Labeling standard middle school arithmetic as "outsmarting mathematicians" is a pretentious reach for intellectual depth. It prioritizes mechanical shortcuts like the butterfly method over the conceptual understanding that actual mathematicians value.

When You Outsmart Mathematicians...Added:
Hi everyone. Let's solve this math problem quickly. So Pam is saying that multiplication goes first. So 5* 3 is 15. Good job. And let's bring down the five plus down / 8. Looking at pandas, division goes first. So I don't know what 15 / 8 is.
So let's write it in a fraction form to make the math fun and easy. 15 over 8.
Next, let's bring down the five plus down. But let's bring that five down in a fraction form to make the math fun and easy. 5 over 1 = 5 does not change to 5 + 15 over 8. Notice that we are adding two fractions, but the denominators are different. So, we're to use the butterfly method. So, we'll draw two wings, two antennas, and a body. So, here's the first wing. 5 * 8 is 40. And here's the antenna. And you write the 40 above the antenna. Next, you you multiply 1* 15. So 1 * 15 is 15. Good job. And lastly, don't leave yet because we need to figure out the mixed number answer. I don't know if the answer is 4 1/2 or the the decimal answer. It could be point four 4.5. We don't know. So, make sure that you stick around. Don't skip, please. And also give this video a like. And if you have not subscribed to the channel, please subscribe to the channel. And if you subscribe, thank you so much for your support. And let's continue solving this math problem. Now, 1* 8 is 8. And so, the denominator is 8.
And then we add 40 + 15 which is so that is 55 right and then this cannot be broken down further. So we have our answer 55 over8 that that is called the improper fraction answer. And now we're to use long division to figure out the mixed number and the decimal answer to this tricky math problem. So I'll write 55 over 8 on this side of the board. So we have space for the long division. So here's the long division symbol. And then I'll write the decimal answer here and then the mixed number answer here.
So the 55 goes inside the the the long division symbol and the eight goes outside. So how many times can eight fit into 55? Hm. I don't know. So let's just do some multiplication. So 8 * 10 is 80.
Whoa, that's over 55. Let's do 8 * 5 = 40. So we're getting close. 8 * 6 is 48.
So we're getting close.
8 * 7 is 56. So that goes over 55. So we'll use this six. This six right here.
and then write it up here. So 6 * 8 is 48 and then 55 minus 48 is what is it? I didn't hear you. All right, let's do this. So we're going to borrow. So here's the four. Here's the this this 15. This five becomes a 15. So drop eight, five, six, seven. So it's seven.
Seven. And now how many times can eight fit into seven? You cannot. So the seven needs to borrow a zero. So I'll write a zero there. Give a decimal after the six there. And then bring down the zero.
Give it to the seven. Now the 70 become 70. Now how many times can 8 fit into 70? Well here is 8 * 8 is 64.
Right? So we're getting close to 70. And then 8 * 9 is 72. So that goes over 70.
So we'll use this eight. That goes up there. And then 8 * 8 is 64.
And then you subtract. 70 minus 64 is six. Right? And then how many times can eight fit into six? You cannot. So the six needs to borrow a zero. So I bring down the zero, give it to the six. Now the six becomes 60. How many times can 8 fit into 60? Well, we know 8 * 8 is 64.
So that goes over 60. So it must be and it is 8 * 7. So which is 56.
And then we write that 7 up here. So 7 * 8 is 56.
And then we subtract 60 - 56 is 4. How many times can 8 fit into four? You cannot. So the four needs to borrow a zero. So four becomes 40. So you can fit eight into 40 how many times? Five times because 5 * 8 is 40.
And so is that right? Yep. And 5 * 8 is 40. And 40 minus 40 is zero. So your mixed number answer is this remainder that I'll be circling this seven. So the whole number is six, the remainder seven and then the bottom number of that proper fraction is eight. So be written like this. Six is the whole number seven the remainder over and then the eight as the denominator and that's it. You can't break down 7 over 8 further. So this is your mixed number answer and your decimal answer is 6.875.
