The Backrooms movie, directed by Kane Parsons (now approximately 20 years old), adapts the internet creepypasta phenomenon into a big-budget horror film featuring A24, James Wan, and Osgood Perkins. The film explores liminal spaces, analog horror, and found footage aesthetics, focusing on atmosphere, sound design, and psychological unease rather than traditional horror elements. The story follows a therapist whose patient disappears into a dimension beyond reality, set in a 1990s furniture store. The movie represents a significant shift in horror cinema, demonstrating how internet horror culture can evolve into mainstream theatrical productions while maintaining its unique atmospheric and surrealistic qualities.

We Need To Talk About The Backrooms MovieAdded:
Pull me up. Pull me up. Pull me up. What do you >> Woah.
I'm in a new space.
And it's not a liminal space.
But I did watch a movie that does deal with liminal space, analog horror, found footage, and has a lot of yellow walls.
And I'm pretty sure you know exactly what I'm talking about, so let's get into it.
>> [music] >> What's up, guys? And welcome back to Beyond the Void. My name is Alex, and today we're going to be doing a spoiler-free review of The Backrooms.
That's right. Kane Parsons' series has been turned into a big-budget Hollywood production that has the likes of A24, Osgood Perkins, and James Wan attached to put all their money into a film about The Backrooms. And I got to check it out as a surprise treat from my girlfriend, who I have been moving with to a new home. As you can see, this is a brand new location. I kind of threw my studio together really quick to put this for you guys up so that you could have a video and have some content on the channel because it's been a while. For those who've been waiting on something, please, hopefully, you understand what I'm going through. This has been a huge ordeal of moving. In fact, I'm going to be building this in the background. I may change the camera up. I'm not sure.
I just thought this was a cool angle to start it out with. If you want to help build my studio with me, there's a link down below. You can help out. There's little things, big things, whatever.
I'll put your name on every video, whatever you want, because I just want to build this thing and make it look nice. Anyway, on with The Backrooms.
So, The Backrooms itself is actually sort of a creepypasta internet image that was like put on the internet where they said, "If you no clip, which is a terminology they use in video gaming, through a wall, which sometimes in a game you'll like clip through a wall and it'll put you on the outside of the game, and then you're in this weird realm of a world that doesn't exist exactly within the game, but you are in the game." And so, people took that clip, that photo, it was like a yellow walls and all this other stuff, and Kane Parsons saw it, and he was about 16 years of age, and he decided that he was going to upload a short called The Backrooms that was about this picture, and it was a found footage film on YouTube, and it looked really authentic. It was like a VHS shot found footage from the '90s, and it's following this filmmaker who accidentally falls into the Backrooms while recording. And to a lot of people, this was like extremely realistic, and Kane produced all the visuals himself using Blender and other special effects on his computer. And what made his story different from a lot of other people who tried to add to this creepypasta was that he added a lot of lore to the film. It wasn't just liminal space and just creepy yellow rooms that made his version so interesting. He had an entire research team with a bunch of different creatures and monsters and portals and spiced up this story, and eventually he created an entire series on his YouTube channel that just blew up. I mean, we're talking millions and millions and millions of views. People just could not get enough of this bizarre Backrooms, and he did such a great job that eventually Hollywood came a-knockin', and that's why you have people like A24, James Wan, and Osgood Perkins who said, "Hey, I got some money." So, just to let you know, I have never watched any of the series. You know, I knew about it.
I've seen clips of it, but I didn't know anything about the story. And I think if you are new to this, I think this is an accessible movie that will start you out, and then you can go down the rabbit hole on all of his series and just kind of watch what happens. Uh but I just want to let you know that this is my first time experiencing the Backrooms.
So, if that helps you to decide whether this will be a movie for you, there you go. The story is essentially about a therapist patient disappears into a dimension beyond reality, and she must venture into the unknown to save him.
Obviously directed by Kane Parsons, who's about 20 years of age now, and got handed a pretty big multi-million-dollar project to do. And uh it was written by Will Sodick and Kane Parsons, who did the original stories on all this. So, they gave him a lot of control. Um I'm sure some people helped him along the way, but man, is this some pretty damn good work uh for someone who is so young. It is an inspiration in a lot of ways for those who want to make film, because if this guy can do it, so can you. Get out there. Make a [ __ ] movie. Anyway, this movie has a cast that is stacked, too. You got Chu Tell Edjiro 4, which I'm saying his name slowly because I don't want to mess it up. Uh we also have Renate Reinsve, who is this therapist in the movie, and Mark Duplass, who is the creep from the Creep Tapes and all the different movies. The cast is, you know, a little bit smaller.
It's more condensed. It essentially revolves around this furniture store in the '90s, cuz all of this takes place in the '90s, and this guy is running a failing business and essentially has a a because his life has sort of unraveled apart with his family and the store and he's just trying to keep it together.
You sort of get to know a lot about those characters and then eventually he stumbles upon this glitch [music] in his business that leads him to a pretty unsettling place called the backrooms.
And I got to say like as a person who doesn't know much about this, I did enjoy this movie quite a bit. I think it is very unsettling. I think it's going to affect a lot of people who are of a younger age and in a lot of ways.
Although it's not going to be perfect for everyone because this is a mystery and it is a movie that is made to be a mystery so that you want to ask questions. It's not going to answer everything and it's certainly going to have some moments in the film that are going to be surrealistic, nightmarish, visually effective, sound wise very effective, and just using a lot of talent to make something very unique and different than I've seen in the theater.
Obviously backrooms has been around for many years now. So, you know, this may not be new to some people, but for a lot of people this is fresh and unique. And a lot of people are heralding it to be a modern masterpiece. I I don't know that I share the same sentiment as far as my personal taste, but I definitely can see that this is a change in the horror landscape that is going to affect movies going forward. And I not only will guarantee you that we're going to see a sequel to this, but it is going to have a lot of creepypasta stuff popping up which I am all for. If you guys have ever seen the show Channel Zero, those were based off of creepypasta. It was about a four season show and I got to say it's some of the best television I've ever watched when it comes to horror and just surrealistic nightmarish [ __ ] and to have like a bloom of this sort of liminal analog VHS style 90s even just found footage thing that feels realistic. I think is a good step forward. Some people may not like this again, but I really did enjoy it to an extent. My girlfriend who took me as a surprise, she was not very fond of it.
But even she admitted that there is something about the movie that kind of left her in this space. Now, you guys know that I've moved and I had this weird moment when I left the theater that just kind of hit me and I have to attribute that to Kane Parsons movie because Kane did an amazing job of the atmosphere, the soundtrack, the score was just very weird and unsettling and popping and clicking and electronic and stuff, but like also just the sound effects and everything around you just put you in that atmosphere kind of smells the roses and I think that's a good thing to have new directors messing with the atmosphere in some way. Whether you like the movie or not, focusing on atmosphere is going to yield many different things, many different styles of movies that we're going to see. I walked out of that theater and I had a moment because I'm at a new theater and a new city, a very small city that I'm living in now from the big city which I'm used to. It was a kind of a moment where I felt like I was living in a sort of mimicking world, like a world that wasn't where I was used to and what I've been used to for decades now. It was like this weird little place off to the side that is kind of mimicking a big city in the middle of a small town and I felt a little out of place and a little unsettled by that. The movie really had that effect on me and it just kind of made me feel like I was in this weird alternate reality. But yeah, if you want to watch this movie, just go into it understanding that there is not going to be a lot of questions answered.
There is a lot of atmosphere, a lot of focus on the sound design, the music that is going to compound into a very weird, surrealistic, nightmarish landscape that isn't exactly gory, but there are moments in the film that I think would traumatize a child. And they do switch it up um with the the the creatures and stuff in this. It is giving something a little bit different than the show, but still maintaining that nugget of what Kane Parsons made, and just kind of giving you a glance in.
And I guarantee you this is going to change the landscape quite a bit. I'm sitting at about a 7.5, but how this affected me afterwards is sort of pushing me into a higher number, and I think it's going to be a little awkward for some people going into this movie. They may love it right off the get, or they may kind of have to digest it a little bit to really feel it and really understand what they've watched, because this is not a simple, you know, paint-by-numbers story that spells it all out for you, okay? So, if you're one of those people that just can't handle the mystery, this is not going to be for you, but I still urge you to check it out and get in the weird vibe that this movie offers. It's made me want to go and watch the old series, and I I have a feeling by the end of the year when I rewatch this, it may be even higher.
And there's something about it that I just want to root for as a creative person watching Kane Parsons from, you know, the beginning of his childhood to this today in 4 years time is just Who doesn't want to support something like that, you know what I mean? Even if you don't like it, you have to just admire that that is happening, and that there's all this new fresh young talent coming out and doing new projects with horror and I'm all for it. I don't care who the [ __ ] makes horror. I want to see more of it and if you're opposed to different versions of horror, then I honestly have a feeling that you aren't truly a horror fan.
You're more of a genre fan, a specific subgenre fan. It's going to take its time. It's an hour and 45 minutes, so but yeah, that's just my thoughts.
That's just my opinions. I know this video is going to be a little longer than normal, but I have a lot to say about it and I really wanted to share that with you because I want to paint that picture without spoiling a thing about the movie and I hope I do a good job of conveying that to you guys.
[music] So let me know what you think in the comment section down below. Are you a big Kane Parsons fan and you watch the whole series and are looking forward to this because I think there's enough there for you guys as well as the newcomer like myself who just walked into the theater and walked out feeling like I left the backrooms. Thanks for coming by guys. Let me know what you think down below. Hit the like and subscribe button if you like what I had to say here. But thanks for coming by and as always, long live the void.
