Understanding why reveals fascinating principles of physics, optics, [music] and human perception that we encounter every day without realizing it. One of the biggest misconceptions is that water has no color at all. While a small amount of water appears clear, pure water actually has a very faint natural blue tint. This happens because water molecules absorb certain wavelengths of visible light more effectively than others. Specifically, water absorbs longer wavelengths, such as reds, oranges, and yellows, slightly more than shorter blue wavelengths. As sunlight travels through water, a small portion of the red light disappears while more blue light remains and is scattered back toward our eyes.
