When political leaders use government institutions like the Justice Department to pursue criminal investigations against individuals who have successfully sued them in court, it raises serious concerns about the misuse of state power for political retribution rather than genuine justice, potentially undermining public trust in legal institutions and the rule of law.

Just when you think Donald Trump, the Trump administration, and the Trump Justice Department couldn't possibly sink to new moral lows, they do find a lower place. It was reported last night that Trump's Justice Department is launching a criminal investigation into the very woman that Donald Trump sexually abused and defamed and was found to have done such by a jury of his peers. But before we unpack all that, if you end up liking this video and you want to support the channel, please be sure to hit the like, subscribe, and alert bells before you go. All right, folks. I don't want to bury the lead on this. We're going to jump into this clip in just a second. But to really remind you about who this person is, this is Eene Carol whom Donald Trump was found to have sexually abused and defamed in a New York trial a few years ago. And I really want to drive this point home.
The presiding judge in this case said yes, Trump was found to have raped Eugene Carol. That was the presiding judge in the case. And now Trump's justice department is trying to criminally punish her by using the powers of the state.
That's it's stunning even by Trump standards.
Not surprising, but stunning. Let's take a look.
>> Exclusive and breaking news right now.
The Justice Department, CNN is learning, has launched a new criminal investigation into one of Trump's enemies, Eugene Carol. Now, Eugene Carol was the former magazine columnist who accused President Donald Trump of sexual assault. Uh, ended up being that he was liable for sexual abuse. The source is telling CNN that the investigation now is focused on whether Carol committed perjury during her two civil lawsuits against the president. Paula Reed is breaking the story and she's out front.
And Paula, what else are you learning about this? I mean, there was obviously a verdict here.
>> That's right. And here, Erin, this is the latest move by the Justice Department to take action against one of President Trump's longstanding foes. Our sources tell us that this investigation is focused on a 2022 deposition that Carol gave where she said that she had not received any outside funding. Now, her later her lawyers later told the judge that she had in fact received funding for legal fees and expenses from billionaire Reed Hoffman. The judge overseeing this case ultimately said there were no issues with her credibility and blocked Trump lawyers from asking about this at trial. Now, Carol currently has multiple uh legal battles with Trump currently pending, including one before the Supreme Court.
Now, notably, Erin, the Supreme Court has deferred 12 times on a decision whether they want to take up that case.
Now, over at the Justice Department, acting attorney general Todd Blanch, I am told, has recused from this case because he worked on one of the appeals uh related to the Carol case. Now, I'm told he has not attended any meetings or been in any discussions about this investigation.
>> That's at least, I guess, a piece of good news in all of this, that Todd Blanch, Trump's former personal attorney, who is now his hatchet man at the DOJ, has finally vain to recuse himself in this particular instance. And yet it's abundantly clear that the Justice Department has nevertheless gotten the memo that we are here to punish Donald Trump's political foes.
Now people are rightly condemning this move by Trump and the Justice Department under Trump sick. Trump critics erupt over disgusting DOJ probe into Eene Carol. Democratic lawmakers and Trump critics erupted with outrage Wednesday after the news the Justice Department opened a criminal investigation into Eene Carol, the writer who won millions in damages after juries, plural, found that Donald Trump uh was liable for sexual abuse and defamation.
So, let's take a look at this. Governor Gavin Newsome's press office says Donald Trump is sick. Senator Adam Schiff, Democrat, says first Trump weaponized the DOJ to target his political enemies.
Now, perversely, he's targeting Eugene Carroll, the woman who credibly and successfully sued him for sexual assault. He's using the power of the DOJ to go after his own victims. It's a vile attack on the rule of law and a disgusting insult to victims everywhere.
Congressman Ted Louu, a Democrat, says the Justice Department is acting unethically on a stupendous scale. The DOJ is filing frivolous cases and investigations against people Trump doesn't like. The DOJ believes it can override a jury. It cannot. November is coming. Sam Stein of the Bull Work says, "If there was institutional credibility left to burn, this would do the trick, but I can hardly call this a surprise at this point." Also, Tim Miller of the Bull Work says, "A truly despicable, corrupt, unamerican, rapist, wannabe authoritarian quote unquote man is running the country and everyone enabling him should be ashamed." more uh are commenting as well. Former Republican and former husband of uh Kellyanne Conway um who uh was Donald Trump's probably most effective spinster spinster spin artist spin artist says, "Dear at real Donald Trump, you are an adjudicated digital rapist. Nothing can change that because it's a fact and the evidence was not contested because you were too scared to testify. Feel free to come after me, too. Best George, PS.
[ __ ] you."
Just when you think they can't go lower, they scrape the bottom of the septic tank. Jen Uer of the Young Turk says, "Now Trump is using the DOJ to go after the woman he sexually assaulted, Egene Carol, because he wasn't enough of a douchebag to her. There is no end to his spite and bitterness. No one has ever weaponized the Justice Department this much before, breaking every irony record." Brian Crraenstein on dem on who's a Democratic strategist on Twitter also commenting on this. Carol defeated Trump in two separate civil cases. In 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming her. A second jury later ordered Trump to pay additional damages for repeated defamatory statements attacking her credibility. And both rulings were upheld on appeal. So Trump got his ass kicked multiple times in court over this. And again, not to get too graphic, but I want to really circle the point here. According to the presiding judge, Trump raped her. Now, this was a civil suit because under New York criminal law, apparently you have to use your genitals to forcibly penetrate somebody else to qualify as um criminal rape in New York criminal law. Why the judge said that what he did to Eugene Carol, what Trump did to Eugene Carol constitutes rape is because he digitally he used his fingers to forcibly penetrate her. Again, apologies for getting too graphic, but this is the sitting president of the United States.
This is what a jury found that he did to her. And again, this this ruling was upheld despite multiple appeals by multiple juries. Um, and now Donald Trump is using the power of the state, your taxpayer dollars, to punish a woman who is a victim of his and a jury determined was a victim of his. Mediaide also reports CNN legal experts hammer Trump over campaign of quote vengeance and retribution against rape accuser Eugene Carol. So, let's hear a bit about this from Ellie Honig and Paula Reid.
again the uh CNN legal analyst in question.
>> This is exclusive reporting. What are sources telling you about this?
>> So sources tell our colleagues Caris Canel, Henry Benowitz and I that the theory of this case is that she may have perjured herself during her two civil cases against President Trump. Now, they're specifically looking at a 2022 deposition where Carol said that she had not received any outside funding, but her lawyer subsequently informed the court that she had received outside funding from billionaire Reed Hoffman to help with legal legal fees and expenses.
Now, ahead of the trial, the judge said that he didn't see any problem with her credibility and actually blocked Trump lawyers from asking uh about this funding. Now, as we understand, this is still in the early stages. It's unclear uh though if anything will actually come of this investigation because this has to be seen of course in the context of this larger effort to use the Justice Department to pursue President Trump's political adversaries and that's been met with mixed results.
>> Let's play some of what President Trump has said about Eugene Carol over the years. Here it is.
>> I don't even know who this woman is. I have no idea who she is, where she came from. This is another scam. It's a political witch hunt. This is all political stuff, including the women's stuff. The Burgdorf Goodman. I meet a woman outside of Burgdorf Goodman. I took her upstairs to a changing booth.
It was all made up. And you know who's financing it? Reed Hoffman, their number one political donor. Reed Hoffman. Big fat slob. It's a madeup fabricated story by somebody I think initially just looking to promote a book. I should be suing her for defamation.
>> What does that context tell us about this?
>> It reminds us how personal this is for him and this is not something that he has forgotten about. He continues to litigate uh against a lot of these judgments. So if you are at the Justice Department or within the administration, Eugene Carol is going to be someone on his short list of people that he has vowed. He's been very public. He wants to engage in a campaign of retribution now that he is back in power. While I was surprised in the course of this reporting uh to learn that this had been referred, that they were actively working on this, when you think of it in the larger context of what he promised he would do, it's actually not that surprising.
>> Yeah, maybe not. All right, CNN senior legal analyst Ellie Honig is also here with us. The theory, Ellie, is based on a 2022 deposition statement by Carol that she received no outside funding for her lawsuit, as Paula laid out there, but it was later revealed that Reed Hoffman, the billionaire, did pay some legal expenses. Do you think that's worthy of a criminal investigation?
>> Well, Brianna, perjury cases are notoriously tricky. DOJ has and does charge perjury cases. I'll give you some examples. Michael Flynn, charge of perjury. Roger Stone charged with perjury. Paul Maniffort charged with perjury. Now, all that said, you cannot ignore the context here, which you just laid out with Paula, which is Donald Trump has shown throughout his time back in office, his second term, that his DOJ will go after anybody who has crossed him. And he's made no secret of the fact that he wants vengeance against Eene Carol. And that's more than just political atmospherics, Briana. That's going to eventually give Eene Carol if big if. But if there is a criminal charge here, she will make a vindictive prosecution defense. Same thing that Jim Comey was going to make and surely will make with his new with his new indictment. Same thing that Leticia James made. Now, the case was dismissed on other grounds. Same basis for the dismissal of the indictment against Kilar Obgo Garcia last week. So the political background here can absolutely become legally relevant.
This is a big deal. Again, Ellie Honig, by the way, is no um you know, purple-haired liberal or anything like that. Like, this is a guy who's actually defended Trump in instances uh in terms of certain lawsuits against him saying, "Oh, I believe this is politicized. I believe that Alvin Bragg shouldn't have brought this." And yet he's making the case this is political retribution. This is absolutely political retribution. and he references the fact that a judge dismissed the case against Kilmargo Garcia, which who was one of the the most high-profile victims of Donald Trump visa be his ruthless authoritarian immigration crackdown. That case was dismissed by a judge on the rare grounds of malicious prosecutions. It's like, yeah, it's very clear you're just trying to screw this guy. It's not about the, you know, careful dispensation of justice. So, folks, again, we are seeing Donald Trump truly go for broke. I mean, just when you think he couldn't possibly sink to new lows again, he is now using your taxpayer funded justice department, the the the power of the state, the power of the federal government to try to hurt someone whom he raped, according to a judge and a jury 30 years ago.
And this is a ruling that has been that has survived multiple appeals, multiple scrutiny. The the damages have held up.
Donald Trump was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation. And the presiding judge clarified that what Donald Trump did to Eugene Carol would be considered rape in the common parlance. And now he's using the Justice Department to try to punish her because she successfully defended herself in court against him.
Truly disgusting and despicable, even by Trump standards. And we have two and a half years left to go. In the meantime, let me know what you think in the comments.
