A bill (HR 1232) was proposed in the North Carolina state legislature that would completely ban abortion, authorize prosecution and the death penalty for women seeking abortions, and legalize the murder of healthcare workers providing abortion services; while this bill is not currently law and would be vetoed by Governor Stein, the speaker emphasizes that such bills are proposed annually by Republicans to threaten women's reproductive rights and that understanding these legislative proposals is crucial for voters to recognize the stakes in elections.

The North Carolina bill that would legalize murdering womenAdded:
We got to talk about a new bill that was filed in North Carolina state legislature that would not only completely ban abortion, but also authorize the prosecution and the death penalty for any woman who sought an abortion and legalize the murder of any healthcare worker involved in providing an abortion. A lot of people are talking about this, so let's get into it. Now, just for the record, if you think I'm exaggerating, I am not. It's HR 1232, go look it up. I've seen a lot of people kind of wave their hands about this thing and say, "Ah, don't worry about it, it's not a big deal." And I recommend you stop doing that because this bill and the many others like it very much are a big deal. And it's a big deal because a bunch of guys went through the trouble of proposing a bill to legalize the murder of women accessing healthcare as well as the healthcare workers serving them. Now, I just want to be super clear about this.
Abortion is legal in the state of North Carolina and while this bill has been proposed, it is not the law, it is not going to pass in this legislative session. And this thing is not a one-off. A bunch of guys propose a bill like this every single year and it's not cuz they're kidding around. It's because they want to punish women and threaten them with death. Believe people when they tell you what they want. The whole reason this bill isn't going to go anywhere is because the Democrats can stop it. Governor Stein will veto this bill on site. The Democrats have the votes to uphold that veto and that gives some people a real sense of security.
But hang with me for a second. What if we had Governor Mark Robinson, Republican governor does not veto this bill, suddenly the people behind it don't need a super majority support, they only need a simple majority, which they have, and all of a sudden reproductive freedom no longer exists in the state of North Carolina. Here's something fun. Back in 2021 when the Republicans filed this bill, they also included an addendum talking about how their murder bill would affect Medicaid costs. And they also included this part: The practice of abortion being an act of murder should be treated as any other instance of murder under existing law.
Their words. The anti-choice people desperately want you to pay no attention to what they're doing and go look somewhere else. Do not fall for it. That is what they want. No, this bill's not going to pass this year, but it's important for everyone to know that these are the stakes in our elections.
The people who want to prosecute and murder women are in our legislature today, and it's important for everyone to know what they want to do if only they could.
