Why did World War I even start? Europe in 1914 was on the verge of war. Germany and France were bitter rivals after the Franco-Prussian War, still clashing over Alsace-Lorraine. Austria-Hungary struggled to hold its multi-ethnic empire together. Britain and Germany raced to build the biggest navies.
The spark came on June 28th, 1914.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in Sarajevo by a Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip.
Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia. With Germany's support, it issued an ultimatum. Serbia resisted parts of it.
On July 28th, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia mobilized to protect Serbia. Germany declared war on Russia and then on France. Germany invaded Luxembourg and Belgium to reach France, bringing Britain into the war.
The war has begun.
