[00:00:03]Did they just copy their flags? Well, it's complicated. Monaco's red and white go back to 1297 when Franchesco Grimaldi captured the fortress of Monaco disguised as a monk. Those colors became tied to the Grimmaldi family. And by 1881, they officially became Monaco's flag. But Indonesia wasn't copying anyone's homework. Their red and white go back to the 13th century Majapahit Empire, dominating the seas on ancient warships long before modern borders existed. By 1945, these colors became a middle finger to colonialism when rebels literally kicked the Dutch out and reclaimed the colors for their own. When Monaco complained the flags were identical, Indonesia basically said, "Our history is just as deep." In the end, they reached a stalemate. Monaco kept its square. Indonesia kept its rectangle. and Poland, they just flipped the whole thing over and hoped nobody would notice.
