.

Uh they put some sort of an apparatus at the back of his throat.

>> And then when he cuts the the the thread off of his lips and opens his mouth and like dust flies out and moths fly out and [ __ ] that is what made me cry.
>> Yeah, yeah.
>> That I get that.
>> was so disturbing >> Yeah. and gross and at seven I guess I was watching that thinking like this is real. I don't know. I didn't think there was a dead guy but I like the cut taking a knife cuz he takes a knife from Max and puts it in his mouth >> Yes. to cut It was just like it was just too intense. It freaked me out.
>> about to say. It's it's very intense.
>> Yeah. How did you feel about his head coming off later? Do you remember?
Um I think I also found that distasteful.
>> [laughter] >> I do think I think that was an issue for me as well but >> Yeah, that's perfectly reasonable. It wasn't until like Saw 4 many years later that I saw someone with their mouth sewn shut ripping it open again. You know, like Yeah. Billy Butcherson was the first. Yeah, he's the blueprint.
Disturbing. Yeah. Now as an adult going back to watch this movie he does their bidding. Mhm. He is trying to chase the kids on their behalf and then just inexplicably later Right.
out of nowhere he pivots and decides to rip his out mouth open. Yeah. And then his first line is to Bette Midler, uh, the Divine Miss M. He goes, "You wench." I also remember him calling her a [ __ ] So, I read that that was what the line was originally.
Um, I don't know if they shot that or not and that's just like I can hear it in my head. This was like, uh, a Mandela effect for me. Right. I don't I don't I literally don't know. I don't know if they shot that and it it used to be in cuts of the movie or not or if it is just a Mandela effects thing. But I know that I read that that was what the line was originally written as. Okay. Yeah, I I feel like maybe they never filmed it or whatever.
In my in my memory that's what he said.
And like I think it was also that aggression. I think it was I think it was I think it was the whole thing. I think it was the cutting the stitches on his mouth, dust and leaves and [ __ ] coming out, and then him calling her a wench or in in my little kid had just the most aggressive >> [snorts] >> thing that you could be saying.
The whole thing was so disturbing to me and that and the fact that once he does that he is it's treated like he's their friend. The little kids the the teenager little girl what I don't he's still scary.
That's still a live wire. Yeah, it is so weird. It's treated from that point as if they have just met the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. Travel with us, Billy Butcherson.
Like the little girl Danny walks up and goes, "Hi, Billy."
And like well, this dude, I don't care if he also doesn't like the witches. The enemy of my enemy is my friend in theory. Sure, but I mean this is still a scary figure on par with the witches I would think. Stay away from that zombie, little girl.
It does work out for them. I mean he helps them, but you know, it yeah. Yeah. He is so it does you know, they put her in the grave so that she can, you know, be encircled in salt.
But she comes out of the grave to help him. He gets his head kicked off and then she leaves the circle of salt to get his head back and that's what enables her to be grabbed by Winifred Sanderson finally. But that's on her.
You know what I mean? If she hadn't done that yeah. I guess my point is, but however, I do still think that they could have just erred on the side of caution and just stayed away. I don't see any reason to have decided like, "Oh, this is a a safe figure for me here. Why?" What tells you that?
Yeah.
And honestly, they really the only thing that made her go after Danny was later in the movie.
Danny calls her ugly. Earlier it was just indiscriminate children. We just need children. But then later Danny says, "You're ugly." and that really gets her. It hurts her feelings. Yes, apparently it does. So so Bette Midler she's on the run after Danny.
She wants Danny which is her undoing.
If she had could have just let that go and just stayed away.
Like during the like the cuz most the middle half of this movie is basically all like a big chase with all the fish out of water stuff of the the Sanderson sisters like them being confused by Halloween and then being like, "I smell children, but where are they?" And then Bette Midler realizing she's like, "All Hallows' Eve 300 year years later has become an evening for frolic."
>> [laughter] >> All annoying and [ __ ] All amazing and [ __ ] Sorry. Amazing.
But like they they do they have a okay. They have an iconic, I think, music performance.
You don't hire Bette Midler and not have her sing.
Again, I would imagine it's a I'm sure they would want to, but I also imagine that it's a condition of hiring Bette Midler. I think so, too.
And I will also say I think this is the single best application of Bette Midler singing I've ever seen.
Interesting. They go to this So, the kids try to run to a big party that all the adults are having which is like a gala. It is like it's not the but here's what's weird. It's not the Marie Antoinette party.
It's a different also huge Halloween party happening in town where everyone is like dress however you want.
Max and Danny's mom is Madonna and their dad is Dracula. Like it's just all like mix and match whatever. And she's cone bra Madonna. Again with the yabos. Yes, the it's a yabo heavy group.
But I'm just like yap boobs are present, you know? And I just don't know that they should be. Yeah, it's surprising.
But so the kids are finally going to the adults to try to get help and they're like, "The Sanderson sisters are back.
No, it's true. Look, they're over there." And then spotlight on the three witches who play it just right.
They know just what to do here. Bette Midler loves a crowd.
And she goes, "Thank you for that introduction, Max."
>> [laughter] >> And everyone giggles like that's funny.
And, uh, then they go up on stage and sing "I Put a Spell on You."
But they're also doing like zabba da gooba da dubba da dubba da.
Cuz they are actually putting a spell on all the adults at this party to make them dance forever.
Yeah, it's awesome. Make them dance yeah. And it takes the adults out of the equation and makes like, "Oh, kids you thought that you could get the adults to help you. No, no, no. There is no help for you here." But also like this won't return until like a gag during the credits that the adults are finally able to dance.
And they kind of are acting like, "Whoo, that was a hell of a party."
But like I do wish now ironically like maybe this wouldn't be right either, but like it would be painful to dance forever.
Like that creepypasta. Yeah, the dancing man. Yeah, hell yeah. I love that creepypasta. But like your feet would be bleeding after a certain amount of time.
Now, I don't want a shot of like Madonna dancing and then you pan down on her her shoes are full of blood or something like that. I don't want that. But like they should not it's weird that this movie concludes with the adults just kind of acting like they're all hung over from like a major blast. It like they should be like in pain or like what was going on out there.
Yeah, they they could have used a little bit of that. I mean they weren't really they weren't actually dancing like that that long. It was like late night into it seems like dawn. Yeah. So, you know, certainly longer than I would want to be dancing. At least I'm going to say four or five hours.
Totally. But that's I've danced for four or five hours.
Yeah.
In my 20s. That's a lot of dancing.
You know, breaks and stuff to like drink more, but yeah. So, but yeah, it's doable. All right, fair enough.
But then their next plan and this I also found disturbing and it's like so brief a thing. They go to the high school.
Yeah.
I don't understand this.
I don't get this. So yeah, they're able to like usher the Sanderson sisters into like a giant like kiln or whatever and burn them and they're like, "All right, all done. We're safe now." Why do the Sanderson sisters come back? Because you see like this kind of smoke stuff like come up out of the high school this like green stuff and you're like, "Okay, great. That's that's them out in the ether." But then there's a shot of it getting sucked back in back down the chimney and into the kiln. Why?
Yeah, there's no there's no reason. It's just that it didn't work for some reason. I found this disturbing as a kid, too, though. The idea that like so [clears throat] they they the whole thing is that that they need the book to make a new potion to like suck life essence and the kids have the book.
So, the kids go to the library and steal a tape that teaches you how to say like "I want my book" in Spanish.
They put a boom box in the kiln playing that tape to lure the sisters into the kiln.
And then they lock them in the kiln and burn them to death. Which is a witchy thing, sure.
We talked about it in one of the episodes. Oh, wow. A trapped Caleb in a kiln. Oh, boy. He started getting weak.
He started fading.
But then Spencer got him out. Thank god.
Thank god for Spencer.
Don't worry. I am working on compiling more stuff for another Pretty Little Liars episode. Don't worry. Now I am worried.

But so if you were in a kiln, you wouldn't you wouldn't burn and disintegrate. Wouldn't you wouldn't you like like desiccate and dry out or something?
You know, green essence wouldn't come up out of a chimney. So, I think that we just need to abandon realism. They treat it like, um, Return of the Living Dead where they put the zombies in the cremation thing, right? And then like the the cremains go up in the sky and then come down as an acid rain and wake [clears throat] up more zombies.
Like uh uh uh, that doesn't make sense for a kiln. No.
No. But But again, to your point like what is it that like all right, so they think that the witches are dead. Okay, cuz there's like yeah, like that smoke shoots out of a chimney or whatever.
Like, "Okay, I guess we burned them to death. I guess there are terrifying dead witch bodies in the high school thumbs up."
And they're going to go relax. They're going to go like lie down and take a nap now, these kids. Cuz it's been a long night. But they are so satisfied that the witches are dead.
They're like, "That was a close one."
And then there's like cute stuff that happens like Thora Birch says to Binks, he's like, "I wanted to do that for 300 years."
And and then and and Binx the cat also says to Max the boy like, "Take care of her. You'll never know how precious your little sister is until you lose her." It's like he had a sister that died 300 years ago to these witches and like, but then Thora Birch has this like very sweet >> adorable.
>> And this is where I'm like, this is what a performance.
>> I totally agree. At this part in particular, I was like, "Look at this sweet girl."
>> me think of Corey Feldman with the Gremlins when he's like he like is like watching Gizmo the Mogwai whistle and sing and [ __ ] in that movie, but he's like, "He's so cute. Look at you. Like look at you little guy." Like there's just like a quality of like child actor to you know, puppet or or fake talking thing, whatever. Yeah. And they're like crushing it.
>> Oh, yeah. Thora Birch says, "You know, Binx, I'll always take care of you. And my children will take care of you, too.
And their children after that. And their children after that forever and ever."
Yeah.
>> And that's like And she says that as she's falling asleep and just like scratching him behind the neck and it's so cute and sweet and good.
>> It's sweet.
>> Yeah, I love it.
>> and it does feel like like a modern fairy tale kind of notion too of just like my entire family will I know.
>> I know cuz he's going to live forever.
>> Yeah, which is a good thing and it's been a curse, but now it can be a good thing with this little girl.

>> so sweet. But then inexplicably, for no reason at all, the green smoke whoops back into the kiln and the witches are back alive.
>> Yep.
>> Don't know. Coincidentally, Max and Allison are snuggling >> Mhm. and decide, "Maybe we could do something to help Binx. Let's open the witches book." Why don't she give it a day?
>> Give it a day.
>> Let's make sure that they're actually gone before you go opening the book. So, they open up the book >> Shouldn't that be the thing that makes the witches whoop back to life? Yes.
Yes, it should be.
But it's not.

>> Yeah. Instead it like lights a beacon.
>> Right. A giant thing of light shoots into the sky. Like they're already alive and they're like, "Oh, how are we going to find the book?" They're like back at their old house or something. And then a giant beacon comes to the sky comes into the sky and they're like, "Ooh, book."
Or whatever.
>> [laughter] >> Oh, hell yeah, book.
>> Yeah. And that's what prompts them to be like, "We need to fly to the book." But all of their all of their what's it called? Brooms were purloined earlier in the night while they were out trick-or-treating with all the children because Halloween is for frolic now.
>> Three kids who were dressed like them.
Yes. Yes.
>> three real brooms.
>> Yes, which is very fun. So, they open the closet in the now Sanderson sisters museum and there are modern-day cleaning implements. There's a you know, modern broom, a mop, and a vacuum. And so, they use these to take to the skies. Kathy Najimy on a vacuum cleaner. Yeah.
Does it get any better? I mean, I don't think so.
Actually, does it get any better? The answer is yes. Kathy Najimy on a Roomba in the sequel. I I I don't even know how to contend with the feelings that I have. I want to see that. Yeah. Yeah.
>> like it was in the trailer for Hocus Pocus 2.
>> It was def it totally probably may have been. It was definitely the poster.
>> Is it one foot on two Roombas? Like is it two Roombas and she has to try to balance between the two?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
I can't tell if they're all doing that or not. I think it's just her.
>> It's got to be just cuz cuz you give you give uh Someone on like a Swiffer or something? I don't remember what's going on. They they get their implements from a Walgreens. Oh, they do?

I yeah [laughter] yeah, I'm I'm really wrestling with the fact that I kind of do want to see it.

I was going to let it go, but now that you like this movie, how could I?

>> Like I think maybe next we know all we'll have the movie and and maybe some extraneous info about these other materials cuz they've tried to bring the witches back in other forms.
>> Yes. Yes. So, um Okay, they do that they take Danny. Mhm.
>> But then they want to take all the children. They go ahead and and pull a weapons. Yeah. Uh Sarah Jessica Parker sings into the night. Wait, you keep saying they want Danny. They don't want Danny like until the end. But no, why do they go Oh, they want the book. That's why they go to the kids now. They go they want the book. And then they just want all the kids in the world.
>> Right. They just need they just need a kid any kid, whatever.
>> Most of the movie they want the book cuz they don't know how to make the potion.
>> Right. But now that they have they steal the book.
>> They only are after Danny in particular like at the end when she calls what's her name? Ugly. Yeah, you're right. So, on their way to finally make the potion, Sarah Jessica Parker needs to summon children now.
>> Right. And she sings, "Come little children, I'll take thee away into a land of enchantment. Come little children, the time's come to play here in my garden of magic."
>> Mhm. Also very witchy. Like like good stuff, but like Yeah. Yeah, I was uncomfortable with the way that she's like singing so softly [laughter] and it's about like murder and stuff. And then all these kids come out of their houses like enchanted and it is like weapons. All these kids are just like >> They're all just kind of like dazed.
Yeah.
>> just like walking the street like zombies.
Um also that part where she's singing that, it's like she's alone in the world for a second the way that they shoot it.
Like she's flying on her broom and the wind is like billowing her cloak and her hair and she like looks all beautiful.
It is like weird for a minute. Oh, totally. Yeah, it's there's like a totally different flavor >> there's a vibe shift.
>> Absolutely. And they >> it.
>> They are making the potion. They have those bullies in two like Hansel and Gretel cages.
>> Yes. Yes, they've captured them. They didn't like their attitudes. The bullies called them like I think again they called them like ugly or something.
>> like being called ugly.
>> They were like out on the street in like Halloween time or something and they called them ugly, so they captured them.
>> Yes. And Sarah Jessica Parker's like spinning them and poking them with a little pitchfork and stuff. Like again, just like pure witchy stuff.
>> Yeah, she has like a a playfulness [snorts] to her. She likes like playing with all the like bad like mostly boys.
She's she's like, "Ooh, a boy. I want to play with him." Or whatever.
>> Yes.
>> There's like a grossness to her. There's something real weird about Sarah Jessica Parker's character. Yeah.
>> watched these Today Show interviews with all of the leads. They were separate with Katherine Couric as she was billed back then, which was funny. And um Sarah Jessica Parker said that she, at least her head cannon was that she was the most evil of the three. That she just had like a basic evilness to her. That she had like this kind of playful vibe, but really like she just had a fundamental like she really like wants to hurt people and stuff.
>> And I was like, "Interesting." I mean, I can see that.
>> I can see it.
>> And also she said I I will say I'm not going to be able to like translate it quite as well. She did say it genuinely like gracefully. She didn't come off like bitter or whatever.
Katie Couric kind of brought it up cuz she must have said something about it before the interview started. She was basically like, "So, again, I'm paraphrasing. She was basically like, "So, you said that you were surprised at how much you were cut out of the movie."
Or something. And Sarah Jessica Parker was like, "Well, yeah, you know, like >> Oh. you never know what's going to happen when the movie's actually made. I had fewer lines and stuff than I expected, but you know, I'm still I'm thrilled with the movie and whatever, but you know, you never you never know." Yeah. I was like, "Interesting."
>> That is interesting. I mean, when all the when the witches are around, I feel like they're all I know.
>> playing relatively I mean, they're everybody's in service of the Divine Miss M.
>> Oh, definitely. Yes.
>> I think that Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker are of equal footing and just behind. I think so. Yeah, so I don't know. I don't know if they originally had >> so much kids. Maybe. Maybe they were going to originally have it be a little bit more like Divine Miss M, Sarah Jessica Parker in second place, and Kathy Najimy in third place or something.
>> Yeah, maybe. Who knows? That's interesting.
>> Um you can definitely feel in these interviews that the Divine Miss M feels that they are behind her. Oh, really? She talks about how like, "Oh, their eyes lit up when I came on set. They were so excited to see me."
She is high on her own supply. Oh, big time.
She is a piece of work and about how it like gave them a thrill to be singing backup to her during I Put a Spell on You and stuff. I was like, "Look at this girl." Where does she get the goddamn nerve? Cuz I find her annoying as [ __ ] >> I know.
>> That that annoys me to hear. I you you don't say that. No, she is annoying and at the same time I like to I like to watch it. It annoys me, but I'm like, "Look at this ball buster." Like who are you? But I find it kind of fascinating.
I take back everything I said. I don't like her anymore. [laughter] I don't like her.
>> Kathy Najimy, I know. And she you can tell she just she thinks she's a hoot.
>> Ugh. And she like loves the whole thing of it. And um and Kathy Najimy, you may have seen this or heard of it, I'm not sure.
She comes on and Katherine Couric is like, "Now, I heard you were reluctant take to take on this role because you were worried about offending real witches. Is that true?" Oh.
>> And um Kathy Najimy is like, "Yeah, that is true." And she said that she's just very conscious of like, you know, of of all kinds of groups. She's like, "I'm you know, I think about you know, different races, sexual orientations, all all kinds of groups that could be maligned in any way. And I know that there are people who consider themselves witches and I was aware that this could be a stereotype that could hurt people."
>> that's very >> [laughter] >> forward thinking.
>> Yes, and she was like, "So, I just I really considered it and I thought about it. I spoke to the director about it. I spoke to Gloria Steinem about it. And I spoke to you some people who are witches. And at the end of the day, you know, uh based on those conversations, I decided to do it." Or whatever.
>> That's interesting.
>> And I was like, "Okay." Yeah, no, I think I think Yeah, again, '93 is a different world.
>> Yeah. Yeah. But like I I think that uh something that I like about this movie is that it is so gleefully cartoonishly witchy. I do like the dead man's toes thing. I don't like seeing them rolling around in a box.
>> Yeah. I do like that stuff, but I recognize that that's a lot for a kid.
It does Yeah, it's a lot for a kid.
>> for it to be in a PG-rated movie, I feel like.
>> Yeah. Agreed. It's a hard PG. I think it's easy to recognize that that's not part of how people really are. Yeah.

Yeah. Uh yeah, I I I like this I I remember being like amazed I think it was 2016 The Witch, the David Eggers witch.

>> cackling witch. I was like, "This is like refreshing to see."
>> Oh, yeah. You don't see anything go this big anymore. And I think that that especially now with Gladys from Weapons, I think they've really Yeah. people have embraced the idea of a witch who's like doing outrageously broad things.
>> Yes, totally. And is so gleefully villainous.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> '93, we I feel like the only place to get this was a cartoon. Mhm. And this this plays very nicely in 2026 for me. I like these witches. I love them.
>> But I I I also love the idea of Kathy Najimy being like, "Listen, there are people who would call themselves witches who might view this stuff as like weirdly slanderous." It was very kind.
It was It was Yeah. It was just kind of It's just kind of nice to hear that she was being considerate. Why not? You know what I mean?
>> What's the harm to think about it?
>> harm in in like being thoughtful?
>> Yeah. Yeah. She's so cool. Um maybe I'm turned around on Kathy Najimy.
Oh, I think you should be IRL. And again, of course, in Sister Act. She was between the Sister Acts. They addressed that. Uh they >> In this movie? Kathy Najimy. No, in the today [laughter] show interview. They were like, "Kathy Najimy, you know her from Sister Act. She's currently filming the second. That's why we have her zooming in >> Back in the habit.

Yep. That's amazing. Yeah, totally.
>> [laughter] >> Also, she's such a babe in real life. It was so funny. Like they show her just like as her talking or whatever. And then like all of the clips they're showing from her movies, it's like her in the habit and then her like Mary Sanderson. And then this like gorgeous woman.

>> Uh everything with the witches, I think, really really works. When I was a kid, I did not like it. And as a as a man, love it.
>> So, now uh they have made their potion.
Uh but the the kids, obviously, are going to try to stop them. So, Max spills out the potion and yada yada yada. And Danny calls them ugly. Now they're focused on We got to I want to eat Danny. Yeah.
Which that's foolish cuz you got all these kids weapons-ing to your house.
>> How silly.
>> Why not eat one of them real quick and then go get your revenge?
>> Good. Absolutely. Then you could just kill her if you wanted to or whatever.
Or kill those bullies real quick.
>> Yes. What do you think about Max when the bullies go, "Hollywood, help us."
Oh, yeah. And he goes, "Nice shoes." And he takes his shoes back and leaves the bullies in the cages at the witches' house. I know.
>> know that they're not going to immediately be killed and eaten. Not such a laid-back California boy are you now, are you?
>> not. No, he's willing to aid and abet witches at this point.
>> But so they do end up back in the cemetery, which again is hallowed ground. The witches cannot land on it, so they need Billy Butcherson. They just have to have a flying fight.
>> Yeah, they they >> [laughter] >> Yes. It's It's weird. I I like it.
>> But this is the Billy Butcherson turn to I'm And was there any hint that he >> No. No.
>> of a sudden shows up and he's a nice boy. Trying to think. I don't remember, to be totally honest. Yeah. Or were they misinterpreting him chasing them earlier or something? I didn't really get that vibe either. Just out of nowhere, he's a good guy.
>> I'm not going to lie, I'm just so used to the fact that he just turns into a good guy, I didn't even like really think about it.
>> My memory said that like they take him out of the grave and he's instantly Right. good guy. Yeah, maybe he's They just misinterpreted cuz he looked scary.

>> I think that's probably it. Uh it's got to be, right? It's so out of nowhere otherwise.
>> But so uh yeah, they have this sky fight. Yeah.
>> Al- Although, I do want to read the line that Billy Butcherson says.

>> "What?" And he goes, "Trollop." Yeah.

Mhm. He's dressed in similar like 1600s garb.
>> Mhm. Like with epaulets going up and down like the the front of the thing. He looks like he's in The Black Parade.

>> Yeah. But so he and he's like kind of like wiggly cuz he's a zombie, a little jangly. It's a little bit of how Jack Skel- uh Sparrow moves. Oh, Jack Sparrow. Yeah. Yeah.
>> I Did I say Skellington before? Yeah, Jack Sparrow. Like a little a little Johnny Depp Pirates of the Caribbean vibe to Billy Butcherson. Yes. But then he goes, "You buck-toothed mop-riding firefly from hell." Yeah. I've waited centuries to say that. Yeah. It's like >> He goes in.
It But he like he like si- he does an aside to Max on the I've waited centuries for like we're buddies.
>> totally. But it's like some some There's something disturbing and sick about this. I don't know. No, totally. Uh trollop. No. No, it doesn't feel good. Again, trollop is like uh you know, like a sexualized thing. Yeah.
Keep it out.
>> It's very weird.
>> Yes.
>> And then he's like, "You'll be safe in here." And he puts Danny in his own open grave.
>> Right. Right. Thanks, Billy. Yeah. Well, again, she would have been.
>> If she'd stayed in there.
>> But actually, she would have been maybe just as safe anywhere else. Because basically, the main thing is that they circle her in a ring of salt. So, if she just stood anywhere not in a grave inside a ring of salt, would she have been fine if she stayed in that ring?
Maybe.
>> Presumably.
>> But she didn't.
>> She willingly leaves the ring. But yeah, they they the kids hold onto the power cord for the vacuum cleaner.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Which they treat like a slingshot now. Almost. Cuz they hold it back and they're trying to pull away and then the kids go like, "All right, let go now." Yeah. And so Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker go flying up into the sky. The sun is finally starting to come up.
>> Yep. Um Max man he he gets the potion Mhm. from uh uh the Divine Miss M and drinks it himself.
>> Yes, so she can't force Danny to drink it cuz she has snatched her by this point and has her up on her broom.
>> Now, that's good. That's a good move.
You'll have to take me.
>> brother. That's a good brother. Mhm. I would not drink this potion for you, by the way.
>> William. You're going down.
And I'll [gasps and snorts] laugh while it happens. Cruelty.
>> [laughter] >> Most foul.
But so now she has to I'm going to take you, Max, and I'll drink your life essence.
>> Yeah. But she ends up getting knocked off her broom. Yep. And uh I think by Binx. Uh yeah, I think you're right.
>> Binx to the ground and he lands on a stone.
>> Yeah. And he lands on his sister's grave, I Yes, he does.
And then uh uh Bette Midler Mhm.
Bette Midler comes tumbling out of the sky and crashes into the cemetery. Yeah.
So, now she's landed on hallowed ground.
>> Right. So, it starts to burn up her tootsies. And her last line of the movie, as she's sizzling >> Mhm.
>> and turning into stone, she turns into a gargoyle. First, she goes, "Oh, book."
>> Yeah.
Which I think is a weak final line for her.
>> It is. And I hate when she calls for her book.
>> Yeah. But then she turns into stone and the expression on the face of the stone sculpture does not match the the face she's making. I know. And that annoys me.
>> Yes, it's tough. And then she explodes.
Yeah. Yeah, she explodes into like green sparkles. Um why isn't she just a gargoyle? That'd be cool.
>> I don't know. Basically, she explodes because Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy exploded in the sky when the sun touched them.
>> Yeah. Uh I think it was just to have everything in keeping and to do something cool and big. But I don't know. It seems a lot to have her just sort of like um yeah, just sort of freeze into this stone statue. That seems to be enough. And I would like the idea of there being a stone statue of Winifred Sanderson now in the graveyard.
>> Yes. Just leave that as opposed to having it explode.
>> I could not agree more. I think it's cool to have the statue.
>> Yeah. Yeah. And it's sad when the sisters explode cuz they know they're about to die.
>> I know. I know. She said goodbye.
>> Kathy Najimy is like, "What's wrong with her?" Cuz she's like, Winnie, I know.
Bye-bye. Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> Explodes. And it always looks It looks like the Death Star exploding. Like they just like they just jump cut into a little burst of fireworks. It's really weird.
>> It is weird.
>> Yeah. It's good that the two of them at least are in acceptance, it feels like.
They They do say goodbye. They seem to be a little bit absent enough mentally Yeah. um Sarah and Mary Sanderson that they they say goodbye and they seem somewhat at peace.
Um and Winnie is still calling for her book. Yeah, she's not giving up the fight. Yeah, I don't know. Mhm. But then it turns out that Binx, who we thought would live forever, I know.
>> is dying?
>> got run over by a car. So, he was flat and then he reinflated. Disturbing.
>> Disturbing. I didn't like that either.
>> Me neither.
>> Seeing a cat with the tire tread through its tummy flattened and then inflating like a heart balloon. That is effed up.
>> No.
Yeah. But she he gets thrown on the ground against a stone and that's what kills him? Because the witches are dead.
That's what does him in. He's >> He's he's mortal again because >> things in the moment. If I had 30 more seconds, I'd be like, right, of course.
But No, but cuz I think it's weird, too.
He's like, I guess it's like the unfinished business property of a ghost.
He's like, >> Yeah. Now that the cuz he comes back as a spirit. Like, first of course you have to have Dani, the girl crying over the dead cat and hugging its corpse.
>> know. God.
>> hear it, "Dani?" And they look up and it's Thackery Binx as a translucent 1600s boy with his 90s McDonald's haircut.
>> Yes. And he goes, >> [snorts] >> "The witches were gone, so I can move on." Yeah. And that's disturb Whoa. I know. It's like the end of Beauty and the Beast where it's like you finally love how the Beast looks and then he becomes a man. Totally.
>> also looks like that.
>> Yeah, totally. He does. He has that haircut, I think. In Beauty and the Beast?
>> Doesn't he have the M hair? In like the cartoon, you mean?
>> Yeah. Uh I don't remember. Maybe he does. I think it goes into a low ponytail Yeah, so I hate Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I don't know. I think it might just go back a little bit more, but I could absolutely be wrong. But I do think he has kind of like an open uh shirt like that. Yeah.
>> of a flowy white open shirt because Oh, there we go.
>> He does not have the M hair, but he does have flowing flowing locks.
