[00:00:07]Carved in Constantinople around 400 CE and now held in Berlin's Bode Museum, this marble relief is one of the oldest surviving examples of the Hetoimasia, Greek for the preparation of the throne.

[00:00:22]The iconographer renders absence as doctrine. The type draws its name from the Greek verb hetoimazo, to prepare.

[00:00:55]The Hetoimasia holds the space between those two clauses. It is not a last judgement scene. It is not Christ enthroned in glory. It is the moment before. The iconographic tense between the ascension already accomplished and the visible return still future.
