The early Christian church was founded on a diverse community where women and men prayed together, including Mary the mother of Jesus and even Jesus's brothers who initially did not believe in him, demonstrating that the church is a place for all people regardless of their background or initial faith.

A reading from the word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles, the first chapter, beginning at the sixth verse.
Acts 1 verse 6-14.
When the apostles had come together, they asked Jesus, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?
He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight.
While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them and they said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven?
This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet which is near Jerusalem a Sabbath day journey away.
And when they entered the city they went to the room upstairs where they were staying.
Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philillip, Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alus and Simon the Zealot and Judas son of James.
All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer together with certain women including Mary the mother of Jesus as well as his brothers.

A reading from the word of God written in the first letter of Peter the fourth chapter beginning at the 12th verse. 1 Peter 4:es 12-14 and chapter 5 6-11.
Beloved, do not be surprised that the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you are sharing Christ's sufferings so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed.
If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed because the spirit of glory, which is the spirit of God, is resting on you. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Discipline yourselves. Keep alert. Like a roaring lion, your adversary, the devil, prowls around looking for someone to devour.
Resist him. Steadfast in your faith. For you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.
And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you.
To him be the power forever and ever.
Amen.

>> Glory to Christ our savior.
>> Jesus looked up to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come. Glorify your son so that the son may glorify you since you have given him authority over all people to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life that may know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your presence, the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.
I have made your name known to those whom you gave mo me from the world. They were yours and you gave them to me and they have kept your word.
Now they know that everything you have given is from you. For the words that you give to me, I have given to them and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you.
and they have believed that you sent me.
I am asking on their behalf. I am not asking on behalf of the world but on behalf of those whom you gave me because they are yours.

Some words from the book of the Acts of the Apostles, the first chapter, the 14th verse.
All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer together with certain women including Mary the mother of Jesus as well as his brothers.
All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer together with certain women including Mary the mother of Jesus as well as his brothers.
Today we've come to that critical period in the church's year, the seventh Sunday of Easter that falls within that period where ascension has taken place and Jesus has already gone up to his father and the Holy Spirit has not yet come. A time when the church should be doing the type of introspection and reflection on its mission and ministry that is necessary.
And it's quite apppropo that today we're observing Anglican Communion Sunday within the worldwide Anglican Communion.
But we're also observing here in Barbados the beginning of our annual senate. So they could not have fallen at a better time for us to truly assess where we are and where this church needs to go. And what this period really calls us to is to go back to the very foundation of the church. How did it begin? Who made up this church? What was the purpose of this church? We are told in the passage that Jesus was on the mount of Olivet and he gave his disciples the great commission according to the book of Acts that you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Jerusale Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. So they knew what they were called to do. And then he told them, "Go back and wait for power from on high. But they went back and they waited. But in waiting they did something critical. We're told that they were together in prayer.
They prayed together. They built a community centered on prayer. But more importantly is who made up this community. We have of course the 11 whom Jesus had chosen.
Of course they had to choose another one because Judas had committed suicide. But they were the 11 who were the leadership of the church.
And then we're told that there was Mary, the mother of Jesus, there with the women. And the women were not just there to serve the disciples. They were alongside the disciples praying together.
And the mother of God, Mary, was there.
And it speaks to the integral role that Mary was to play in this me in this movement going forward. Because the writer of Acts is writing within a context. He's writing within a context within the Roman Empire where some religions were actually exclusive based on sex.
Myithism was a male only religion. The worship of Isis was a female only religion. But here we have the bedrock of this Christian faith saying that this will be made up of men and women and not not just men and women but men and women praying alongside each other together.
that they're to to work together and Mary the mother of God is to be there. I know that many people question the prominence of Mary in the church. Sometimes when I have a funeral and I do the committal some people ask me but aren't you Anglican? Why are you saying the Hail Mary?
I said but it's scripture.
It's not anything that is not Anglican or simply Roman Catholic. When I say, "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee." I'm actually reciting the words of Gabriel to Mary. That's what that's how he greeted her. Hail the who are highly favored, the Lord is with you. And when I say, "Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus," I'm reciting the words of Elizabeth. when Mary visited her.
We're told that when Mary visited Elizabeth, the child in Elizabeth's womb jumped and and Elizabeth said, "Blessed are thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of your womb." That's what it is.
And then when we say, "Holy Mary, mother of God," that comes out of our belief that she is the mother of God. She is theoticus.
She is the mother of God. Because if we hold the gospel according to John to be true, John said in the beginning was the word and the word was with God >> and the word >> was God. And what does he say in verse 14? I've quoted this enough for you to know in verse 14 and the word was made >> and dwelt among us. So if the word was God and the word was made flesh and the word came into being through Mary, isn't Mary the mother of God?
Isn't that what John is saying?
So when I say, "Holy Mary, mother of God," that is scripture.
Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Mary was the intercessor during Jesus's time on earth. When people wanted to get close to Jesus, they asked Mary is there in St. John's gospel, right?
Again, at Jesus's first miracle, when things began to fall apart at the wedding feast, who did they go to?
They went to Mary and told her go to your son and Mary interceded on their behalf.
And so when we say holy mother Mary mother of God pray for us sinners say but Mary dead how can she pray? But every Sunday we gather here and we will say the creed not long from now we believe in the holy Catholic church the >> communion of saints.
And later on I will say I forgot what I will say later on.
>> Therefore we praise you joining our voices with >> angels >> and archangels and with all the company of heaven who forever sing this hym to proclaim the glory of your name.
So there's worship constantly taking place and as s as the writer of the revelation says the prayers of the saints are constantly going up before the throne of God.
And so Mary is the whole and integral place in this church.
And then of course we're told that the brothers of Jesus were there. But these brothers of Jesus, well, in some traditions they believe that Joseph was married before and he had children and those are James and Jude and the others who became known as the brothers of Jesus. Some traditions say they were actually Mary's children after she after Jesus. But we don't have any evidence of that. So we hold the first one. But they were the brothers of Jesus there. But why? What?
These people didn't believe in Jesus.
Jesus's brothers didn't believe in him.
You all know that Jesus's brothers thought he was local.
When you read John 7 and verse 5, it tells us plainly his brothers did not believe in him.
They were telling the man, "Look, if you got these disciples, why you hanging around Galilee? Go up in Jerusalem and show the man the things you can do." But they didn't believe.
And then in Matthew 12:46 and following, we're told that Jesus was teaching and somebody nudged him say, "Your mother and your brothers outside looking for you."
And Jesus didn't go out.
Jesus said, "My mother and my brothers, you are my mother. You are my brothers because probably there was a family discussion at home and the brothers were saying, "Mommy, you ain't going to stop this boy from doing this thing."
Cuz you know when somebody goes rogue in the family, everybody gets affected, right? So the boys were probably going about as man oh my your brother go you don't go tell your brother something.
So they were coming to you know have a little family discussion and Jesus said you are my mother you are my brothers I'm not going out there to them because they did not believe him.
And it really speaks to how this early church was set up because what it means is that space must always be open and left open for those who even though they've opposed us before there'll be space for them to come in. So that is the really the bedrock the embriionic stages of the church. They continued in prayer and there was this mixed bag.
There were men and women praying alongside each other. There was the mother of God who was the intercessor here on earth and then there were his brothers who did not believe but that was the church and it reminds us in our time that that's how it began later on their faith will become more crystallized as we hear in acts chapter 2 and verse 42 they not only remained in prayer but now they were grounded in the apostles creature teaching in fellowship in the breaking of bread and in prayer.
So they developed the faith over time and later on it will become developed to what we will profess later on in the nyine creed. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church which are known as the marks of the church. So whenever you want to find out what whenever you feel that you've strayed from your moorings, go back to the beginning. Go back to the beginning and find out where this church really began.
find out who were the principles in this church.
And it reminds us that it is a place for all where women and men pray together and build a community where those who did not believe and once oppose it can have a place as well.
And it could not be a better message for us on Anglican Communion Sunday because I'm sure that you've been hearing over time that the communion is on the verge of splitting and the largest part of the communion which the largest part of the communion which is under the leadership of most people who exist in a movement called Gaffcon. on have decided that they cannot be in communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury anymore. It was bad when it was Archbishop Welby, but once a woman was selected as Archbishop of Canterbury, that's when things fell apart.
And perhaps today, Anglican Communion Sunday, we should go back to the very beginning and see who were there in the beginning.
They were the women praying with the disciples. They prayed together. They didn't pray in a room by themselves. And the disciples because they were bigger than they were together.
That this is a place for all.
And it's quite interesting that while our Anglican communion is on the verge of splitting because amongst other things, a woman is now the leader.
The Pope of the Roman Catholic Church just met with her and they met as equals.
They met as leaders of Christian communities.
A reminder of the bedrock of how it all started that the women were there praying together with the disciples.
And today is very significant as I said for us as a dasis because we begin our sinned today and it gives us a chance to look at our mission and ministry and again go back to first principles go back to where it all began so that we can minister to people in our time but even further a field May 1726 was designated ated as a day of special recognition and prayer in the United States of America.
And Christians from all walks of life are called to gathered on the mall this morning and throughout the day to offer prayers.
We pray for them.
We pray that prayers may genuinely be offered.
We pray that there may be prayers for the unity of that nation.
We pray that as they prepare to celebrate their 250th anniversary as a nation, they may truly do so as a nation under God.
Because I am sure even those who have taken a cursory glance at where the United States have been heading in the past few years will become very concerned about its direction.
And so let us pray that today is not about crowd sizes but about genuine worship to God and genuine prayers that all people just as the church began where the brothers of Jesus were there the the the ones who were not a part of it before that prayers may be offered where all can be embraced and hold a place in that nation that people will not have to live in fear that their homes will be raided or they'll be picked up or their children will be picked up but that genuine love will prevail.
I hope that prayers will be offered that the land will be relieved of the grip of fascism which it has been taking in the past few months.
We pray that prayers will not be offered in the name of God to destroy others.
>> We pray that prayers will be offered for those who said we will not go negotiate with words but we'll negotiate with bombs.
Pray for a transformation in their nation, in ours and throughout the world.
Let us go back to the foundation of where it all began.
It began with women and men and those who did not believe coming together to build what has become one of the greatest movements in the world. What started with this mixed bag of people is now over two billion strong.
And we are part of that. Let us go out and make a difference in our world. But make a difference grounded in where it all began. That this church is a place where all people can come and experience the love of God and have peace in their lives. Amen.
>> Amen.
Let us now with confessed the faith into which we were baptized by saying the Ning Creed. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, the maker of heaven and earth, >> of all that is seen or unseen.
>> We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, one in being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us, for our salvation, he came down from heaven. By the power of the Holy Spirit, he was born of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake, he was crucified under Ponteus Pilot. He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
>> We believe in the holy spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the father. With the father and the son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

>> Sovereign Lord and Father, to you be glory and praise forever. In your boundless wisdom, you brought creation into being. In your great love, you fashioned us in your image. In your tender compassion, you sent your son, Jesus, Christ, our savior, to share our human nature. In the power of the Holy Spirit, he overcame the power of sin and death and brought your people to new birth as first fruits of your new creation.
On the night that he was betrayed, he took bread. And when he had given thanks to you, he broke it and gave it to his disciples and said, "Take this and eat it. This is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
And after supper, he took the cup of wine. And when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, "Drink this all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.
Therefore, Father, according to the command of your dearly beloved son, >> we remember his death.
>> We proclaim his resurrection. We await his coming in glory. And we offer you, Father, our sacrifice of thanks and praise.
