Everyone wanted to know only one thing.
What was written inside the Dead Sea Scrolls? Historians studied the words, analyzed the languages, and tried to understand their meaning. But almost no one asked one very simple question. What were these scrolls actually made from?
Then in 2020, a DNA study came out that completely changed the picture.
Scientists didn't study the ink.
Instead, they studied the DNA of the animals whose skins were used to make the scrolls. And what they found raised serious questions about a theory that had been accepted for decades. Just imagine if the skin of a single animal could prove that one of history's most accepted stories wasn't completely correct, then what is the real truth?
Were these scrolls really written where they were found? Or did their journey begin somewhere else? And what evidence made scholars rethink what they had believed for so many years? In today's video, we'll understand the complete story from beginning to end. We'll see how a small discovery by a shepherd in 1947 led to a DNA study in 2020 and how that research completely changed the way people look at the Dead Sea Scrolls. Near the Dead Sea close to Jordan, a young Bedawin shepherd named Muhammad Edhib was searching for his lost goat.
While looking for it, he reached a cave in the hills. Thinking the goat might be hiding inside, he threw a stone into the cave. But instead of hearing the goat, he heard the sound of a clay pot breaking. Curious, he went inside the cave. There he found several large clay jars that seemed to have been sealed for centuries. When one of the jars was opened, it contained old leather scrolls carefully wrapped in linen cloth. At that moment, neither Muhammad Adib nor the rest of the world had any idea that this would become one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in history.
After that, continuous excavations began in the area. Between 1947 and 1956, thousands of pieces were found in 11 different caves around Kuman. In total, around 25,000 fragments were discovered, which were later identified as parts of nearly 1,000 different manuscripts.
These included the oldest known copies of biblical books such as Genesis, Isaiah, and Psalms. Along with them, many other writings about religious laws, hymns, and future prophecies were also found. Scientists dated these scrolls to around 250 B.CEE CE to 68 CE.
This discovery wasn't important just because very old documents had been found. The real reason it mattered was that these scrolls gave people a rare look into the religious and historical world of that time. Something that was previously known only in limited detail.
When the Dead Sea Scrolls were introduced to the world, the biggest question was who actually wrote them?
For many years, different studies were carried out and gradually one theory became the most widely accepted. It was known as the Essenes theory. According to this theory, the scrolls were written by a Jewish religious community called the Essenes. This group was also mentioned by ancient historians Josephus and Plenny the Elder. According to their writings, the Essenes lived a simple life away from the rest of society. They strictly followed religious rules and spent most of their time copying sacred texts and living a deeply religious life. The place where the scrolls were found, known as the Kumran settlement, was also believed to have been the home of this community. Several pieces of evidence supported this idea. Some of the scrolls contained rules that pointed to a disciplined religious community.
They also mentioned a solar calendar which was different from the lunar calendar used in the temple of Jerusalem at that time. This suggested that the community followed its own separate religious tradition. In the same collection, researchers also found a famous document called the war scroll, which described the final battle between the sons of light and the sons of darkness. Many scholars believe that only a community that saw itself as separate from the rest of society could have written such a text. Over time, this theory became so popular that it was almost accepted as fact. Museums around the world started presenting the same story. Many documentaries also claimed that the Dead Sea Scrolls were the private library of the Essen community. Even in schools and universities, people were taught for years that the Essenes wrote these scrolls, preserved them, and later hid them inside the caves to protect them from the Roman invasion. For nearly 70 years, the Essen theory was considered correct. But as time passed, a few questions began to appear that this theory couldn't fully answer. It started with the handwriting. When scholars compared different fragments, they noticed that the handwriting wasn't the same. Some looked very neat and written by experienced scribes, while others looked much more ordinary. If all the scrolls had been written by the same community, then why was there such a big difference? After that, scientists also examined the parchment, the animal skin on which the scrolls were written. Some parchments were prepared with very high quality while others were much more ordinary. Not only that, the writing styles also showed clear differences.
This raised a new question. Were all these documents really produced in the same place? Then came carbon dating. The results showed that some of the scrolls were older than the Kumran settlement itself. In other words, if the settlement was built later, then how did scrolls written earlier end up there?
That question became even more important. Another interesting clue came from the book of Jeremiah. Researchers found two different versions of it. One was longer while the other was shorter.
Even their order was different. If a single religious community strictly followed its own traditions, then why would it preserve two different versions of the same book? After these questions, several new theories appeared. Some scholars suggested that Kuman was not a religious settlement at all, but a pottery workshop. Others believed it might have been a military outpost. Some even suggested that the caves were a sacred depository where holy texts brought from different places were stored safely. All of these ideas sounded reasonable, but there was one problem. No one had solid evidence to prove them. So the old theory continued to be considered the strongest. Then someone entered this story who was neither an archaeologist nor a historian. But one question from him changed the direction of the entire debate. In 2012, a simple lunch meeting at Tel Aviv University in Israel changed the direction of Dead Sea Scrolls research. That day two people were sitting at the same table. One was Oded Rachavi, a molecular biologist who worked on ancient DNA. The other was Noam Mizrahi, who had spent years studying the Dead Sea Scrolls. During their conversation, the discussion returned to the same old problem. Around 25,000 fragments had already been found, but it was still difficult to decide which piece belonged to which scroll.
Until then, scholars tried to match the fragments by comparing handwriting, language, parchment, texture, and their own experience. But this method was never completely reliable. Many times, two fragments looked like they belong together, only to later turn out to be from different manuscripts.
Then during the discussion, Nom Misrai pointed out that all these scrolls were written on parchment, animal skin. The moment Odavi heard that, he paused for a few seconds. Then he said one sentence that changed the entire way of thinking.
Parchment contains DNA.
That one sentence created a completely new question. If these scrolls were made from animal skin, could traces of DNA still be preserved inside it? And if so, could DNA help identify where a scroll was made, which animal its skin came from, and which fragments actually belong together? The surprising part was that no one had seriously thought about this for so many years. Everyone was focused only on the words written on the scrolls, but almost no one paid attention to the material those words were written on. Maybe that was because historians were studying the texts.
While DNA scientists worked in a completely different field, it was only when these two worlds came together that this new idea was born. How was the DNA extracted without touching the scroll?
Now, the biggest question was in front of the researchers. If DNA was the key to solving this mystery, then how could they extract it? The problem was that the Dead Sea Scrolls are considered some of the world's most valuable ancient manuscripts. Cutting them, scraping them, or even removing a tiny piece was not allowed. They needed the DNA, but without causing any damage to the scrolls. After thinking about it for several years, the scientists found a unique solution. Instead of studying the scrolls directly, they turned their attention to the storage boxes where the scrolls had been kept for decades. Over the years, tiny dust particles had naturally fallen from the scrolls and collected at the bottom. That dust became their biggest hope. The dust contained tiny particles of collagen.
Collagen is the main protein found in animal skin. Scientists believed that traces of ancient DNA might still be preserved inside these particles, so they never touched the written parts of the scrolls. They collected samples only from the blank edges and from the dust inside the storage boxes, making sure there was no damage at all. The samples were then taken to specialized ancient DNA labs. These were not ordinary laboratories. Everything was handled with extreme care. The labs were cleaned using UV sterilization. Positive air pressure was used and contamination was carefully controlled at every step to make sure that modern DNA didn't accidentally mix with the ancient samples. This work wasn't completed in a day or two. The scientists spent several years carrying out repeated tests. Many samples turned out to be unusable and several had to be tested again. But in the end, they successfully recovered reliable DNA sequences from several scrolls. For the first time, they had scientific evidence based on real genetic information instead of assumptions. When the final report was ready, the scientists expected that most of the results would support what was already believed. But the report revealed one name that nobody had expected. And that single discovery started changing a 70-year-old story.
After years of hard work, when the scientists finally examined the DNA report, everything looked normal at first. Most of the scrolls were made from sheep skin, which was exactly what they had expected. Sheep and goats could easily be raised in the desert region of Judea. They could survive with very little water and on dry land, so this result didn't surprise anyone. But then the report revealed something that shocked everyone. A few scrolls had been made from cow skin. At first, this didn't seem like a big deal. But when the scientists compared this result with the desert geography of the area, the whole picture changed. Kumran is a very dry desert region. Water is extremely limited and the land is mostly barren.
In such an environment, raising cows is considered almost impossible. Cows need a large amount of water every day. They also require green grass and wide grazing land. But Kuman had neither enough water nor suitable pasture. That meant producing parchment from cow skin in that area was almost impossible.
There was only one logical conclusion.
If a scroll was written on cow skin, then it could not have been made in Kuman. It must have come from another region where water, grass, and cattle farming were available. In other words, at least some of the scrolls were produced somewhere else and later brought to Kuman. When this report reached Panina Shore, a Dead Sea Scrolls expert at the Israel Antiquities Authority, even she was silent for a few moments. She had spent years caring for these scrolls. But a single DNA report had raised questions about a story that had been accepted for decades. It was now becoming clear that the Essen's theory could not be completely correct.
If some scrolls had come from outside, then how could the entire library belong to just one community? But this was only the beginning. The biggest surprise came when the DNA also started revealing which scrolls were connected to each other, which had come from different regions, and what their real story actually was.
After discovering that many scrolls were made from cow skin, scientists didn't use DNA only to find out which animal the scrolls came from, they took it one step further and tried to discover whether different scrolls were connected to each other. This is where the story became even more interesting. Every animal has its own unique DNA identity which can simply be called a genetic fingerprint. Scientists started comparing the DNA found in different scrolls. If two pieces were made from the skin of the same animal, their DNA showed a lot of similarities. But if they came from different animals, their genetic patterns were different. The biggest help in this investigation came from mitochondrial DNA.
This type of DNA stays almost unchanged for many generations, making it much easier to tell whether two parchments came from the same animal or from different animals. For the first time, scientists had a method that was based not on guesses, but on real scientific evidence. During the research, another interesting discovery came to light.
Some scrolls had DNA from different animals, but those animals belong to the same related herd, meaning the same herd. This suggested that those parchments were most likely prepared in the same area. On the other hand, some other scrolls had completely different DNA, showing that they had come from a different place. Slowly, scientists began identifying different production centers. In other words, they started understanding which scrolls were produced in the same region and which ones were brought from different places and later gathered together in one location. This was something no one had known before. DNA also helped identify several matching fragments that had earlier been connected only by comparing the handwriting. Some old assumptions turned out to be correct, but in many cases, DNA showed that pieces believed to be part of the same scroll had actually come from different places. For the first time, scholars had not just opinions, but physical evidence. The picture was now becoming much clearer.
The Dead Sea Scrolls were not the story of just one place or one community. They were a large collection of documents prepared in different regions and at different times which were later brought together in the same area. But even after all this, the biggest piece of evidence was still waiting to be revealed. In the end, the book of Jeremiah uncovered the truth that finally answered one of the biggest debates that had continued for decades.
What did the book of Jeremiah prove? DNA testing had already made it clear that not all the scrolls came from the same place. But the strongest evidence came from the book of Jeremiah. This was the document that gave a completely new direction to a debate that had been going on for many years. Scientists found that there were two different versions of the book of Jeremiah. One was the long version which was very similar to today's Hebrew Bible. The other was the short version where many sections were shorter and the order of some chapters was also different.
Earlier, scholars believe that one of them had probably been changed later or that a scribe had made a mistake. But DNA told a completely different story.
When the parchments of both versions were tested, scientists found that the long version was written on sheep skin, while the short version was written on cow's skin. This didn't just mean that they were written on the skins of different animals. The real meaning was that they were most likely prepared in different regions. if they were produced in different places. It also suggested that they were preserved and passed down by different communities. In other words, there wasn't just one official version of Jeremiah at that time.
Different communities accepted their own version as the correct one. Earlier, this was only a possibility, but now DNA had given it a strong scientific foundation. The same pattern was seen in other religious texts as well. A religious manuscript called Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice was found at both Kuman and Msada.
DNA testing showed that its multiple copies were written on the skins of different animals. This meant it wasn't a document that belonged to just one small community. It was copied, read, and shared across different places. This was the first time scientists began using DNA to understand text tradition.
They were no longer just reading the words. They were also discovering how a religious text traveled from one place to another, which communities accepted it, and how different traditions developed over time. The picture was now much clearer than before. The Dead Sea Scrolls were not telling the story of just one community. They were giving a glimpse into many religious groups spread across ancient Judea. What exactly were the Dead Sea Scrolls? By now, DNA testing had made one thing clear. The Dead Sea Scrolls were not all written in the same place. But now the biggest question appeared. If all these scrolls did not belong to one community, then what exactly were they? How did so many different documents end up in the same place? Many scholars found the answer in the tradition of Genea. In simple words, a Geneza was a kind of sacred storage. It was a safe place where old religious texts were kept with respect. In Jewish tradition, there was a special rule. According to Jewish law, any religious document that contained God's name could never be torn, burned, or thrown away. No matter how old or damaged it became, it had to be preserved with respect. That is why when a scroll was no longer suitable for everyday use, it was not destroyed.
Instead, it was placed in a sacred storage place. Many historians believe that the caves of Kuman may also have served as one large genea. The situation at that time also supports this theory.
Jerusalem was only about 20 m from Kuman.
In those days, the journey was difficult but not impossible.
Then between 68 to 70 CE when the Roman army invaded Judea and Jerusalem suffered massive destruction. During the Roman invasion, people tried to protect their most valuable religious texts.
Many scholars believe that this was the time when scrolls from different regions were brought into these caves. This could also mean that the caves did not contain the documents of just one community. They held religious texts from different communities. Some scrolls may have been family treasures passed down through generations, which we can call family scrolls. Others may have come from different Jewish places of worship or synagogue scrolls. When the situation became dangerous, people placed them in a safe location to protect them. If this is true, then the Dead Sea Scrolls were not the private library of one small religious group.
They were a large collection of religious traditions, beliefs, and sacred texts from different communities across ancient Judea. That is why they contained different handwriting, different versions and parchments from different regions. DNA research connected all these pieces into one clear picture for the first time. The biggest impact of DNA research was not just discovering where the Dead Sea Scrolls came from. The real change was that historians also had to rethink the way they looked at the Bible and the early Christian period. For many years, it was believed that religious texts already had one fixed form at that time.
But the Dead Sea Scrolls showed that multiple Bible versions existed side by side. The biggest example was the book of Jeremiah where two different versions were found. Now, DNA also proved that these were not simply writing mistakes.
They were actually used in different regions and by different communities.
And this was not limited to Jeremiah alone. Different copies of books like Genesis and Psalms were also found. In some copies, a few words were different.
In others, the order of chapters had changed. Some even had more or fewer sections. This clearly showed that there was no single fixed version of the Bible at that time. This also had another important meaning. The process we now call canonization, which decided which religious books would be considered official, was not yet complete.
Different communities accepted the texts they had and followed them in their religious life. In other words, many things were still taking shape during that period. That is why we also see different interpretations from that time. Different people understood the same religious teachings in different ways. This was the religious diversity of that period. From the outside, everything may have looked similar, but inside many different ideas and traditions were existing side by side.
If we talk about the time of Jesus, this was the same period when Jesus was teaching people. The society where he shared his message already had many religious views and many different religious texts.
A few years later, when the early Christian movement began, the same environment continued.
Different communities moved forward with their own beliefs and traditions. That is why the Dead Sea Scrolls are now considered more important than ever for understanding that period. This DNA research did not say that today's Bible is wrong. Instead, it showed that the process of its development was long and that many communities contributed to it.
That is why historians now see these scrolls not just as old documents, but as a window into the entire religious world of that time. But the story does not end here. DNA research answered some important questions, but at the same time, it also raised new ones that scientists are still trying to solve today.
Where has research reached since 2020?
After the DNA research was published in 2020, the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls entered a completely new phase. Earlier, scientists were mainly trying to understand what was written in a scroll.
But now they are also focusing on where the scroll was made, how it reached this place and which communities were connected to it. The first goal of researchers is to identify different production centers. In other words, they are trying to find out which scrolls were produced in the same region and which came from different areas. Because of DNA, this work has now become much easier than before. At the same time, a lot of work is also being done on geographic mapping. Scientists hope that in the future, just by studying a small piece of parchment, they will be able to tell which part of the ancient world the animal lived in before its skin was used. For this, a large ancient animal DNA database is being created using animals from different regions. The bigger this database becomes, the more accurate the results will be. It is not just DNA anymore. Modern technologies like multisspectral imaging are also being used. With this technology, scientists are reading words on the scrolls that cannot be seen with the naked eye. In many places, faded writing is now becoming readable again. These findings are then combined with DNA results to understand the complete picture. But along with the answers, many new future questions have also appeared. Were there several major religious writing centers across ancient Judea? How closely were different communities connected? Did they share copies of their religious texts with each other? And how did these scrolls travel from one place to another?
Scientists are now trying to understand the entire network of communities. They want to learn what kind of connections existed between different religious groups and how their texts traveled. In other words, they are no longer just reading the scrolls. They are also studying the movement of scrolls and creating their complete physical mapping. So, the story of the Dead Sea Scrolls is far from over. In fact, the real research has only just begun. With every new technology, another layer of history is uncovered. And with every new answer, another question appears. If this whole story had to be explained in one line, it would probably be this. For nearly 70 years, the world was asking the wrong question. Everyone wanted to know what was written inside the Dead Sea Scrolls, but very few people asked what they were actually made from. That one question changed the direction of the entire research. DNA testing showed that reading only the ink was not enough.
The animal skin on which these scrolls were written also had its own story.

Now scientists are reading the DNA as well. When both pieces of information are studied together, a picture appears that had never been seen before. They are also trying to understand where they were made, which routes they traveled, and which communities preserve them. That is why this research is still not finished. New DNA techniques, multisspectral imaging, and other modern research methods may reveal even more secrets in the future.
